Facebook Fandom Spotlight: Star Wars Fans!
It’s Monday and that means the latest Facebook Fandom Spotlight, where we look at the demographic breakdown of some group on Facebook. Today, we’re looking at Star Wars fans. With the news that Dark Horse’s license is ending in 2014 and Marvel will pick up the comics, plus the announcement the script is finished for the next film, it felt like a perfect time to do this.
For these reports, I manipulate the Facebook platform by looking at the various “like” terms to determine these statistics. For this report over 100 terms including movies, games, comics, and characters were used.
Facebook Population: Over 15,600,000 users in the US
I struggled to get the total to that amount. This report might be the most terms ever used and most added little to the total. This fandom is smaller than the overall comic population, which is interesting. Spanish speakers account for now 1,820,000 fans, 11.67%. That’s a couple percentage points lower than the comic book fandom.
Gender and Age
In comic fandom, men accounted for 53.64% and women 42.73%. Star Wars fans breaks more male, who account for 61.54% of the population, while women account for 38.46%. Disney stated they purchased this property to shore up their “boy” demographic and this shows they know what they’re talking about as far as that.
