Demo-Graphics: The State of DC Entertainment

With San Diego Comic-Con about to begin we’re looking at the demographic data for various publishers and comics. We’ve already posted Facebook‘s general stats, and tomorrow will be Marvel, followed by Indie comics, and the industry as a whole. Up now is DC Entertainment.

This statistic breakdown, we’ve looked at terms like DC Comics and Vertigo Comics, but not specific comic series or characters. It’s a focus on DC Entertainment and its publishing imprints. Think of it as looking at the DC brand.

Facebook DC Comics Fan Population: Over 11,000,000 US

DC Comic’s stats have shifted in interesting ways since 2015. Last year the population stood at 12 million individuals, so the overall population has shifted some. In 2014 it was 7.6 million, so it’s still up compared to two years ago.

In 2014 Spanish speakers accounted for 14.55%, 2015 it was 14.17%, and in 2015 it’s now 18.18% with 2 million individuals.

Gender and Age

In 2014, men accounted for 68.18% and women were 28.64% of the DC population. In 2015 men accounted for 73.33% and women were 27.50%. In 2016 we see a hell of a change with 56.36% of the population being male and 40% female.

The general comic population is men accounting for 54.76% and women account for 45.24%, so DC isn’t that far off from that.

And here’s the stats in a handy pie-chart.

DC Facebook gender 7.18.16And here’s how gender shapes up by percent over age. Compared to last year this graph has changed a lot. Women never become a majority last year but this year we see women overtaking men and becoming a majority at the 50-53 age range. This is a bit older than the general comics population which is at 42-45.

Last year men spiked at 26-29 and this year men spike at 30-33, a bit older. There has been a shift.

dc facebook gender age 7.18.16Compared to last year there’s been a drop in raw population for those under the age of 38. Those under 17 dropped a lot, close to 800,000 individuals. While women saw a big leap in the overall population, those under the age of 17 gained just 0.15 percentage points.

dc facebook gender age raw 7.18.16Relationship Status

While a lot of the relationship status is similar to last year, those that are “Single” saw the largest drop while those “In Relationships” and “Married” saw gains when it comes to their percentage.

dc facebook relationship status 7.18.16Education

With a smaller population than last year the raw numbers have dropped, but the percentages generally remain the same. There is a drop with younger individuals which can be expected due to that loss of them as mentioned above.

dc facebook education 7.18.16Gender Interest

There’s been some very interesting shifts when it comes to percentages comparing this year and last year. Men interested in Men, Women interested in Women, and Women interested in both Men and Women are all up. Men interested in Men and Women is just down slightly.

dc facebook gender interest 7.18.16Ethnicity

Here things are a bit better too compared to last year, but not by a whole lot. African Americans remain the same in overall population, but African American women went up about 17 percentage points. Asian Americans increased by 50,000 since last year with women almost doubling. Hispanics increased by 100,000 since last year with those saying their bilingual seeing the largest increase. In fact, those who identify as bilingual and those who are English dominant flipped in the overall population size.

dc facebook ethnicity 7.18.16Generation

Baby Boomers and Generation X both increased in overall population while Millennials saw a drop since last year.

dc facebook generation 7.18.16Come back tomorrow when we’ll look at stats for Marvel!

Demo-Graphics: Facebook US Users

With San Diego Comic-Con kicking off this week, I’ll be looking at a whole bunch of data crunched from mining Facebook. To kick this off, I thought it’d be good to look at how Facebook itself might have changed. It’s been over a year since I last looked at the data, and much has changed, including some of the process itself and what is returned as far as data.

We’ll also be using this data to see how things might impact the comic fan population, and how comic fans compare to the general Facebook population.

Unlike my other reports, this one focuses just on people who are on Facebook and located in the United States. No terms are used at all as far as likes, interests, etc.

Facebook Population: Over 198,000,000 in the United States

Since January of 2015, the population of Facebook users has increased by 7 million individuals. It’s been about 18 million since 2014. Of that, Spanish speakers now account for 13.64% with 27 million of them. In 2015 that population was 19 million or 9.95%.

Gender and Age

In 2014, men accounted for 45.56% and women were 53.33%. In 2015 it was 53.40% women and 46.07% men. In 2016 women account for 54.04% while men account for 45.45%.

In the United States as a whole, women account for 51%, while men are about 49%, that was as of the 2010 Census. So, Facebook skewers slightly more female.

Facebook Gender 7.15.16We’ll next look at how the percentage of women and men break down through age. Unlike comic fans, there’s never a point where men are a clear majority. At most there’s parity from ages 22 to 29. That parity also existed last year.

facebook gender age 7.15.16And here is all of the data presented in its raw form. Compared to 2015, what we see is interesting. Under 17 has shrunk again as far as population, and so has those 56 and up.

facebook gender age raw 7.15.16Relationship Status

Compared to last year Unspecified received the greatest gain, with all of the other stats shifting a little higher or lower.

facebook relationship 7.15.16Education

While the population grew this year, these stats have remained pretty steady compared to last year.

facebook education 7.15.16Gender Interest

Things here has remained relatively steady as well. Unspecified saw gains as far as percentage which caused others to dip a bit. The most was Men interested in Women and Women interested in Men which both decreased about 1 percentage point.

facebook gender interest 7.15.16Ethnicity

The African American population remained steady, while Asian Americans and Hispanics both saw large gains. Hispanics grew by 6 million compared to last year.

facebook ethnicity 7.15.16Generation

Baby Boomers dipped a bit as both Generation X and Millennials both grew.

facebook generation 7.15.16Now that we know where Facebook as a whole stands, we can explore more specifics! Join us tomorrow when we start to dive into specific stats, up first DC Entertainment!

It’s the first of the month, and first of the year, and that means a new look at the demographics of people who “like” comics on Facebook. This data is compiled using demographic data from Facebook, and is limited to the United States.

This data is compiled using key terms, “likes,” users have as part of their profiles. Primarily terms are focused on generic ones such as “comics” or “graphic novels” or publishers. I stay away from specific characters, creators or series, because this does not indicate they are a comic book fan. Over 100 terms are used for this report.

This data is important in that it shows who the potential comic audience could be. This is not purchasers, these are people who have shown an affinity for comics and are potential purchasers and those with an interest.

Facebook Population: Over 42,000,000 in the United States

Has remained steady this month. After a bit of fluctuation over the last few months, it’s now settled at a consistent amount. Worldwide, the estimate is 280,326,308.

The Spanish-speaking population last month was 15.17%, and this month the population has increased up to 20.48%.

Gender and Age

The population has remained steady and the gender split has also remained steady. Men account for 54.76% and women account for 45.24%.facebook comics gender 6.1.16We’ll next look at how the percentage of women and men break down through age.

facebook comics gender age 7.1.16While the population has remained steady there has been some shifts in the raw data below. The population has gone back up from last month rebounding back to 42 million. That’s a 3 million increase from last month. Currently, this is the most the population has gotten and regularly fluctuates between 39 million and 42 million.

The Spanish-speaking population last month was 17.18%, and this month the population has decreased back down to 15.17%. This is a combination of the increased population size and the general population decreasing to 6.6 million.

Gender and Age

Last month women accounted for 43.59% and men were 56.41%. This month both men and women increased in population with women increasing by 2 million and men just 1 million. The rebound was short lived as the population dips to the previous month’s total of 39 million. This seems to be a common amount of folks so it’s a common population size.

The Spanish-speaking population last month was 15.61%, and this month the population increased in raw size and percent. It now stands at 17.18%.

Demo-Graphics: The Walking Dead vs. Fear the Walking Dead

Over the past two weeks I’ve been exploring the demographics of those who “like” The Walking Dead and Fear the Walking Dead on Facebook. While there’s much that’s similar between the two, they each have their own fandom. For these types of reports, I look at those who like terms associated with each show.

The Walking Dead has over 24 million fans in the United States, and Fear the Walking Dead‘s 1.4 million fans is a subset. In other words, those who like Fear the Walking Dead also like The Walking Dead.

Lets dive in to see where they are similar and where they differ.

Gender and Age

When it comes to gender, both shows enjoy a majority made up of women when it comes to their gender split with The Walking Dead having a bit of an edge in that department. The Walking Dead has 54.17% female fans while Fear the Walking Dead is 52.86%.

The Walking Dead Gender

wd gender 4.4.16Fear the Walking Dead Gender

fear the walking dead gender 4.11.16What’s also interesting between the two is that each show has women as the majority of fans age 17 and under, then men take over as the majority from age 18 to age 33, then it’s women again.

Relationship Status

Here we start to see some bigger differences between the two. Fear the Walking Dead fans have a higher percentage that are “married,” “in relationship,” “domestic partnership,” and “engaged.” With the show being geared around families, more so than Walking Dead, you have to wonder if that plays into it at all?

Fear the Walking Dead Relationship Stats

fear the walking dead relationship status 4.11.16Gender Interest

This one I find a bit interesting. Fear the Walking Dead has a higher percentage of folks interested in the same sex, though there’s a smaller interest of people interested in both sexes.

Fear the Walking Dead Gender Interest

fear the walking dead gender interest 4.11.16The Walking Dead Gender Interest

wd gender interest 4.4.16Ethnicity

This one I’m a bit surprised about. Fear the Walking Dead has a higher percentage of African American fans, but fewer Hispanic fans (not something I’d have expected). The one exception is there is a higher percentage of Hispanics who are English-dominant for Fear the Walking Dead fans.

The Walking Dead Ethnicity

wd ethnicity 4.4.16Fear the Walking Dead Ethnicity

fear the walking dead ethnicity 4.11.16While the differences are huge, there are some subtle ones. It’ll be interesting to see as Fear the Walking Dead‘s fandom grows to see if the differences between the demographics of the two shows expands too.

Demo-Graphics: Fear The Walking Dead

Last week we looked at the demographics for The Walking Dead‘ finding that the popular show has about 24 million likes in the United States on Facebook and women account for 54.17% of those likes. This week we’re looking at Fear the Walking Dead, the sister show whose second season debuted this past Sunday.

For this report, we’re looking at fans within the United States that enjoy Fear The Walking Dead just on television, due to the lack of other terms.

Facebook Population: Over 1.4 million fans in the US

Spanish speakers account for 170,000 fans, 12.14%.

Gender and Age

Much like The Walking Dead, women are the majority of the likes for Fear the Walking Dead. Women account for 52.86% with 740,000 individuals and men are 49.29% with 690,000 individuals. The total is over 100% due to how Facebook rounds the data.

fear the walking dead gender 4.11.16Below is women and men as they age. We see the usual split as they grow older, but where that happens is a bit different than The Walking Dead. Women are still the majority of those under the age of 17.

fear the walking dead gender age 4.11.16Below is the raw data for Fear the Walking Dead fans.

fear the walking dead gender age raw 4.11.16Relationship Status

Some of the populations are just too small to get an accurate number. For those the spaces are blank. Compared to The Walking Dead more individuals are “in a relationship” and “married.”

fear the walking dead relationship status 4.11.16Education

Women are a majority in many of the education break downs which is rather interesting.

fear the walking dead education 4.11.16Gender Interest

Generally men interesting in men and women interested in women are higher than fans of The Walking Dead with the former having a much larger jump.

fear the walking dead gender interest 4.11.16Ethnicity

Though the show has a pretty diverse cast these stats are not what I expected compared to The Walking Dead. African Americans are a higher percentage, but all of the rest are lower with some variation in the Hispanic demographic.

fear the walking dead ethnicity 4.11.16Generation

This data is what I’d expect with the show being more popular with those in the Generation X demographic. Millennials is about the same.

fear the walking dead generation 4.11.16And that wraps up the latest look at the demographics of those who like Fear the Walking Dead. Next week we’ll compare the show with The Walking Dead!

Demo-Graphics: The Walking Dead

Its been about a  year since we last looked at The Walking Dead‘s demographics via Facebook’s data. With the sixth season wrapped up, it felt like an appropriate time to see how things have changed for the record setting show, and best selling comic book series.

For this report, we’re looking at fans within the United States that enjoy The Walking Dead in comics, television, books, games, or even the characters. We’ll also compare the latest results to those of last report.

Facebook Population: Over 24 million fans in the US

That’s an increase of about 2 million fans since last year. Spanish speakers account for 4 million fans, 16.67%. That’s an increase of 1 million Spanish speakers.

Gender and Age

A year ago, men and women were generally evenly split with women accounting for 51.82% and men for 50.91% (yes it’s more than 100%, but the system most likely rounds up for large numbers). A year later and women have surged with the 2 million increase almost entirely in that demographic. Women account for 13 million likes while men account for 11 million. That’s 54.17% women and 45.83% men.
wd gender 4.4.16Below is the trend line which looks at the age and gender of the individuals together. I think what’s interesting is this data is comparable to last year where women are a majority under the age of 17, then men are a majority for a bit, then women become the majority much earlier than comic book likes of the general Facebook population.

wd gender age 4.4.16Below is the raw data for The Walking Dead fans.

wd raw data 4.4. 16Relationship Status

Compared to last year, the relationship status is almost the same. The only major shit is more individuals are “unspecified” and that mostly comes from “in a relationship” and “engaged.”

wd relationship status 4.4.16Education

Like relationships, education has remained relatively the same as last year.
wd education 4.4.16Gender Interest

With more women the amount of women interesting in men has seen the most shift, but what’s also interesting is while there’s fewer men interested in men and women interested in women, there are more men and women interested in men and women.
wd gender interest 4.4.16Ethnicity

The last report was the first to track ethnicity and since then African Americans and Asian Americans have both increased slightly while Hispanics, particularly bilingual and Spanish dominant, have increased greatly.

And finally, compared to last year’s report, Baby Boomers and Generation X have both decreased in population size while Millennials make up almost 2/3 the population increasing in both raw numbers and as a percent.

Facebook Population: Over 41,000,000 in the United States

The rebound rebound continues as the overall population again grows for a second month in a row. Last month the population was 39 million and this month sees a return to numbers equal to what was being returned towards the end of last year. I’d guess with movie season beginning as well as Netflix shows returned, the buzz and interest has increased and this is of a cyclical nature.

The Spanish-speaking population last month was 17.18%, and this month the population continued to decrease, this time dropping to 15.61%.

Where do Publishers Stand when it Comes to Female Fans?

It’s been quite a while since I last looked at how publishers stand when it comes to women who have indicated they like them on Facebook. We have to go back to December 2013 to see the last results, and with the kick-off of Comics Herstory, I felt it was appropriate to revisit these stats a little over 2 years later.

While some publishers continue to have women as the majority of their “fans,” others have shifted greatly.

Icon Comics, Kodansha, Tokyopop, and Yen Press all had women as the majority of their fans and continue to do so. Dark Horse Comics and Dynamite Entertainment both are new to having majorities. Archie had a majority, but now the demographics are almost evenly split.

The big two saw dips across the board compared to 2013.

As a whole though when it comes to percentage, “Alternative Comics,” Webcomic, and Comics all saw gains when it comes to women.

Here’s the breakdown of below:

  • Total – this is the amount of people listed by Facebook for that term
  • US Total – the above amount, but in the United States (% is that of the US/Total)
  • Men – The amount of individuals who mark themselves as men in the US (% is that of Men/US)
  • Women – The amount of individuals who mark themselves as women in the US (% is that of Women/US)

I have also color coded the results:

  • Green – Publishers where women are a majority of their Facebook fans in the United States
  • Yellow – Publishers where women are not the majority, but are greater than our result from our latest Facebook Fandom study of all of comic book fans.
