Facebook Fandom Spotlight: X-Men

With X-Men: Days of Future Past debuting in theaters, it felt appropriate to look at how the film stacks up as far as demographics and popularity to other X-Men films and even the various cartoon series.

For this report, I dive into Facebook’s data using key terms and analyzing the “likes” as reported by the system in the United States.

What’s interesting in how this marketing has gone is, Fox for their movie series has focused on an individual page, driving as many folks to that one page as possible. There’s also pages for each individual movie, but you can see they are nowhere near the same amount of likes, the exception being The Wolverine. That movie along with the overall movie page is the most diverse, but still about 2/3 men, 1/3 women. When you take all of the data together, including the movies, generic term, and the cartoons, this 2/3 and 1/3 breakdown is about the average for all of the terms together.

X-Men: Days of Future Past Tops the Box Office

days of future past movie posterIt’s not a surprise, but X-Men: Days of Future Past topped the Memorial Day weekend box office with an estimated $90.7 million for the 3-day Friday-through-Sunday period. Over the four day weekend, the movies will finish around $110 million.

Internationally, the film debuted in 100 countries and will earn an estimated $171 million. It has yet to open in Japan or Spain though. That means when you combine the domestic and international totals, the film has so far earned $281.1 million which is the biggest opening in X-Men movie history.

Days of Future past has had good reviews, earning around 91% on Rotten Tomatoes and an A Cinemascore. Both are a good sign for long legs.

However, when you compare the movie to previous “X” films, especially adjusting for 3-D ticket prices and inflation, the film hasn’t done that amazing. X-Men: The Last Stand earned $102 million over the three day Memorial Day weekend and $124 million over four days in 2006. X-2: X-Men United’s earned $85 million in 2003, X-Men Origins: Wolverine’s earned $85 million opening in 2009.

In other comic movie news Amazing Spider-Man 2 ended up in fifth place this weekend in theater with about $7.8 million earned. Domestically it’s up to $185 million. Overseas the film has earned $489 million, so worldwide, that’s $673.9 million.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier is no longer in the top ten after eight weeks in the theater. It has earned an estimated $1.7 million for the first three days of the Memorial Day weekend.

Movie Review: X-Men: Days of Future Past

days of future past movie posterBased on the classic Marvel comic story, X-Men: Days of Future Past takes the 1981 storyline, and updates it a bit for the big screen. The story is simple, to prevent war in the future, the X-Men send Wolverine to the past in hopes of stopping an event, and changing history.

Days of Future Past brings together the original X-Men trilogy, with X-Men: First Class, as well as the two Wolverine films, creating a movie universe, filled with some continuity bumps here and there. The film is a comic geek’s dream, with more than enough Easter eggs to excite, though there’s more than enough to entertain those who might not be as familiar with the extensive X-Men history.

x-men-days-of-future-pastFrom the opening moments, you know this film is going all out, introducing us to new characters, many who didn’t exist when the original comic was written. It kicks off a visual feast, taking advantage of each member’s powers, and more importantly how they work as a team, to provide a roller coaster film ride that generally doesn’t let up.

But, through all of that action, there’s heart, lots of it, especially from James McAvoy as the young Professor Xavier, and Michael Fassbender as Erik Lehnsherr/Magneto. They each have numerous moments where they get to show off their acting chops, giving us more than just punching and powers. Those two, along with Jennifer Lawrence‘s Mystique make up the core of the film. While it’s Wolverine that travels through time, he’s more of a device, than the focus of the movie.

What’s amazing though is the film doesn’t seem to be overcrowded. With a massive cast, and potentially enough story between future and past to each have a movie, the film balances both quite well.

The fun of it all for me, was seeing this classic story, that still holds up well, come to the big screen. The adaptation, of not just it, but many of the new mutant’s powers was just spot on, especially Blink who is a welcome addition to the movie universe and provides some of the most exciting action sequences. Those sequences especially lend themselves to 3D which really works when it’s used effectively in the film.

Overall, the film had more than enough moments for long time fans, and should be entertaining to new ones as well. It also sets up the X franchise to an eXciting future.
