Review: Blood and Dust #1

ALTERNATE Issue 1 Cover copyJudd Glenny is the first American vampire, once he terrorized the West as its most fearsome predator, but for more than 40 years now he’s spent his days in peace, reduced to little more than babysitter for his own vampire offspring. But when the evil that lives in the swamp surrounding the small backwater town he calls home gets ahold of one of Judd’s great grand-kids, everything changes.

Blood and Dust #1 is a Southern style vampire tale with a slight shot old B science fiction movies. While the premiere issue is a little slow, it is all the better for it. Writers Michael R. Martin and Adam J. Orndorf manage to bring in Judd’s violent history to light, as one his grand-kids go missing.

While there is this odd Southern Gothic feel to the art style, the comic is bolstered by the dark atmosphere of the issue. There is a clear absent of lightness in either story or art (so far). Judd’s vampiric transformation is only seen in one panel, but it brings on a clear physical change and something I look forward to seeing more of.

Review: Heroes: Godsend #5

HeroesComic_Godsend5_Cover_AFarah prepares for a deadly confrontation with the super-strong Mr Vance in the shocking conclusion to ‘Godsend’. And what part will Angela Petrelli, HRG and the mysterious Philomena Haas play?

While Heroes: Godsend #5 is well done, the end leaves you with some questions. Despite the fact that Farah manages to save her neighborhood from destruction, she still seems conflicted some about life. It’s almost as if they are leaving it there to make another Heroes prelude comic that ties into Farah’s life.

I will admit the one out of place transformation will likely shock readers. That’s especially given both characters have been in almost every issue, but didn’t seem that connected.

The ending between Farah, and the large suited man is fluid and well done. The comic as a whole presents a nice mix of dialogue and action.

Review: Heroes: Godsend #3

01 HeroesGodsend3_CoverAFarah has a mission: to break someone out from a maximum security prison – and that someone is a familiar face to Heroes fans… Plus, we continue to learn Farah’s origins as she is put through more training challenges – this time, she has to face a whole host of poisonous spiders…

Between the flashbacks, the prison breakout, and a restaurant fire there is a great amount of action crammed into the 29 pages of Heroes: Godsend #3. Extending the grit, and realism of Heroes Reborn, the story follows Farah and Mr Linderman. While Mr Linderman only appears briefly, there seems to be a small connection with a mysterious Mr. Vance.

Artist Roy Allan Martinez adds a sense of realism to Mr Linerman, by managing to capture the look of Malcom McDowell who played the character in Heroes. The flashback of how Farah got her Godsend scar is intriguing, and reveals some of why her character is so strong. Even though it may scare some readers who have arachnophobia, so be warned. The blend of Farah’s state of invisibility, and solid form is a well executed piece of art within itself.
