Fear the Man-Thing in April with Spider-Man: Curse of the Man-Thing

Announced last month, Marvel is honoring the 50th anniversary of Man-Thing with a new series. Starting in March with Avengers: Cure of the Man-Thing #1, the three-part Marvel Universe-spanning event will continue in April with Spider-Man: Curse of the Man-Thing #1. In this installment, critically acclaimed writer Steve Orlando (Martian ManhunterBatmanWonder Woman) will be joined by artist Alberto Foche who makes his Marvel Comics debut with an unforgettable tale. The first issue features a cover by Daniel Acuña with a variant by Nick Bradshaw.

Man-Thing’s supernatural abilities have been pirated thanks to the new Marvel villain, Harrower, a zealot intent on clearing humanity off the board so a new species can get a shot at the top. The world burns and fear is the accelerant! Meanwhile, Spider-Man races across New York desperate to avert disaster and find the one man that just might be able to get through to Man-Thing…his former colleague Curt Connors, A.K.A. The Lizard! But deep within the Man-Thing’s psyche, it’s Spider-Man that discovers something he never expected: a devilish secret, and a doctor seeking redemption.

Since his creation by Stan Lee, Roy Thomas, Gerry Conway, and Gray Morrow in 1971’s Savage Tales #1, the misunderstood swamp monster has taught readers the true meaning of fear in thought-provoking tales by legendary creators such as Steve Gerber and R.L. Stine. Prepare to burn at the Man-Thing’s touch once again when Spider-Man Cure of the Man-Thing #1 hits stands this April.

People’s History of the Marvel Universe, Week 18: The Social Worker and the COP

When we last left our heroes, Captain America and the Falcon had returned to New York City after liberating a Caribbean island from Nazis and once again foiling the Red Skull’s Cosmic Cube machinations. Upon their return in #120, the question became what the status quo would be for the new partnership in their new environment.

(Pictured: two bros just broing around, casually shirtless.
It’s not like they do this all the time or anything.)

The new status quo would take a few issues to show up, but starting with #139, for almost two years – two years which saw Captain America and the Falcon handed off from Stan Lee[1] to Steve Englehart (by way of Gary Friedrich and Gerry Conway)[2] – Cap writers went back to one of the oldest scenarios in comics.

By night, Captain America and the Falcon would patrol New York City as vigilante superheroes. By day, they would adopt civilian identities that spoke to their ideas of civic engagement: Sam Wilson returned to his job as a social worker, Steve Rogers took up a new job as a cop. Both worked the Harlem beat.[3]

These are their stories.

Gerry Conway Wants to Take Back the Punisher Logo and is Raising Money for Black Lives Matter

The Punisher skull logo has been adopted by the police and their supporters despite the character being a vigilante working outside of the law. The extrajudicial handling of crime seems to be the draw with the symbol blended with the “Blue Lives Matter” coloring and displayed in support. The symbol has been seen sported by police recently and has a long history within the police. Disney and Marvel have done nothing to curtail the use of the symbol as it’s been coopted and proliferated online and in the real world.

The Punisher debuted in 1974 and was created by Gerry Conway, John Romita, Sr., and Ross Andru. The character debuted as a villain targeting Spider-Man and over the years has generally evolved into an anti-hero though his exact depiction has varied. Conway has been vocal against the use of the symbol by the police and others and is currently attempting to take the symbol back.

The comic creator has launched a charity fundraising effort through CustomInk where the sales will benefit Black Lives Matter.

For too long, symbols associated with a character I co-created have been co-opted by forces of oppression and to intimidate black Americans. This character and symbol was never intended as a symbol of oppression. This is a symbol of a systematic failure of equal justice. It’s time to claim this symbol for the cause of equal justice and Black Lives Matter.
–Gerry Conway

Currently, over $24,000 has been raised for the organiztion through four designs and over 1,800 shirts sold.

You can get an awesome shirt now for a good cause and help “take back” the Punisher from those who clearly don’t understand the character.
