Jean Grey Flies Solo This Spring For All-New Series!

Like the Phoenix before her, Jean Grey rises from the ashes this Spring to headline her very first ongoing series! Marvel has officially announced Jean Grey #1 – an all-new series from blockbuster creators Dennis Hopeless and Victor Ibanez with a cover by David Yardin! Be there as the fiery young heroine sets out on her own and prepares for the fight of her life!

A vision. A premonition. A warning. The Phoenix is coming back to Earth. It could be tomorrow, it could be years from now. But it’s on its way. Determined to not succumb to the fate that befell her adult counterpart, Jean will fight the future and forge her own destiny. One problem – she’s not ready. Not even close. So, on a quest to save her own life, she’ll travel across the Marvel Universe, honing her gifts under the tutelage of the greatest heroes and teachers. Even that may not be enough. Can Jean ever hope to escape the Phoenix? Or is the cycle of death and rebirth doomed to repeat itself?

In an interview, Hopeless said:

She needs to level up. She needs to become a prepared Jean Grey by the time the Phoenix arrives. So she puts herself through a lot of things to try to get ready for something she can’t really prepare for. And I think a lot of people can relate to that.

The heat is on this Spring as Jean Grey sets out on a journey that will turn her world upside down. Because if she fails – all is lost.

Review: Extraordinary X-Men #15

extraordinary_x_men__15-1The latest issue of Extraordinary X-Men has us moving between worlds as Storm and Magik try and get back the soul sword from a possessed Sabina while Nightcrawler and Co. try and save an Apocalypse possessed Colossus. The ladies manage to gain the trust and assistance of the Mystics who aid Storm and Magik in their trip to Limbo to save it. Colossus seems to be unmoved by his former friends in his current state which might spell trouble for the X-Men.

The artwork by Victor Ibanez is clean and detailed. Each panel aids in keeping the story fresh, interesting and a real page turner. This issue reads more like a TV show than a comic and the story seems to jump off of the page.

The writing by Jeff Lemire is solid. There is nothing cliched or wasted in any of the bubbles. This issue seems to push the story forward and keep the readers interested enough to wait anxiously for the next and final issue in this arc.

Overall I found this issue a real page turner. It was strong, cohesive and effective in pushing the story along. With the X-Men being such an old series it’s kind of refreshing to read new stories. It’s a nice addition to the universe without being contrived or appearing like a trick to keep readers interested. It’s a solid issue in an interesting arc.

Review: Avengers #0

Avengers 0 CoverThe kickoff to the All-New Avengers line begins here, with new stories of the All-New, All-Different Avengers, Squadron Supreme, A-Force, New Avengers, Ultimates and Uncanny Avengers! Someone is carefully studying the movements of the Avengers and those in their orbit-but do they mean to harm, or help? Find out the first clues in this special launch issue!

Avengers #0 totally caught me off guard, as the comic has much more in common with a Marvel Point One comic (one is out this week) than a “zero” issue. If anything you can call this “All-New, All-Different Avengers Point One” to get a sense of what’s inside. That’s not a bad thing in this case.

This issue lays the groundwork, so it seems, with the Squadron Supreme acting as the center of the various teases of the new Avengers teams and comics. What’s really interesting though is that the comic sets up conflict, a lot of it, as the Squadron Supreme is presented as sizing up and gathering information on the various Avengers incarnations.

This is pretty cool in that it sets the status-quo for us to quickly find out why each of these Avengers team are different, and what sets them apart from each other. It’s intelligent storytelling and also a subtle advertisement for the half-dozen series that’ll make up the core of this line of comics.

Some of it is familiar, and some of it is completely new… Captain Marvel and Alpha Flight!? But, it comes off as setting up the various new series as exciting and a grand adventure.

The comic does its job in teaching us about the other series, it sets the tone nicely. It got me excited for the new line of comics. It got me to understand the difference between the various teams. It also set up what looks like some coming conflict…. Squadron Supreme looks as awesome as I was expecting it to.

Overall, the comic is solid, and the reason I gave this a “buy” as opposed to the other Point One out this week is that this one looks like it really is the beginning of a greater story as opposed to just teasing a bunch. Not a bad start, not bad at all.

The Goddess of Thunder Reigns Supreme in July’s Storm #1!

This May, the heart and soul of the X-Men flies solo for the first time in Storm #1, a brand new ongoing series from New York Times Bestselling writer Greg Pak and fan-favorite artist Victor Ibanez!

From a thief on the streets of Cairo to the Headmistress of the Jean Grey School to the Queen of Wakanda and everything in between, Ororo Monroe has always defied a single title. Her desire to better the world was never limited to just her own kind. On a mission to foster goodwill and safeguard her fellow mutants in her own way, Storm will embark on a new journey.

In an interview with Marvel, Greg Pak said:

If you tell Storm she can’t go somewhere, that’s exactly where she’s going to go. She’s got an incredibly strong sense of justice and empathy earned through years of hard experience. And her empathy isn’t limited to whatever group she’s standing with at the moment. Storm will do the right thing–as she sees it–without apology. That’s incredibly strong–and potentially very costly for her.

Storm #1 marks the very first ongoing series for the character and joins a number of critically acclaimed new solo series featuring female leads as a part of the All-New Marvel NOW! initiative.

You cannot stop a force of nature. She is Storm, a hero with no equal…and the skies will tremble at the sight of their namesake! Get swept up this July!

Review: Captain Midnight #0

CapMidnight0Bermuda Triangle time-displacement, a really long-lost love, a treasure map, an evil Nazi technology company, and a super war-hero from the past! Captain Midnight #0 is sheer awesome, a reboot of the adventure hero’s stories originally broadcast on radio from 1938 to 1949. I’ll admit that I’m new to the character, but doing my research I looks as though Midnight has cast his Nazi-busting shadow across radio, comics, television, and pulp prose. You can still find the Captain Midnight Radio series here.

But more to the point, Captain Midnight #0 is a preview to what’s to come, and it’s expertly written by Joshua Williamson to feel a lot like a more daring, more dashing, (should I say it?!) more kick-ass version of Indiana Jones. Williamson plays easily into the archetypes of the U.S. military present today in our fictional media, with military agents who refuse to believe Midnight’s identity and a lowly soldier who’s somehow more knowledgeable about Captain Midnight’s ‘legend’ then anyone else in the fleet.

Krakoom! (my favorite comic book onomatopoeia) and Midnight bursts out of a time hole and into our modern day, and the story that follows is brought to life such that I felt like I was reading a Golden Age comic with sharper lines, deeper colors, and an attention to background panel detail that characterizes contemporary mainstream comics.

Unfortunately, Captain Midnight is at odds with the military (I don’t think supers have a lot of luck with the U.S. military…) and goes out on his own to find the evil Nazi, who you know has an extra-cheesy name like, oh, Fury Sharks!

I really didn’t know what I was getting myself into when I cracked open Captain Midnight #0, but now I’m aching to get my hands on the next issue and watch as Dark Horse’s talented artists and writer bring this Golden Age bad-ass back to life.
