TV Review: The Walking Dead S.4 Ep.16 – A

Warning Spoilers Ahead

the walking dead season 4In the season finale of The Walking Dead Rick and the others begin to reunite at Terminus, soon realizing that the marauders are closing in, and that the so-called sanctuary is not exactly what it seems to be.

The episode opens up in the past, with everyone back at the prison, it’s simpler times, a time of happiness. Quickly flash to Rick, alone, covered in blood, sitting on a road by himself, and shaking. We know to expect a tense episode, and we’re not even at the credits yet.

Post credits, we see Rick, Carl and Michonne, still in the woods and surviving, making their way to Terminus. After a quiet moment of teaching, the three are interrupted by the screams of an individual surrounded by walkers. Their quiet moment has gone bad as the three are now on the run, having to change their plans and now figure out where to go to survive the walkers. It leads them to a car, and things are calm again. But that’s not for long… Rick and crew are surrounded by the crew Daryl has joined. And the crew has issues with Rick, they know he killed a member of their crew. But, I don’t remember them ever seeing Rick and I have no idea how they know who did it. But, that’s a plot hole I guess I’ll need to go back and figure out myself.

Out of all of the moments this season, this battle, between Rick and the “bikers” is the scariest of them all. I had no idea how they’d all get out of it and what’s needed to be done to survive, what is done, is brutal, visceral, and frightening. This is Rick unchained, all his pent-up anger is loosened.

But, throughout the episode, we’re shown flashbacks. The flashbacks are mostly between Rick and Herschel. We’ve never seen how Rick became a farmer, a shepherd, and here’s that back story. The episode is clearly about Rick’s finding peace, then losing it due to man, not the walkers. It’s also about what world Rick is giving Carl. As Hershel says, Rick’s war is over, but from the fight we just saw, it’s clearly not. Rick won’t know peace in this world. But, they’re back with Daryl! So… yay?

Rick and Daryl discuss Daryl’s journey and what happened and it’s clear these four are family now. Rick explains his anger that unleashes is a reason they’re alive. We’ve just seen it, and saw it with Rick and Tyreese. Rick is a killer for survival, not because it’s part of some rule set, and he’ll do what he needs to so he and Carl survives. What’s also interesting is Michonne with Carl. It’s clear there’s a motherly/sisterly thing going on with Michonne watching over Carl. It’s a great relationship and is another example of the growth of these characters over this season and the series. It all leads to Michonne opening up to Carl about how she lost her child and boyfriend, an emotional moment for her as she explains her “pet” zombies and how she deserved to drag them around as a reminder. To her it made her a monster and gone. She’s found now, with a new family. But, the dynamic between the three, Rick, Michonne, and Carl is a weird one, but shows how things have changed in personal relationships, along with the new threats.

But, the four have gotten to Terminus and are smart by sneaking in. There they meet the members of this crew and are welcomed. Something isn’t right. Much like Rick and crew, we’re suspicious as viewers, wondering what the spin of it all is. Should we trust them? That answer is quickly provided.

Things quickly dissolve, and Rick and crew are under fire again, up against unknown forces who want something…. we don’t know what, we don’t know why. It’s tense, very tense, and I felt my stomach tighten as the action progressed. I expected the worst. But, through it all, there’s some good moments, as Rick and his team is reunited with Glenn and his. It’s a joining of forces we’ve been waiting for.

After all of that, we’re back in the past. Happier moments. Rick, Carl, Herschel, joined by Beth working on the farm. Cut though to the present, and Rick is about to lead another revolution, and take on Terminus. A hell of an ending as it looks like season five is starting off with war.

Next season can’t come soon enough…. I left the episode shaking, jaw dropped, and counting down the days.

TV Review: The Walking Dead S.4 Ep.15 – Us

Warning Spoilers Ahead

the walking dead season 4The Walking Dead opens up with Glenn, Abraham and the rest chatting as they make their way towards somewhere. It’s a bunch of small moments that allow us to get to know each of them a bit more. There’s questions as to what’s Tara’s thoughts and feelings towards Glenn too (though it’s clear it’s not that type of “like”). They then come across a sign we’ve seen before, the one Maggie wrote, for Glenn to head to Terminus. It’s a moment of joy in a bleak world.

The episode quickly shifts to Daryl and the new group he’s with. But also a quick flip to Michonne, Rick and Carl and their journey. There’s issues over with Daryl and his new “friends” particularly a person named Len. But, there’s rules to this group, that at least they seem to stick by. It’s tough to tell, are they bad, or neutral in it all?

Back to Glenn and his group. They’re gaining on Maggie, but that leads them to dark tunnel full of who knows what. Abraham has a mission though, to get Eugene to DC, and that causes them to have to part ways. Abraham leaves Glenn and Tara with supplies, showing off how good his group is. Glenn and Tara for some reason head into the tunnel, filling them and us with tension as they make their way through the darkness. You can hear the walkers, but with so little light, we, and Glenn don’t know exactly how many. Of course Glenn’s plan to get past the walkers can’t go perfectly. There’s a great moment though after some solid tension. I found myself yelling “get some” as bullets flew.

From that happy moment, we then flip back to Daryl who is getting used to, and figuring out this new group. They’re brutal, but they have rules, and seem to protect each other.

Back to Glenn and his expanded group, they reach Terminus, our first eyes on what exactly it is. It’s the moment we’ve been waiting for, Terminus has arrived.

TV Review: The Walking Dead S.4 Ep.14 – The Grove

Warning Spoilers Ahead

the walking dead season 4The Walking Dead opens up with Carol and Lizzie talking. Lizzie admits she shot people, and Carol talks about her personal life a little. It’s some revelations I don’t think we’ve gotten before, and shows we have much to learn about everyone. Tyreese though is having issues, fighting a fever and trouble sleeping through the night. This leads to a discussion between Carol and Tyreese about how the two children are dealing with this new world, each in their own way and each in a disturbing way. It’s a weird family dynamic, and that’s what this is in a way. Mika and Carol head out to find water, leading to an interesting discussion about how Mika sees the world.

They come across a house leading to some moments that add a lot to each others character. Lizzie for some reason don’t see the Walkers for what they are, while Mika has trouble dealing with the violence around her. The two are clearly emotionally disturbed and as the series continues, it’ll be fascinating to see how this all handled… that is if they survive. But, a house should give them some peace right? Instead it shows the psychological issues that have built up and hit everyone.

There’s a moment where you wonder if Lizzie’s world view might have come to reality as the group is endangered. The actions of each person is interesting and it’s actions that say it all. I honestly will say though, Lizzie after this event and what she says disturbed me as much as before. Mika’s innocence compared to Lizzie’s view is almost fresh and welcome….

Then comes the shoe dropping. We knew something was coming and it’s close to the worse case scenario. I thought this is where this plot thread was going, but didn’t expect it to quite go there. And there’s a huge question looming over everyone. How do you deal with this situation? We also have the situation that Tyreese doesn’t know what Carol did at the prison. Both are torn up as to what happened, and the choices are hard. Carol overall is dealing with it as loss as a mother.

The end of the episode is heartbreaking and devastating with actions and confessions that are jaw dropping. The final moments between Tyreese and Carol are amazing, showing off the acting ability of these individuals, something that’s not given enough credit.

The episode shows off why the show has it’s lovers and haters, frustrating some and enthralling others. Closing moments of the devastated house, a quite moment of a deer grazing, this is a show that mixes solid characters, writing, and directing.

This episode is a gut punch and reminds us of the difficult decisions that need to be made in a world where all rules are gone and survival is the only priority.

TV Review: The Walking Dead S.4 Ep.13 – Alone

Warning Spoilers Ahead

the walking dead season 4The Walking Dead opens up with a flashback and answers the question we’ve been wondering, how Bob Stookey met up our group of survivors. Through a pretty bleak opening we see him before he met anyone and get a glimpse of some fo what he did to survive. From there, we flash to Bob, Sasha, and Maggie struggling against walkers in a dense fog. Later they come across the sign for sanctuary and debate whether to follow it or not.

Meanwhile Daryl and Beth are getting along nicely, where Daryl is teaching Beth some survival techniques like tracking and how to use the crossbow. Unfortunately an accident ends the training and forces them to change their plans a bit. They instead head to a house which is kept up quite well, as if someone was recently there. They have to decide what to do, since someone is likely there, do they want to take it all or leave it for the unknown resident. they decide to relax with Beth playing the piano while Daryl falls asleep.

Back to the trio, Maggie bolts, leaving Bob and Sasha alone. Maggie comes across a walker and uses the blood to leave a message. Bob and Sasha follow her and discuss their situation.

Meanwhile at the house, Beth and Daryl’s peace is interrupted as they’re assaulted by a pack of walkers. During their escape, Beth is grabbed by an unknown individual in a car. It’s a pretty shocking moment, and very unexpected.

Back to Sasha and Bob, they’re still following Maggie and get to a point where Sasha wants to stop, but Bob doesn’t want to stay. Instead a moment we all expected to come happens, leading to a heartbreaking scene. What happens next is a bit predictable, But still solid.

There, some unpredictable things happen with Daryl, creating a plot thread that’s unexpected and I have no idea where it’s going.

The episode continues the multiple story lines and chops them up pretty well. There’s a lot in this more muted, quieter episode, some action, some character movement. But, overall, it’s a bridge episode, adding to the plot of the greater season instead of standing on its own.

TV Review: The Walking Dead S.4 Ep.12 – Still

Warning Spoilers Ahead

the walking dead season 4The Walking Dead kicks off with a tense scene of Beth and Daryl struggling to escape a heard of walkers, and hiding in the trunk of a car with the threat of being caught in their and our minds. The darkness, the lid shaking as the walkers move by, it’s a fantastic opening that throws you right into the threat.

From there, they explore their new surroundings, and through each move, we learn more about their characters and the interesting dynamic the two create. Their philosophy on life and it’s meaning in this new world is highly different, where one still has some faith and the other is set on the situation at hand.

Beth is clearly at a point where she doesn’t know what her role is in this new world. She’s stuck between her previous “good girl” life and knowing that the world is coming to an end, so she might as well experience some things she never has, like alcohol. That all leads to a game of “never have I ever.” That, plus alcohol, all leads to a pissed Daryl who after a question from Beth flips out. It all leads to a hell of a confrontation where their two worlds collide. Again, it’s a segment that shows off the characters and the actor power of the two individuals. It’s all a reminder this isn’t a horror series, it’s a story of the survivors trying to deal with what they’ve experienced and gone through.

It all wraps up with a very touching conversation between the two where we learn more about Daryl’s history and Beth gives him some very good advice ending with a cleansing fire both literally and metaphorically.

An interesting episode, that’s slow but full of tension. Another episode about the characters we’ve come to know, and even with so many seasons so far, we still learn more about them.
