Gerry Conway has Passed Away
Marvel has announced that legendary comic writer Gerry Conway has passed away. Conway was born on September 10, 1952 in Brooklyn, NY and was a long time fan of comics, even having a fan letter in Fantastic Four #50 and his professional comic was published at age 16 with a short story in House of Secrets #81 for DC. He’d continue to publish stories in anthologies such as Chamber of Darkness and Tower of Shadows for Marvel and All-Star Western and Super DC Giant for DC.
Conway would go on to write for what felt like every major comic for Marvel and DC. That included, but not limited to, Action Comics, Batman, The Brave and the Bold, Challengers of the Unknown, Detective Comics, The Fury of Firestorm, House of Mystery, House of Secrets, Jonah Hex, Justice League of America, New Gods, Superman, Wonder Woman, Amazing Spider-Man, Avengers, Captain America, Captain Marvel, Carnage, Conan the Barbarian, Daredevil, The Incredible Hulk, Iron Man, The Spectacular Spider-Man, Sub-Mariner, Superman vs. the Amazing Spider-Man, and so much more. He worked for Atlas/Seaboard Comics, DC Comics, Disney, Eclipse, First Comics, Marvel, Papercutz, Skywald Publications, Topps Comics, and Warren Publications.
Beyond comics, he has credits for 1983’s Fire and Ice and 1984’s Conan the Destroyer. For television his credits include G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero, The Transformers, The Centurions, My Little Pony, Dino-Riders, Father Dowling Mysteries, Jake and the Fatman, Matlock, Batman: The Animated Series, Diagnosis: Murder, Hercules: The Legendary Journeys, Law & Order, Law & Order: Criminal Intent, and more.
Conway brought us iconic moments in comics such as the death of Gwen Stacy and co-creator of the Punisher and Ms. Marvel. His impact on comics and influence on today’s creators is undebatable.
He is survived by his wife, Laura Conway.
The industry has lost one of the greats and our thoughts go out to his family, friends, and fans.
