Don McGregor Returns To Zorro in “Flights!”

Veteran comic book scribe Don McGregor – the man who breathed four-color life into Marvel Comics’ Black Panther and Killraven, among others; DC Comics’ Nathaniel Dusk; as well as his own Detectives, Inc. and Sabre – joins the ranks of American Mythology Productions with his long-awaited return to “The Fox” with Zorro: Flights

Making his start in comicdom writing stories for the legendary Warren Publishing, he moved on to Marvel Comics in 1972 as a proofreader before establishing himself as a writer and editor. He also wrote Batman and other characters at the Distinguished Competition, and is well-known for his renowned work on Zorro for Topps Comics and Papercutz, respectively.

With this three-issue limited series featuring art by Vincenzo Carratu and Claudio Avella, McGregor sets Zorro on an adventure for the first time in 15 years by bringing him face to face with a fire-breathing dragon. But something doesn’t seem right. Although the creature soars in the air-breathing fire and fury, it appears to be controlled by mere man.

As a bonus for fans and collectors everywhere, American Mythology will release the first chapter in this epic story with four covers. They include: the Main Cover by Roy Allan Martinez, the Variant Cover by Carratu, a Limited Edition Color Photo Cover, and the uber-rare “Century Edition” Black & White Photo Cover which is limited to just 100 printed.

Zorro Flights #1 features an on-sale date of August 25, 2021.

Red Sonja and Bettie Page Celebrate Halloween with a Pair of One-Shots

Savage Tales: A Red Sonja Halloween Special

Dynamite is delivering a fright-filled pair of Halloween themed special one-shots starring Red Sonja and Bettie Page!

In Savage Tales: A Red Sonja Halloween Special, writer Mark Russell brings in artist Jacob Edgar to tell an extra-length spooky story. Dearbhla Kelly and Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou also jump over from the regular series for this essential tale for fans of the She-Devil with a Sword. All underneath a striking cover from Erica D’Urso, drawing inspiration from the original Savage Tales #1.

This one-shot perfectly complements issue 9 of the ongoing series, out the same month. While that issue has Sonja returning to the Sorcerers of Wigur-Nomadene, Savage Tales flashes back to their first encounter. At this point, Sonja is not yet a legend, but a brute full of anger and ambition. Savage. Everyone’s favorite fiery heroine tries to convince the sorcerers to bring her family and friends back to life.

In the Bettie Page Halloween Special, a mysterious force is hunting students at an exclusive Upstate New York college. Just the case for Bettie to investigate, and she’ll be enrolling in Werewolf 101. The supermodel/superspy’s chronicler David Avallone contributes this full-length story with artist Roy Allan Martinez. Bettie is used to men being beasts, so this issue turns that metaphor up to 11. In a bonus short story, writer Erica Schultz and artist Fernando Ruiz spin a yarn of aliens, classic cars and a sci-fi double feature at the drive-in theater.

The issue features a cover by fan-favorite Bettie artist John Royle and another from Reilly Brown. Last year’s Halloween Special was a bucket of fun and kicked off the whole next era of Bettie’s adventures, so fans shouldn’t dare miss this one!

Savage Tales: A Red Sonja Halloween Special and the Bettie Page Halloween Special are slated for release in October 2019.

Review: Blood & Dust: The Life & Undeath of Judd Glenny #3

blood_and_dust_3-digital-1Ruth Glenny has been chained up in the attic for years after the last killing spree she went on when free. But now with their Grandpa and brother trapped by the thing in the swamp, Zeke and Baby Hazel have no choice but to unleash their mother and hope that she’ll stay sane long enough to save their family.

There seems to be a clear difference between Ruth, and his daughter in Blood & Dust: The Life & Undeath of Judd Glenny #3. Ruth seems to more control of his violent nature, unlike his daughter who doesn’t. That makes this issue a little different than the previous two and shows writers Michael R. Martin and Adam Orodorf can shake things up and keep writers on our toes. I’m curious to see how Ruth stops his own daughter, now that her monstrous half is in control.

The obvious artistic change by Roy Allan Martinez is Ruth’s daughter. Changing in an almost Jekyll and Hyde manner, from a prisoner to a monster. Outside of that, the art is superb. Especially, as the issue ends in flames as things go from bad to worse.

Brought to life by the illustrations of Roy Allan Martinez and colors of Raymund Lee, Blood & Dust pushes the boundaries of horror and explores dark places children shouldn’t be allowed to go…especially the swamp.

Review: Blood & Lust: The Life & Undeath of Judd Glenny #2

blood_and_dust_2-digital-140 years ago the first American vampire became the unlikely savior to the children of Boggy Depot and forged an unlikely agreement with the town. They leave him and his family alone, and he’ll save any children from whatever lives in the swamp. But now Judd needs saving, and his grandkids only hope is their mother. Only problem is she’s more dangerous than the swamp.

I’m really shocked the cover of Blood & Lust: The Life & Undeath of Judd Glenny #2 doesn’t say, guest starring the swamp creature. While the focus is on Judd trying to save his grandchildren there is a focus on the history between him and whatever lives in the swamp. Yet I’m curious as to what the swamp creature is since all it reveals is a being covered in vines and not much more.

Darkness seems to carry throughout the issue in both the art and the story. The team manages to show some of Judd’s life in a flashback sequence which fills some things in. The art manages to blend past and present in superb fashion. There’s little difference between them as both times lead to the swamp.

Review: Blood and Dust #1

ALTERNATE Issue 1 Cover copyJudd Glenny is the first American vampire, once he terrorized the West as its most fearsome predator, but for more than 40 years now he’s spent his days in peace, reduced to little more than babysitter for his own vampire offspring. But when the evil that lives in the swamp surrounding the small backwater town he calls home gets ahold of one of Judd’s great grand-kids, everything changes.

Blood and Dust #1 is a Southern style vampire tale with a slight shot old B science fiction movies. While the premiere issue is a little slow, it is all the better for it. Writers Michael R. Martin and Adam J. Orndorf manage to bring in Judd’s violent history to light, as one his grand-kids go missing.

While there is this odd Southern Gothic feel to the art style, the comic is bolstered by the dark atmosphere of the issue. There is a clear absent of lightness in either story or art (so far). Judd’s vampiric transformation is only seen in one panel, but it brings on a clear physical change and something I look forward to seeing more of.
