V for Vendetta and DC Crime featuring Jimmy Olsen series in the works for HBO

DC logo

There’s two stories out there concerning television series based on DC properties.

A television series based on V for Vendetta is in the works for HBO. Pete Jackson is attached to write the adaption with James Gunn and Peter Safran of DC Studios set to executive produce it. Also executive producing is Ben Stephenson via Poison Pen and Leanne Klein of Wall to Wall Media, which is part of Warner Bros. Television Studios UK. Warner Bros. Television will produce.

V for Vendetta was written by Alan Moore with art by David Lloyd and originally released in 1982 in the British anthology Warrior before being published by DC in 1988.

The story is set in a Britain dystopia where a fascist government has taken over. An anarchist known as V who wears a Guy Fawkes mask attempts to topple the government.

The series was made into a film which was released in 2005 starring Hugo Weaving and Natalie Portman. There’s been previous attempts to adapt the comic to television and the television series Pennyworth was to be a prequel to V for Vendetta but that was never fleshed out before the series was canceled according to showrunners Danny Cannon and Bruno Heller with the series going into the British Civil War that would give rise to the fascist government.

While it might seem like an odd choice for a television series, Watchmen which was also created by Moore with Dave Gibbons got a television series that was praised upon its release.

There’s also news that DC Studios is working on another series, DC Crime, that would be a “true crime docuseries” hosted by Jimmy Olsen played by Skyler Gisondo. The first season would focus on Gorilla Grodd, mostly known as a villain of The Flash.

Tony Yacenda and Dan Perrault would serve as writers, executive producers, and showrunners on the series. James Gunn and Peter Safran of DC Studios would also executive produce, with DC Studios’ Galen Vaisman overseeing production.

V for Vendetta is a classic but its DC Compact Comics edition has some issues

Taking place in a totalitarian England following a devastating war that changed the face of the planet, V FOR VENDETTA was the inspiration for the hit 2005 movie starring Natalie Portman and Hugo Weaving.

This amazing graphic novel spotlights a mysterious man in a white porcelain mask and his young protégé as they fight political oppressors through terrorism and seemingly absurd acts. It’s a gripping tale of the blurred lines between ideological good and evil and details a world where political and personal freedoms are non-existent.

V for Vendetta Pulled in China

V for Vendetta

Eight years ago, V for Vendetta aired uncensored in China shocking individuals and raising hopes that state censorship might be eased. The film never aired in theaters. Now, the film has been pulled from the country.

The Taiwan News is reporting that the film has been removed from Chinese video platforms due to “anti-government themes.” Chatter on Chinese social media has risen about the fact the film has been pulled but many of the comments have themselves been deleted.

In 2012, V for Vendetta aired on Channel 6 of China Central Television, a channel considered a “Chinese Communist Party mouthpiece.”

The film’s iconic Guy Fawkes mask has become a symbol of defiance in protests worldwide and was used in recent protests that took place in Hong Kong.

V for Vendetta follows the mysterious V as he takes on a fascist totalitarian government that has cracked down on numerous freedoms and manipulate media to keep their absolute rule.

V for Vendetta: A mask becomes un-Moore’d in time

V for Vendetta is marching in streets from Catalonia to Hong Kong; a centuries old symbol reinvented in the 1982 graphic novel by Alan Moore and David Lloyd, and further popularized by the Wachowski Sisters movie of 2005. Even Occupy was almost 10 years ago?!  Why has this mask and story lived on in protests? How is V for Vendetta a unique dystopian text?

I’m joined by Ajay Singh Chaudhary PHD, executive director of the Brooklyn Institute for Social Research and Ange Tran, artist and designer working on projects for radical social change.

We discuss how the mask has been an effective tool and why the movie and comics still work for us.

Discussed:

  • Histories of the Guy Fawkes mask
  • “The movie was about Bush the comic is about Thatcher” – https://twitter.com/Elana_Brooklyn
  • If V is passe then what’s next for protest garb?
  • “The mask has a story that people understand.” – Ange
  • Mask as floating signifier “Things become Un-Moore’d from their initial foundations “- Ajay
  • More Frankfurt School social theory than usual, even for this very nerdy podcast.

Facebook Fandom Spotlight: Comic Based Movies

It’s Monday and that means a brand new Facebook Fandom spotlight where I look at the statistic of Facebook users when it comes to some part of geek fandom. With so much buzz recently about comic book movies and casting, I thought it might be interesting to look at various comic-based movies and how they did individually and as a series when it comes to gender.

The first thing that stands out to me is that both Catwoman and Elektra have women as the majority of their “likes.” Men in Black as a franchise does well, but though it shows women as a majority, they are most likely just under 50% due to Facebook’s returning fuzzy results with large numbers such as this.

But, what also stands out is Superman Returns being split exactly 50/50 when it comes to men and women. Director Bryan Singer has spoken about how he wanted a movie that would appeal to women as well as men, and it looks like he achieved that according to these numbers.

Many movies on this list came out well before Facebook existed, but overall the results are interesting to me.

Constantine which will soon be a television series does shockingly well when it comes to gender, with 45% women, and the recently rumored Fantastic Four casting had me interested in those results, which was some of the worst when it came to women with 16.67% for the franchise.
