Transformers-Age-of-Extinction-Poster-Optimus-and-GrimlockTransformers: Age of Extinction ruled the 2014 box office, bringing in $1.087 billion at the box office. It was the top earning film worldwide of the year earning hundreds of millions more than the next film. It was also the most profitable. Apes Rule the Box Office Again. Transformers Rule Globally.

dawn of the planet of the apesDawn of the Planet of the Apes remained in the top spot at the box office. The film earned an additional $36 million, only a 50 percent drop from the previous week’s debut, which isn’t bad since other sequels this summer have seen a much sharper decline.

In other geek movie news… Transformers: Age of Extinction was fifth this past weekend, and to date, the film has earned $227.2 million. The film has a chance to challenge for the top spot as far as domestic grosses.

Domestically, the top comic related films of the summer are Captain America: The Winter Soldier, still holding strong with $258.4 million, X-Men: Days of Future Past is in third at $230.5 million. Transformers is fourth. The Amazing Spider-Man 2, is at $201.6 million for sixth. 300: Rise of An Empire is at 17 with $106.6 million, and Edge of Tomorrow has earned $96.6 million. Snowpiercer is at $3.5 million.

Globally, thinks are a bit different. Transformers: Age of Extinction tops things globally with $886.3 million earned. X-Men is second at $736.3 million. Cap is third at $712.7 million. Edge of Tomorrow has earned $357.9 million. 300: Rise of An Empire has earned $331.1 million. Snowpiercer has earned $83.7 million.

Apes Top Robots at the Box Office

dawn of the planet of the apesIt’s not much of a surprise, but Dawn of the Planet of the Apes topped the weekend box office earning an estimated $73 million. That debut is about a 33% improvement from 2011’s Planet of the Apes which debuted with $54.8 million.

The film’s audience was 58% male and 55% over the age of 25. Diversity was also present with the crowd roughly 48% Caucasian, 23% African-American, 16% Hispanic, and 14% Asian. The film received an A- CinemaScore and is currently at 91% on Rotten Tomatoes.

When it comes to other comic related movies, Transformers: Age of Extinction dropped to second, earning $16.5 million. Domestically the film has earned $209 million and internationally $543.5 million.

The Edge of Tomorrow earned an additional $1.865 million the past weekend to bring it’s domestic gross to $94.55 million in it’s sixth week at the box office. Internationally the film has earned $256 million.

X-Men: Days of Future Past was in 16th place adding a little over $1 million to bring the domestic total to $229.2 million. Internationally the film has earned $731.4 million.

Snowpiercer added $677,000 to it’s total and brings the domestic amount to $2.7 million. Internationally the film has earned $80.2 million. Interestingly in this third week of release the film was released on video on demand, so the amount earned that way isn’t reflected in the total.

As far as worldwide grosses for 2014 of comic related movies, Transformers is now on top with $752.5 million, X-Men is second at $731.4 million, Captain America: The Winter Soldier is third at $712.4 million, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is fourth at $705 million, the Edge of Tomorrow is in tenth place at $350.6 million, 300: Rise of an Empire is twelfth with $331.1 million, Snowpiercer is 33rd with $82.9 million, and We Are the Best! has earned $157,000 to be at spot 150. At the end of the month Guardians of the Galaxy opens, which is likely to vault into one of the top earning spots of the year.

Transformers 4 Remains On Top of the Box Office

Transformers-Age-of-Extinction-Poster-Optimus-and-GrimlockAccording to reports, the Fourth of July weekend was weak at the box office. Without any blockbuster competition,Transformers: Age of Extinction remained at the top of the box office with an estimated $36.4 million. That has the film dropping 64% from the previous weekend and in two weeks it has racked up a domestic total of $714.7 million. Overseas the film has topped $400 million already.

As far as other “comic book” movies Edge of Tomorrow, which is based on the Japanese light novel/manga series All You Need Is Kill, fell to #10 in its fifth weekend. The film added $3.6 million which brings its domestic total to $90.9 million. The film has earned $248.6 million overseas.

Facebook Fandom Spotlight: Snowpiercer and Transformers: Age of Extinction Part 2

Today is the release of part two of my study, using Facebook likes, to see what the impact pre and post opening of a movie is.This past weekend saw the opening of two films of interest to comic fans. Snowpiercer is based on the graphic novel of the same name, and was in limited release, while Transformers dominated the box office with Transformers: Age of Extinction.

The study looks at the various terms in Facebook in the United States. Compared to last week Snowpiercer saw growth mostly in the United States, and particularly among women who increased four points.

Transformers: Age of Extinction opened number one at the box office and according to reports with 64% of the audience as men. The term for the movie is 61.29% male, the same as last week, and Transformers is around 58%. Pretty close to what came out opening weekend, and keeping up the record of the two statistics being pretty close for what we’ve looked at. The biggest change for the stats in general is a gain of about 1 million people for Age of Extinction, most of which were outside the United States.

Below is the statistics from the previous week, and this week’s statistics as well.

Transformers: Age of Extinction Tops the Box Office

Transformers-Age-of-Extinction-Poster-Optimus-and-GrimlockAs expected, Transformers: Age of Extinction topped the box office, bringing in an estimated $100 million in North America, with a $41.6 million opening day. What’s amazing is, the film has also done amazing overseas bringing in around $90 million in China over its first three days. That’s a record for that market, and the film’s final act was set in the country with a high profile Chinese actress in it as well. The film also earned $111.3 million from other foreign markets. That puts it at $301.3 million for the opening weekend. Transformers: Age of Extinction cost an estimated $325 million.

The movie received an A- CinemaScore, and %17 on Rotten Tomatoes, showing off the polarizing reviews.

Not shockingly the film was mostly male, 64%, and older with 57% over 35. Only 27% of the crowd was under the age of 18.

On the other comic book movie front, Edge of Tomorrow has now earned $84.1 million in North America.

X-Men: Days of Future Past wound up in ninth place after its sixth weekend. The film has earned $233.4 million domestically.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 crossed the $200 million mark domestically, with a global total of $703 million.

When it comes to the 2014 rank, Captain America: The Winter Soldier is sitting at the top domestically $257.2 million, Days of Future Past is in third with $223.4 million, and The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is in fifth at $200.2 million.

Globally, things are a bit different. Days of Future Past is sitting on top globally at $712.7 million, The Winter Soldier is second at $711.2 million, and Spider-Man 2 is third at $703.7 million.

Facebook Fandom Spotlight: Snowpiercer and Transformers: Age of Extinction

This coming weekend sees the opening of two films of interest to comic fans. Snowpiercer is based on the graphic novel of the same name while Transformers gets a new movie entry with Transformers: Age of Extinction.

This week I thought it’d be interesting to see how the opening week impacts the Facebook page growth and stats for each. We’ll then return next week and see how these pages changed and how they compare to the opening weekend audience breakdown. In this case, I’ve included every major term for Transformers movies.
