Jamie Foxx is in Talks to Reprise his Role as Electro

Jamie Foxx

The Hollywood Reporter is reporting that Jamie Foxx is in “final talks” to reprise his role as Electro in the next installment of Spider-Man starring Tom Holland and being produced by Marvel and Sony.

Jon Watts who directed the first two films will return for the third film which has a tentative release date of December 17, 2021.

Most of the cast including Holland, Zendaya, Marisa Tomei, Jacob Batalon, and Tony Revolori will return. Kevin Feige and Amy Pascal are producing.

Foxx played Electro in The Amazing Spider-Man 2 which starred Andrew Garfield. The film earned $708.9 million globally but was considered a failure which led to Sony and Marvel striking their eventual deal that brought Spider-Man into the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Speculation has run rampant as to how this might happen and if this will be the same character brought over through the multiverse established in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. Electro is one of the original members of the Spider-Man rogues group the Sinister Six and the first two films have featured members of that group. Sony has been attempting to create their own Spider-Man universe which saw the release of Venom and has numerous other projects in the works. A film focused on the Sinister Six has been rumored for quite some time. The second set of Spider-Man films with Garfield teased the group which originally consisted of Doctor Octopus, Vulture, Electro, Mysterio, Sandman, and Kraven the Hunter. Five of the six characters have appeared in previous Spider-Man films. Two in the Toby Maguire films, one with Garfield, and two with Holland.

J.K. Simmons returned in Spider-Man: Far From Home as J. Jonah Jameson, a role he played in previous films, but the brief cameo gave no indication this was the same Jameson from the previous Spider-Man films. Simmons’ Jameson didn’t appear in The Amazing Spider-Man films but he has also reprised the role for animated shows like Lego Marvel Super Heroes: Maximum Overload, Avengers Assemble, Hulk and the Agents of S.M.A.S.H., and Ultimate Spider-Man.

Review: Red Skull #1

rs001There are likely those that think that the well of ideas for Secret Wars might already be exhausted, between the new material and the inspiration from previous crossovers or other inspirations.  If thinking only inside of Marvel, then they might be right, but Red Skull #1 proves that there is still some more distance to go in this massive crossover.  Although it draws upon characters from across Battleworld, this series is one which is at home in the heart of the Deadlands, the realm of the crossover title of Marvel Zombies vs. Age of Ultron.  The setup is not like anything from Marvel though, as it is essentially a Secret Wars version of the Suicide Squad.  This group of supervillains only has one job, to travel to the Deadlands and to prove that the Red Skull died after being exiled there.

The team is made up of an unlikely grouping of villains, similar once again to the Suicide Squad comparison – Electro, Moonstone, Magneto, Lady Deathstrike, Jack O’Lantern, and Bucky Barnes, seemingly acting in the Rick Flag role.  They are recruited by Crossbones, a one-time loyal follower of the Red Skull who has given him up for a blind allegiance to Doom.  He leads the team to the brink of danger before stopping to stand guard over the portal from which he expects them all to try to instantly escape.  The remainder of the story comes across as a bit of a juvenile wish list, with zombies, robots and dinosaurs, but the action never lets up in this exciting issue as the team get pretty close to discovering the source of their mission.

This issue proves that there are still some fresh ideas floating around in the somewhat constrained world of Secret Wars.  This has proven to be a winning formula elsewhere, and works well here too.  The combination of characters is broad, but it seems like they fit well together, even if they don’t have much of a chance yet at this point.  With so many other Secret Wars inspired series being born after this crossover, it would be nice to see one inspired by the same concept as presented here.  Many people will look at the title for this series and likely not give it a chance, but for those that do, they will find something pretty fun and probably what will become one of the highlights of the entire crossover.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 Trailer Hints at Vulture and Doc Ock

We knew that the Amazing Spider-Man 2, out May 2014, will feature both Rhino and Electro, and rumors ran that we might see a version of the Green Goblin. Two days ago a poster was released that confirmed we’d see some version of Green Goblin as well.

amazing spider-man-2 posterToday’s first trailer not only shows the Green Goblin (or whatever version of the character this is) will be playing an active role, but also hints we might also see two more classic characters, the Vulture and Doctor Octopus.

Here’s two screen shots of the Goblin:

amazing_spiderman_2_vulture_doc_ockThose five villains would be a large portion of Spider-Man’s infamous foes, the Sinister Six. The first Amazing Spider-Man film featured Curt Connors aka the Lizard who has also been a member of the group (along with Mysterio, Kraven the Hunter, and more).

Guesses if we’ll see a sixth member and what would you want the line-up to be?
