NYCC 2013: The Six Million Dollar Man Season 6 by Dynamite

Dynamite and NBCUniversal Television Consumer Products are proud to announce that the beloved television action hero Colonel Steve Austin will celebrate his 40th Anniversary by returning to comics in the upcoming Six Million Dollar Man: Season 6 series, set immediately following the classic television continuity.  Featuring the writing talent of award-winning author James Kuhoric and artwork by Juan Antonio Ramirez, the upcoming Six Million Dollar Man: Season 6 comic series will launch with covers by legendary painter Alex Ross.

A direct follow-up to the classic television series, the Season 6 series pits Steve Austin and his trusted handler Oscar Goldman against a rogue faction of the OSI.  A new type of infiltration agent is the key to the treacherous power play – one that is robotic and completely obedient to the traitors.  Can a soulless machine make the world’s first Bionic Man obsolete?  Six Million Dollar Man: Season 6 will hold special appeal for longtime fans, as the infamous villain Maskatron debuts for the first time within story continuity with a violent and terrifying purpose.  Furthermore, Austin’s role as a NASA pilot will return to prominence, as conspiracies involving extraterrestrial technology and close encounters take root at the OSI.

The Six Million Dollar Man: Season 6 will be solicited in Diamond Comic Distributors’ December 2013 Previews catalog, the premiere source of merchandise for the comic book specialty market, and slated for release beginning in February 2014 it’ll be available through digital platforms courtesy of Comixology, iVerse, and Dark Horse Digital.

The Art of Jock will include hundreds of gorgeous illustrations from his years as an artist for comic books, film, and more.

Jock is the award-winning British artist renowned for his edgy and dynamic style and gritty design aesthetic.  He leapt to fame with his work on Judge Dredd for 2000AD, before collaborating with then-editor Andy Diggle on the futuristic crime caper Lenny Zero.  This swiftly led to Jock being voted Best Newcomer at the National Comics Awards in 2001.  In the decade since then, Jock has provided commercial art and graphic design for numerous internationally renowned clients including Pontiac, Sony, British Airways, Saatchi & Saatchi, Nintendo, Criterion, the NBA and the BBC.  He has worked for every major Hollywood studio including Disney, Paramount, Universal, Warner Bros., and Sony Pictures, producing key art, concept design, and promotional imagery for Batman Begins, Hancock, Children of Men, Hanna, and Iron Man 3, as well as the big-screen adaptations of Dune, Dredd, and Battleship.  He created in-game artwork for Army of Two: The 40th Day for EA Games, as well as cover art for Ubisoft’s popular Driver franchise.

In comics, Jock is best known for co-creating the New York Times bestselling graphic novel series The Losers with Andy Diggle.  His character designs were followed closely in the feature film adaptation, and his original art was integrated into on-screen transitions and the animated credits sequence.  Jock’s promotional poster for The Losers was voted one of the Top 10 movie posters of 2010 by MTV.  Previous work includes the original graphic novel Hellblazer: Pandemonium for DC Comics/Vertigo.  His stunning covers for numerous titles including X-Men, Daredevil, and Scalped led to his being nominated as Best Cover Artist at the Eisner Awards.  Jock and writer Scott Snyder recently won the Stan Lee Award for Best Series for their work on Batman: The Black Mirror.  He is currently working with actor and comedian Peter Serafinowicz on an original comic-book project, continuing to produce officially licensed screen prints for boutique poster company Mondo, and writing and drawing his first miniseries for Marvel Comics, Savage Wolverine.  Born in Glasgow, Scotland, he now lives and works in Devon.

The Art of Jock will be solicited in Diamond Comic Distributors’ Previews catalog, the premiere source of merchandise for the comic book specialty market, and slated for release in 2014.  Comic book fans are encouraged to reserve copies of The Art of Jock with their local comic book shop or hobby specialty store.

Review: Superman/Wonder Woman #1

superman wonder woman #1 coverSuperman/Wonder Woman #1 begins a bold new series that details the relationship between The Man of Steel and the Warrior Princess as rising star writer Charles Soule is joined by fan favorite artist Tony S. Daniel to tell the tale of a romance that will shake the stars themselves. These two super-beings love each other, but not everyone shares their joy. Some fear it, some test it—and some will try to kill for it. Some say love is a battlefield, but where Superman and Wonder Woman are concerned it spells Doomsday!

When I first heard about the launch of this series, all I could say was “huh.” Some descriptions later, I scratched my head as to what to expect. What the talented Soule pulls off is a first issue that balances the human and super sides of these two characters and that’s exactly what I hoped this series would be.

Superman/Wonder Woman has a dual role, showing these two titans in their complicated life. The tone right off is fun and epic at the same time throwing the two against a villain that’ll amp up the excitement even more for the second issue.

In between the action sequences we get quieter moments of the two characters interacting with friends, and eventually each other, that adds and define who they are and more about their relationship. Too often other writers have focused on the super and not enough of the human, Soule nails the careful balance between the two.

This issue features an amazing wraparound gatefold cover that opens up to a triptych with Superman and Wonder Woman in the center and that kicks off Daniel’s excellent art. Not only does he capture the characters in both quiet and action sequences, but also uses angles and panels in an interesting way that captures the vibe of each moment. We see the two in the beginning peacefully flying through the air, with the dark clouds underneath, the tone of what we’ve been promised we can expect going forward.

Overall, just in this first issue Soule has made me understand the relationship between these characters much better and given us a hint as to what they might see in each other, and offer each other. In the first issue he’s given us some solid action mixed with humanizing interaction. Soule is adding depth to characters that can both use some in their other series. These are depictions of these characters I can enjoy and he’s got me hooked to see what’s in store next.
