Demo-Graphics: Comic Fandom on Facebook – US Edition
Each month I run demographic data of comic “fans” based on data mined from Facebook.
This data is compiled using key terms, “likes,” users have as part of their profiles. Primarily terms are focused on generic ones such as “comics” or “graphic novels” or publishers. I stay away from specific characters, creators or series because this does not indicate they are a comic book fan. Over 100 terms are used for this report.
This data is important in that it shows who the potential comic audience could be. This is not purchasers, these are people who have shown an affinity for comics and are potential purchasers and those with an interest.
Also, with this being online/technology, due to laws and restrictions, those under the age of 13 are likely underrepresented.
Facebook Population: Over 32,000,000 in the United States
That number holds steady from the previous month. Worldwide, the estimate is 238,054,783 which is a decrease of about 1.5 million compared to last month.
The Spanish-speaking population last month was 15.94%, and this month the population has decreased to 15.00%.
Gender and Age
Last month men accounted for 50% and women were 50%. Again that’s the case with no changes. When looking at the data for ages men account for 16.7 million and women are 15.7 million. When it comes to relationship status men are 16.2 million and women are 15.5 million. So, it’s probably closer to 51/49 split between men and women.
Women continue to be the majority under the age of 18, but things remain close in the 18-21 demographic as well.
With a steady population this remains so as well. Those that are “Single” dropped 100,000, and “Unspecified” dropped 200,000. “Open Relationship” saw an increase of 1,000.
Things remain pretty steady here as well with little change from last month.
And things are almost exactly the same as last month when it comes to percentages for those interested in the same gender.
African Americans increased by 100,000 compared to last month and Asian Americans increased by 10,000.
Generation X increased by 100,000 while the others remained the same.
And come back next month for a new look at the data! And on February 15th we’ll have the next report of Europe’s data!
