For Juan Cortez, guerrilla warfare is a profession. Death, a hobby. Over the years, he’s traveled from countries at war to conflict zones, putting his experience and training at the service of the highest bidder. This time, fate led him to Santa Costa, a South American country that curiously reminds him of Yara, his native land. Because here, as on the island of Antón Castillo, the recent discovery of a rare resource, a mineral called “Tantalum,” has upset the economy of a small nation previously ignored.

Three camps now face each other: the military junta recently established in power by Di Stefano, the bourgeois party led by the daughter of the assassinated former leader, and a revolutionary group, defender of labor and indigenous rights. It was the latter, guided by their leader Max Purillo, who called on Juan’s talents. And for him, it’s blessed bread. A nascent guerrilla, a troubled period politically, and above all: money. A lot of money. To save the country, he is asked to strike a blow by assassinating General Di Stefano. But of course, nothing will go as planned… Collection includes the 4-issue series plus cover gallery and bonus material.

IDW & Glénat Join Forces and Talents in an International Partnership

US company IDW Publishing and French publisher Glénat are launching a new joint initiative, “Original Graphic Novel”, focused on the creation of original comic books, to be published both in France and the United States.

The main purpose of the program is the creation of genre sequential art fit for both markets in terms of storytelling, formats, and themes.

Following the example of the original Disney collection, (e.g. Café Zombo by French author Régis Loisel), the Original Graphic Novel initiative aims to carry out projects of original comics, in a wide variety of genres —science-fiction, fantasy, western, humor, thriller, adventure, and whatever may inspire the authors coming from the American and the Franco-Belgian industries, and wishing to collaborate and mix their talents, styles, and influences.

As the first initiative of its kind, the association between IDW — the 4th largest publisher in the U.S. market — and the Glénat group — 3rd largest in the French market — is a real artistic and commercial bridge between the two countries.

The first original creations to be published in 2018 are:

  • The Highest Housea fantasy project by Mike Carey & Peter Gross, creators of The Unwritten, which was twice nominated for the Hugo Award.
  • Lowlifes, a hard-boiled thriller set in modern day Los Angeles, by Brian Buccellato & Alexis Sentenac.

To be followed by:

  • Sukeban Turbo by Sylvain Runberg & Victor Santos, a wild and violent ride through New York City.
  • Boogeymen, a fantastic tale in which monsters do not live only in children’s minds, by Mathieu Salvia & Djet.
  • A Glimpse of Ashes, a social, urban thriller, by Thomas Day & Aurélien Police.
  • Gunning Down Ramirez, a bloody road-trip reminiscent of Tarantino’s movies, by Nicolas Petrimaux.

Kickstarter Spotlight: Hugo Broyler: a fast-paced future-noir thriller

hugo boyler bookby Mike Kennedy
Publisher/President
Magnetic Press

Hugo Broyler: a fast-paced future-noir thriller on Kickstarter, featuring a murderer’s row of top comic industry artists from around the world.

Nearly two dozen comic industry super-stars have joined writer Mike Kennedy (Star Wars: Underworld, Superman: Infinite City, Lone Wolf 2100, Dead to Rights, Bleedout) and illustrator Francisco Paronzini (Stormwatch PHD, The Immortal Iron Fist, Dead to Rights, Star Wars Tales) in the launch of a Kickstarter campaign for the original graphic novel Hugo Broyler, a fast-paced future-noir thriller, where smart cars roam the streets and hacking is indistinguishable from possession and insanity.

This stylish, full-color blockbuster is packed full of high-speed action and psychological intrigue, and is brought to life by a killer lineup of top comic industry artists contributing pieces from around the world, including cover art by Eduardo Risso (100 Bullets), and pieces fan-favorites such as Bengal (Batgirl, Naja), Ben Templesmith (30 Days of Night, Wormwood, Squidder), Zach Howard (Wild Blue Yonder, The Cape), DJet (Poet Anderson), Matteo De Longis (VOX), Francisco Ruiz Velasco (Pacific Rim, Hellboy), Nathan Fox (DMZ, Haunt, Blue Estate), Ben Caldwell (Prez, Dare Detectives), Rafael Albuquerque (American Vampire, Blue Beetle), Leandro Fernandez (Punisher, Hulk, The Names), Marcelo Frusin (Hellblazer, Loveless), German Peralta (Moon Knight, Axis: Carnage), Max Fiumara (BPRD, Abe Sapien), and Renato Guedes (Wolverine, Superman), Caio Oliveira (Super-Ego, No More Heroes), Daniel Warren Johnson (Ghost Fleet, Space Mullet), and Brydon Everett (The World of Cassyno).

Billed as a high-speed, sci-fi, grindhouse graphic novel, this breakneck thriller paints a future world where frictionless autos careen a ludicrous speeds in the popular sport of Static Velocity Levitation Racing, and international mega-corporations sponsor fearless racing teams who risk life and limb for fame and fortune. When former champ Hugo Broyler wipes out in the final lap of the latest championship, he’s left with little choice but to take wheel work for cash from a local crimelord. But the crash left him with more than just a few scars and a bad attitude – now he’s hearing voices, specifically the ghost of his former, deceased rival. Or maybe someone’s hacking his brain. Or maybe he’s just crazy…

Kennedy and Paronzini seek to raise funds to colorize, re-letter, and print the completed graphic novel, which will be supplemented with an additional 20 pages of world-building story material illustrated by the collection of guest contributors. This extra content will further flesh out the intricate world of cyber-crime, psychological manipulation, and levitation racing revealed in the main storyline.

The campaign offers copies of the book itself in soft- or hard-cover, original artwork, in-world artifacts and merchandise, as well as a mix of 70s/80s style paraphernalia that evokes a retro grindhouse flavor, with a future-sci-fi twist. This is just the first glimpse into the world of Hugo Broyler, says Kennedy, with future chapters, tabletop games, and interactive plans in the works.

Check out HUGO BROYLER today, and help them reach the finish line!

Review: Poet Anderson: The Dream Walker #1

STK664915The comic book prequel to the award-winning animated short film! In the Dream World, power and adventure belong to the Lucid Dreamers, while Night Terrors haunt the troubled and the helpless. A lucky few are watched over by mysterious guardians. The protectors of our shared unconscious lives are known as… …Dream Walkers. Latchkey brothers Jonas and Alan Anderson have discovered a Universe beyond our own, one that can only be reached through dreams. A tangible world filled with fantastic and frightening things, accessible only to those lucky few with  the ability to lucid dream. There, they will find not only mind-blowing adventure, but the key to a vast secret history and their role in the  protection of The Waking World. Usually when I hear about a well-known musician crossing over into comics, I cringe a bit. The results have been mixed with only two or three exceptions. Tom DeLonge (of Blink182 and Angels and Airwaves) enters the comic world with this new series that’s also an animated film. The result? Really good. Backed up by writer Ben Kill and artist Djet, the result is a beautiful debut that blew me away with its visuals. The story is very fun taking two brothers into a dream world, something the visuals are perfect for. What’s fun is one knows the world well, and explains it to his brother, so as he learns the rules, we learn the rule. The subtle differences is some of the most entertaining things, and the world just feels like an amazing dreamscape. The story is solid, but Djet’s art is absolutely stunning. It perfectly matches the animated film, with a seamless transition from one to the other. Just visually amazing, completely beautiful. This original comic series reveals an epic, ageless race for Immortality, Power, and Purpose. I went in not knowing what the expect, and honestly having some trepidation as well. I came away wanting more right away. The series’ first issue sets up an amazing world, and I can’t wait to see where the series goes from here.
