Superman vs. Lobo #1

Written by: Sarah Beattie, Tim Seeley
Art by: Mirka Andolfo

What happens when an indomitable force meets an irritating object? That’s what readers find out when Superman runs into Lobo. Think of it like a boy scout joining a biker gang. What will be worse, the damage Lobo causes on his own, or the chaos of trying to stop him? I smell a team-up, fanboys! Numen is the most popular being in the universe, a god clogging all social channels. And he does not like competition. This means Superman and Lobo must go. Further complicating things is Dr. Flik, a scientist determined to study the last sons of Krypton and Czarnia respectively. What can she glean from the hero who lost everything as a baby and the bad, bad boy who made it all go away just for the heck of it? From writers Tim Seeley and Sarah Beattie the team behind the indie hit Money Shot and Punchline artist Mirka Andolfo comes a hilarious new superhero epic!

Superman vs. Lobo #1

The Man of Steel and Main Man Meet in Superman vs. Lobo #1. Get a First Look

Take two total opposites and have them meet in the DC Universe. Superman fights for truth, justice and the American way. He’s a symbol of the very best in us, a champion of the helpless and oppressed, and just an overall nice guy.

Lobo, to put it ridiculously mildly, is not.

Don’t expect hugs and handshakes when Superman and Lobo meet in Superman vs. Lobo. The DC Black Label series is from writers Tim Seeley and Sarah Beattie and art by Mirka Andolfo and Arif Prianto. With that creative combination expect laughs, fights, and lots of fragging.

Superman vs. Lobo finds the two mega-powered aliens on a collision course as they contend with a jealous, but popular extraterrestrial named Numen and a mysterious doctor intent on studying both of them. Will the Man of Steel and the Main Man destroy the universe fighting with each other, or will they somehow find a way to coexist?

As a DC Black Label series, Superman vs. Lobo is largely free from continuity and content restraints. That means Lobo can swear all he’d like and Superman can as well. Like classic Lobo comics, the miniseries is outrageous at times and plenty of fun.

Superman vs. Lobo #1 will be available in print and as a digital comic book on Tuesday, August 24.

MONEY SHOT #4

Review: Money Shot #1

Money Shot #1

Money Shot #1 is an interesting comic. In part a spoof. In part commentary. And in part serious sci-fi. The comic does a lot and does it all just ok.

Written by Tim Seeley and Sarah Beattie Money Shot is a story about scientists who take to the stars and become pornstars to fund their adventures. It’s the future and an anti-science administration is in charge of the government. Humanity has made contact with aliens and while first they’re welcomed once the galactic community finds out how screwed up humanity is, that invitation is rescinded.

That concept alone is an interesting statement and commentary but from there the comic spirals. It has a sense that it’s trying to be edgy and comedic with the porn angle. So far it doesn’t add a whole lot to the comic. It’s just there. The humor doesn’t quite come off the way it needs to. Beyond being the hook it doesn’t add much at all. Is it porn? Is it comedy? How about sci-fi? What about social commentary? It attempts to be all things and doesn’t really succeed in any.

The art by Rebekah Isaacs is interesting leaning more towards the comedy than sexy. There’s glimpses of nudity but like the story, the art feels like it dances around the subject instead of committing in some ways. But, the art has a lot of personality in design and along with Kurt Michael‘s color pops in some ways.

Money Shot #1 is very much the set up introducing us to the cast of characters and setting up the dynamic. It has glimpses of really smart commentary. But, so far it doesn’t really commit to it or pull off what I think it’s going for. Like porn, it goes through the motions but feels a little empty and fake.
