Review: Savage Circus #4

Savage Circus #4

It’s chaos in the town and Brady is tasked with capturing the thieves. Of course, he also has to not get killed by wild animals in Savage Circus #4. The issue is a decent one with some solid action moments. Overall, it isn’t quite as fast-paced as the previous issue.

The first three issues were the setup for what’s to come. They put Brady in the position of dealing with thieves while having to dodge the vicious animals. With his quest beginning, writer Brendan Columbus gives Brady some company in his mission. Columbus has set up Brady as an interesting character. While he’s a sheriff, he’s also been thrown into that position. He comes off as a bit of a slacker who will be forced to stand up and do the right thing. But, that also means he’s going to likely screw that up. Michelle will be his balance. She shows she has a bit more brains and a bit of a knack for problem-solving. Brady is the blunt instrument to Michelle’s finesse and the two together on the case will be an interesting combo.

Columbus gives us some action and more of the cinematic feel for the issue as Brady heads to Michelle to see how she’s doing before he’s off in his mission. The visuals and what happens has more of a horror vibe going for it. That’s helped by Al Barrionuevo‘s art. His layouts delivers a play-by-play aspect to what happens in the use of panels and expressions of each character. While what happens feels a bit fantastical (Brady would not be functioning) Barrionuevo’s style also delivers a bit of humor to things as well. Candice Han‘s colors are fantastic delivering a look that has both a horror vibe but also has a bright aspect to it. It fits the rather playful and over the top aspect of the concept of the series. Dave Sharpe‘s lettering is consistently solid and helps emphasize the emotion of it all.

Savage Circus #4 is another solid entry in the series. While it doesn’t quite feel as packed in as previous issues and slows things down a little, it’s a lull that helps emphasize the action in some ways. It’s an issue that continues to set up Brady’s mission giving him someone to play off of and getting rid of the Rambo feel the series could easily have gone. Most importantly, Savage Circus #4 keeps its eyes on entertainment mixing in humor with the action for a result that feels like the quiet before the likely (shit) storm.

Savage Circus #4

Review: Savage Circus #3

Savage Circus #3

Savage Circus has been a fun disaster comic mixed with a heist and we’ve been here for it every step. Savage Circus #3 has the animals on the loose terrorizing a town but there’s that whole theft of the town’s money that has to be dealt with too. The focus of the series shifts a little bit from chaos and disaster to the animals being an obstacle while the mission for the local police gets a bit mixed.

Savage Circus #3 is that transition from the setup of the series which were the first two issues. Writer Brendan Columbus gives us some moments of reflection and setup that tells you things aren’t going to go well for those involved.

The series involves a crashed train full of wild and dangerous animals and this happens just as a group of individuals are stealing a giant piggy bank from a town. The second issue saw the animals attack killing members of the town and causing them to scramble for safety. Now, the two police officers need to do their thing, protect the town and catch the criminals.

Savage Circus #3 focuses on Brady, the officer whose father was the previous Sheriff and died on duty. Columbus does a fantastic job of fleshing out the character giving us a bit more of a reason to care about what happens to him. He has moments with his brother as he goes to do his duty and Sheriff Henley who discuss Brady’s legacy. We get a better understanding of what happened to his father and the weight that sits on his shoulders. He rounds out as a character in this issue and turns from a simple action hero cutout to realized character with history and emotions.

Columbus also does a fantastic job of mixing action, humor, and heart. There’s the mentioned moments around Brady’s interactions with his brother and Sheriff. Those deliver the heart. The humor and action also come from Brady as he heads to the Sheriff’s station being chased by deadly Callways as he also happens upon one of the criminals. So, as he runs, he reads him his rights and guides him to jail. It’s a moment that just has so many funny beats and such great timing. It’s ridiculous but endearing in a way and just outright humorous. It’s a break from what could easily dive into a series filled with tense dread. Columbus is clearly mixing things up attempting to keep it fun.

The art by Al Barrionuevo continues to nail it. Candice Han‘s colors pop. Dave Sharpe‘s lettering is spot on. The art team is on fire for the issue nailing Columbus’ beats. the tender moments feel like that. You feel out of breath as Brady and his suspect run for their lives. The art delivers those highs and lows emotionally and gives us some “fuck yeah” moments as well. When Brady steps up to “his destiny”, arming himself and being given orders by the Sheriff, it’s hard to not cheer on and get pumped at the action to come.

Savage Circus #3 is a build up moment where the hero regroups and gets ready for the battle to come. It takes the first two issues setup and transitions it to the action to come. It adds depth to our hero. It just nails it in every way getting me even more excited for what’s to come.

Review: Savage Circus #2

Savage Circus #2

Take rampaging Gremlins and replace them with a circus worth of angry animals and the rampage and you have Savage Circus. If the first issue was the setup, Savage Circus #2 is the ship hitting the iceberg. It’s an issue full of disaster and it’s super entertaining.

Writer Brendan Columbus really gets the ball rolling with this issue that amps of the carnage to 11 compared to the first issue. And comparing it to the debut is partially what’s fascinating. The debut issue focused on a couple of characters and a heist with the train being the disaster on the horizon. The second issue continues the heist aspect of the issue but it turns into a side aspect. It’s kind of the deus ex machina to get the ball rolling for the release of the savage beasts from the savage circus.

It’s an interesting choice to go this direction and has me wanting to see where things go in future issues as far as that aspect. It’s easily something that just got us from point A to point B or play further into the series. As a reader, I’m unsure if how much that opening hook of a heist will matter as things continue.

But, lets face it. The beasts on the loose is the draw now. The train is off the tracks and pissed off animals want some revenge for the abuses they’ve experienced. Yes, Columbus gives the animals some motivation as to why they’re killing people. And boy do they kill people. There’s an over the top level of carnage and death all rendered in creative gore.

Artist Al Barrionuevo seems to have fun with the destruction and death once the animals are loose. The imagery is over the top to take things into comical level. And that’s partially what makes it fun. Barrionuevo is joined by Candice Han on color and Dave Sharpe on lettering. Han delivers splashes of blood without making it overwhelming. The art is an orgy of destruction that’ll put a smile on readers’ faces.

Savage Circus #2 is a solid second issue that really gets things rolling, or derailed might be a better way to put it. The issue ups the carnage and action to a level that’s hard to not laugh at. It’s so over the top once things get going that it’s a bit amazing at how many ways the creative team has come up with in killing individuals. It’s a fun symphony of destruction during this winter season.

Review: Savage Circus #1

Savage Circus #1

There’s some classic stories that take place during Christmas. While many will think of classics that have to do with specifically with the holiday and celebrations it’s those that use it as a backdrop that are more entertaining to me. Die Hard and Gremlins are two examples and two of my favorite films. Savage Circus #1 reminds me of both of those not just with the setting but even the concept to some degree.

Savage Circus #1 presents a collision course of a first issue. Some of the comic is about a traveling circus called the Savage Circus whose features are the most dangerous creatures out there. In a small town, a gang is pulling off a job to steal hundreds of thousands of dollars. All of this is happening during a snowstorm during Christmas. You can see where all of the plots come together for what will be a wild ride of crime and strange creatures destroying things. And the first issue is laser-focused on setting that all up.

Written by Brendan Columbus, there’s something very familiar about this debut. And that’s not a bad thing at all. The characters all fit their roles and clearly are built on types we’ve seen before with relationships we’ve seen before. And in that way it’s good as we can easily dive into the story focused on the setup and whatever is eventually to come. We don’t need a lot of depth and backstory to the characters because Columbus quickly establishes for us as to who they are.

Al Barrionuevo‘s art helps establish that familiarity and ease. With colors by Candice Han and lettering by Dave Sharpe, the art leans heavily into the familiar. Again, that’s not a bad thing at all. It sets up the town and world easily and allows us to dive in quickly with the numerous moving parts. The local police have a familiar look to themselves that immediately tells us it’s a small town. Those in the town have a blue-collar aspect about them letting us know this isn’t a wealthy community but one that’s struggling. It helps get us through the intro and to the main attraction coming in the second issue.

Savage Circus #1 is an interesting debut. While I wish it got more towards what’s coming, it balances all of its moving parts well. There’s a familiarity about it that allowed me to sink into the story waiting for what’s to come. I wasn’t caught up in the details or each character’s personality, each fits a “role”. Instead, we’re getting a “disaster” story where the action, thrills, and kills, will be the draw. The first issue is the quiet before that storm.
