Demo-Graphics: Comic Fandom on Facebook – US Edition
Each month I run demographic data of comic “fans” based on data mined from Facebook.
This data is compiled using key terms, “likes,” users have as part of their profiles. Primarily terms are focused on generic ones such as “comics” or “graphic novels” or publishers. I stay away from specific characters, creators or series because this does not indicate they are a comic book fan. Over 100 terms are used for this report.
This data is important in that it shows who the potential comic audience could be. This is not purchasers, these are people who have shown an affinity for comics and are potential purchasers and those with an interest.
Also, with this being online/technology, due to laws and restrictions, those under the age of 13 are likely underrepresented.
Facebook Population: Over 30,000,000 in the United States
That drops from the previous month’s 37 million. Worldwide, the estimate is 240,808,941 which is a decrease of about 42,000,000 compared to last month.
The Spanish-speaking population last month was 16.22%, and this month the population has increased to 18.33%.
Gender and Age
Last month men accounted for 51.35% and women were 48.65%. Things have shifted a lot with men now accounting for 66.67% and women have dropped to 33.33%. Men have gained about 1 million individuals from the previous month while women decreased by 8 million.
Things have shifted a lot as women are no longer a majority under the age of 18 and things have shifted where they don’t become a majority until the 50 to 53 demographic. There’s of course a greater gap between men and women.
Men saw a bit of an increase in those that are “single” but generally things dropped across the board, especially for women since their overall population dropped.
And as is expected with women decreasing we see that here too.
When it comes to percents, things don’t shift that much. Most of the women decreased in the “unspecified” with women interested in men also seeing a sizeable decrease.
Here too women see a decrease whole men have increased across the board in varying amounts.
Finally, everything saw a drop as the decrease in women was across the board. Especially hit was Millennials who saw a decrease of 4.9 million individuals.
And come back next month for a new look at the data! And on February 15th we’ll have the next report of Europe’s data!
