Gerry Conway has Passed Away

THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN (1963) #121 by Gerry Conway and Gil Kane
THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN (1963) #121 by Gerry Conway and Gil Kane

Marvel has announced that legendary comic writer Gerry Conway has passed away. Conway was born on September 10, 1952 in Brooklyn, NY and was a long time fan of comics, even having a fan letter in Fantastic Four #50 and his professional comic was published at age 16 with a short story in House of Secrets #81 for DC. He’d continue to publish stories in anthologies such as Chamber of Darkness and Tower of Shadows for Marvel and All-Star Western and Super DC Giant for DC.

Conway would go on to write for what felt like every major comic for Marvel and DC. That included, but not limited to, Action Comics, Batman, The Brave and the Bold, Challengers of the Unknown, Detective Comics, The Fury of Firestorm, House of Mystery, House of Secrets, Jonah Hex, Justice League of America, New Gods, Superman, Wonder Woman, Amazing Spider-Man, Avengers, Captain America, Captain Marvel, Carnage, Conan the Barbarian, Daredevil, The Incredible Hulk, Iron Man, The Spectacular Spider-Man, Sub-Mariner, Superman vs. the Amazing Spider-Man, and so much more. He worked for Atlas/Seaboard Comics, DC Comics, Disney, Eclipse, First Comics, Marvel, Papercutz, Skywald Publications, Topps Comics, and Warren Publications.

Beyond comics, he has credits for 1983’s Fire and Ice and 1984’s Conan the Destroyer. For television his credits include G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero, The Transformers, The Centurions, My Little Pony, Dino-Riders, Father Dowling Mysteries, Jake and the Fatman, Matlock, Batman: The Animated Series, Diagnosis: Murder, Hercules: The Legendary Journeys, Law & Order, Law & Order: Criminal Intent, and more.

Conway brought us iconic moments in comics such as the death of Gwen Stacy and co-creator of the Punisher and Ms. Marvel. His impact on comics and influence on today’s creators is undebatable.

He is survived by his wife, Laura Conway.

The industry has lost one of the greats and our thoughts go out to his family, friends, and fans.

Marvel and DC Continue their Crossover with Superman and Spider-Man Treasury Editions and More!

DC and Marvel are reigniting their legendary collaboration and are continuing their cross-company publishing initiative through 2026. Timed to the 50th anniversary of Superman vs. The Amazing Spider-Man, the two publishers will release a series of reprint and original crossover comic books beginning in January 2026 that honors the past and propels comic book storytelling into the future.

Kicking things off in 2026, DC will reprint two Treasury Edition (10 1/8” x 13 5/16”) comic books that celebrate the legacy of the original DC/Marvel crossovers. On January 7, 2026, DC will publish Treasury Edition 50th Anniversary of Superman vs. The Amazing Spider-Man #1, a facsimile edition of the groundbreaking comic book that first united DC’s Man of Tomorrow and Marvel’s legendary Web-Slinger. DC will then print another facsimile edition on February 4, DC and Marvel Present: Superman and Spider-Man Treasury Edition #1, a reprint of Marvel Treasury Edition #28, bringing another classic out-of-print team-up back to comic book shops.

These legacy reprints set the stage for two brand-new crossover comic books arriving in spring 2026. DC will publish Superman/Spider-Man #1 in March, followed by Marvel Comics publishing Spider-Man/Superman #1 in April. Each one-shot comic book will feature original stories starring two of the most iconic characters in comics history, with creative teams to be announced soon.

DC and Marvel’s crossover initiative continuing into 2026 is a celebration of comics’ enduring power. With record-breaking sales and a growing audience across generations, comic books are at the center of the cultural conversation. Comics have never been more vital, more visible, and more vibrantly alive. By bringing Superman and Spider-Man back together after 50 years for new stories with new writers and artists, DC and Marvel are honoring a shared legacy while inviting fans into a new era of collaboration, creativity, and character-driven storytelling.

Further details on creative teams, storylines, and variant covers for Superman/Spider-Man #1 and Spider-Man/Superman #1 will be revealed by DC and Marvel Comics in the coming months.

Lost Marvels No. 1 Tower of Shadows is a must for fans of horror or classic Marvel comics

In 1969, with its revolutionary superhero line well established, Marvel took a chance on the kind of supernatural, EC-style anthology series that had been banned since the formation of the Comics Code in the 1950s. Tower of Shadows featured a staggering array of artists and writers, including Neal Adams, Jim Steranko, Barry Windsor-Smith, John Buscema, Gene Colan, Wally Wood, Stan Lee, Roy Thomas, John Romita, Johnny Craig, Marie Severin, Gerry Conway, and Bernie Wrightson, to name a few. Freed from the conventions of the superhero adventure, these creators brought their storytelling skills to a more quietly sinister genre, producing atmospheric gems of twisted suspense and sardonic horror.

Not only do these nine issues feature Marvel’s best creators working at their peak, but Tower of Shadows is one of the lost, never-collected Marvels. In the first of a new series of Lost Marvels, Fantagraphics and Marvel join forces to introduce these pages to a new generation of readers and restore this series to its rightful place in comics history. This gorgeous volume brings every Tower of Shadows story and cover to life in vivid color and features background and analysis by comics journalist Michael Dean.

Marvel launches a Giant-Sized Celebration for 50 years of Giant-Sized Storytelling!

Throughout Marvel’s historic Bronze Age of the 1970s, there were tales so titanic, adventures so grand, and battles so larger than life that they could only be told in special Giant-Size comics! Now, 50 years later, Giant-Size is back and more pivotal than ever! Throughout 2024, Marvel will celebrate the milestone anniversary of the first Giant-Size comic with all-new spectacular one-shots featuring your favorite heroes, starting with January’s Giant-Size Spider-Man #1.

Before crossover events became the norm, True Believers knew that Giant-Size issues were home to Marvel’s most earth-shattering developments! During its original run, the pages of Giant-Size included legendary Marvel moments like the groundbreaking debut of the all-new, all-different X-Men, the wedding of Vision and Scarlet Witch, Spider-Man’s run-in with Dracula, and the first appearances of Multiple Man, Lilith, Korvac, and Tigra! Ever since then, when fans see Giant-Size on a comic, they know they were in for an epic ride, and these newGiant-Size one-shots will pack the same punch! These new installments will also include backup reprints of key stories, giving readers a gigantic dose of Marvel brilliance, past and present!

First up, Miles Morales: Spider-Man scribe Cody Ziglar and artist Iban Coello spin a showdown between the next generation’s Spider-Man and Venom in Giant-Size Spider-Man #1! Dylan Brock has a bone…or a brain…to pick with Miles Morales in a Giant-Size Spidey story that can’t be missed! Giant-Size Spider-Man #1 will also reprint Ultimate Comics: Spider-Man #22 by Spidey-legends Brian Michael Bendis and Sara Pichelli that features the epic conclusion of Miles’ first battle with Ultimate Venom!

And that’s not all! In December, Marvel proudly re-presents the very first Giant-Size title ever, Giant-Size Super-Stars #1, in a special facsimile edition. Experience one of the all-time great Marvel comic books from industry legends Gerry Conway and Rich Buckler, in its original form, ads and all! The Thing and the Hulk have one of the most powerhouse rivalries in the entire Marvel Universe – and in 1974, it spilled out of the pages of both of their own books into a double-length slobberknocker! And like all the best bouts, this one takes place in the ring at Madison Square Garden – with the Fantastic Four watching on! In the green corner, it’s Bruce Banner’s incredible alter ego! In the orange corner, it’s bashful Benjamin J. Grimm! But there’s a twist to this fight that you won’t believe – and the formidable warrior Thundra is on hand to tag in! Will it be Clobberin’ Time for the Hulk? Or will the ever-lovin’ Thing get smashed?

What If? Dark: Spider-Gwen #1 is a comic legend revisiting a classic storyline

What If? Dark: Spider-Gwen #1

I might get hate letters from the over-sixty crowd for saying this, but 50 years after he killed off Gwen Stacy in the legendary Amazing Spider-Man #121, plotter Gerry Conway does an incredible job course correcting it in What If…? Dark: Spider-Gwen #1, which is co-plotted and scripted by Jody Houser with art and colors from Ramon F. Bachs and Dee Cunniffe. Of course, this comic won’t have the historical value of “The Night Gwen Stacy Died”, which made superhero comics grow up for better or worse with the death of a key Amazing Spider-Man supporting character and also set a precedent for the “women in refrigerators” trope. But it’s a heartstrings-tearing look at loss and revenge through the characters of Gwen Stacy and Harry Osborn that definitely lives up to that “Dark” subtitle while offering a sliver of hope and heroism in the end. In many ways, it ends up being a classic Spider-Man comic, but with Gwen Stacy instead of Peter Parker picking up the mantle as she takes responsibility for a big mistake she made and defending New York as a masked hero.

A recurring theme throughout What If Dark: Spider-Gwen is the toll that secret identities take on interpersonal relationships beginning with Gwen realizing that she never really knew Peter Parker, and that Harry Osborn never knew him either as well as his father Norman Osborn. Conway, Houser, and Bachs channel pain and loss throughout this one-shot, and most panels of Gwen are her alone channeling her grief over Peter’s loss into revenge. Even though Mary Jane offers her comfort and companionship, Gwen doesn’t bond with her until the very end of the comic after her life has plunged even deeper into darkness. What If Dark: Spider-Gwen is an elegy to the isolated, lonely superhero constrained by turn of the century genre conventions and lacking the vibrant community around contemporary heroes like Miles Morales, Jaime Reyes, Kamala Khan, and even Superman when Brian Michael Bendis wrote him.

While Conway and Houser’s writing adds new psychological depth to the character of Gwen Stacy that wasn’t present in her original stories, Ramon F. Bachs and Cunniffe’s art capture the look and the feel of that transitional period between the Silver Age and Bronze Age of superhero comics. The original Green Goblin suit and the Osborns’ tire tread haircuts are intact, but there are plenty of shadows, dark warehouses, and guns. The heroes might still be wearing primary colors, but Dirty Harry and Death Wish were showing in the cinema so putting on a trench coat and extralegally shooting a criminal wasn’t out of the question although Gwen justifies her pointing her father’s service piece at the Green Goblin to be justice because it belonged to a former police officer. The confrontation between Gwen, Harry, and the Green Goblin has masks and costumes, but lacks the wordiness and pro-wrestling-style fight choreography of the excerpt from Amazing Spider-Man #121 that opens the book.

Bachs’ art does the heavy lifting in the big emotional climax with some gorgeous, nostalgia-tinged work from him and Dee Cunniffe demonstrating how much Gwen loved Peter and also acts as a nice homage to Jeph Loeb and the late Tim Sale’s lovely Spider-Man: Blue comic. It’s a gorgeous page with sparse narration from Houser that is immediately undercut by the barrel gun and a reminder of the Dark in What If? Dark. This page and the whole last act of the comic are a reminder that all wearers of the Spider-Man mantle come from tragedy and an inability to stop bad things from happening like Harry Osborn becoming the “New Goblin”, or the death of their friends, families, and lovers.

Despite the title, What If? Dark Spider-Gwen isn’t a piece of edgelord superheroics. It’s actually a comics legend getting to revisit one of his classic storylines and with the help of co-writer Houser and artists Bachs and Cunniffe, Gerry Conway gets to give Gwen Stacy agency and a robust character arc even if the inciting incident of the story (Spider-Man drowning) is a little flimsy.
