Baltimore Comic-Con 2015 Welcomes Kitchen, Moore, Root, and Veitch

The Baltimore Comic-Con returns to the Baltimore Convention Center on September 25–27, 2015 for its 16th annual show! The have announced returning guests, Denis Kitchen, Terry Moore, Budd Root, and Rick Veitch.

The Harvey Award-winning Denis Kitchen began his comics career as a self-published underground cartoonist (Mom’s Homemade Comics, 1969), but quickly became primarily a publisher. His Kitchen Sink Press for three decades published such legendary and diverse artists as Will Eisner, Harvey Kurtzman, R. Crumb, Mark Schultz, Charles Burns, Al Capp, Scott McCloud, Neil Gaiman, Alan Moore, Eddie Campbell, Dave McKean, Howard Cruse, and countless others. Kitchen also founded the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund and chaired it for eighteen years. A monograph of his cartoons, The Oddly Compelling Art of Denis Kitchen, was recently published. Kitchen curates exhibitions, is an art agent, a literary agent, a comics historian and author (The Art of Harvey Kurtzman and a biography, Al Capp), and has recently brought back Kitchen Sink Books as an imprint of Dark Horse Comics with partner John Lind. This is Denis’s 6th appearance at Baltimore Comic-Con where he has a special connection: as the representative of the Kurtzman estate, he was responsible for bringing the annual Harvey Awards to the convention.

Having decided to publish his initial work, Strangers in Paradise, via his Houston-based Abstract Studios, Terry Moore won an Eisner award for his work. Since then, he has gone on to write several titles for Marvel, including the hit series Runaways. Through Abstract Studios, he created the Harvey award-winning Echo, which ran for 30 issues and has since been collected, and his current title, the Harvey-nominated Rachel Rising, for which Moore both writes and provides the art.

Budd Root initially broke into the mainstream comics industry with his first published work at London Night Studios. Ultimately, Root decided he would publish his own comics, forming Basement Comics in 1993 and issuing the now-synonymous Cavewoman. The title has since gone on to see publication with Caliber Press and Avatar Press. It has also garnered an Ignatz Award nomination in 1999.

A member of The Kubert School’s first graduating class, Rick Veitch made a name early in his career as a fantasy artist and writer for Marvel’s Epic line of titles, where he worked on Epic Illustrated, Heartburst, and The One. He went on to work on the critically acclaimed Swamp Thing from DC Comics, as well as Miracleman from Eclipse Comics, for which he both wrote and provided art. Veitch then moved into the indie comics scene, working initially on Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles from Mirage Studios and then launching his own King Hell publishing house, with titles like Bratpack and The Maximortal. Returning to larger publishers, Veitch has worked on Image’s 1963 and Supreme, and DC’s Tomorrow Stories, America’s Best Comics, The Question, and Aquaman. More recently, he wrote the Vertigo title Army@Love and The Big Lie from Image. You can find his Miracleman work reprinted these days from Marvel Comics.

Baltimore Comic Con 2014: Kickoff the convention with All-Star Reception!

The 2014 All-Star Baltimore Comic-Con Reception will take place on Friday, September 5 at 8:00 pm, and Baltimore Comic Con is hosting an an all-star lineup of special comics guests! Join them for this intimate evening, which is unlike anything else the rest of the weekend has to offer! On Friday through Sunday, thousands of comic book fans will be meeting these creators in the hall. Ticket holders to THIS event will be able to enjoy the company of these creators in a cocktail party setting.

Guests for the night so far include Christina Blanch, Mark Buckingham, Alan Davis, Dave Gibbons, Barry Kitson, John Totleben, Rick Veitch, Brennan Wagner, Matt Wagner, Mark Waid, and Bill Willingham. Join the convention and their special guests as they welcome you to the 2014 Baltimore Comic-Con.

The exclusive event will be held at a 4-star hotel adjacent to the convention center, high atop the city of Baltimore with a wonderful view of Inner Harbor.

Review – The Big Lie

As if to capitalize on the 10th anniversary of the tragedy of September 11th, Image Comics releases The Big Lie, written by Rick Veitch. The comic starts off as an attempt by a woman in the future to travel back in time and save her husband who died during the terrorist attack. While explaining the attacks, the people she attempts to convince rattle off “Truther” beliefs and pokes holes in her story. There’s a reason this is also called “The Truther Comic.”

A lab tech travels back in time on the morning of Sept. 11, 2001 to try and get her husband out of the world trade center before it falls, but will the facts convince him before it’s too late? A riveting tale of 9/11 by award winning master storyteller RICK VEITCH that exposes ‘The Big Lie!’

It’d be one thing if the comic focused on one person’s loss during the tragedy, but the fact that it questions the events spinning it into one big giant conspiracy comes off as insensitive and exploitative during this anniversary. Even by the end of the story, the lab tech who starts off with such strong beliefs as to what happened, questions them, which shows her as a pretty weak minded individual. And even in all of the theories it throws out, it doesn’t go too much in depth into them, instead skimming each one without exploring whether it’s plausible. It goes so far as to include the theory that this was an inside job to be used as an excuse for Neo-Cons to expand American Imperialism.

The day was a tragedy, no matter what you believe the truth might be. On the 10th anniversary of it, we need to focus on those lost to terrorism and what’s come since. We were all changed, especially those who lost a loved one and this comic’s release doesn’t feel like it attempts to ask questions about the event, but throw out conspiracies without exploration of them, which feels half-assed and disgraces the memory of those lost. Instead of a reflection, we’re left with profiteering on a tragedy an act it accuses the Bush administration of doing itself. The Big Lie to me feels like a big insult.

It intelligently explains and teaches economic issues and satirizes the current economic and political state. This is humor as smart and biting as anything you’d find on The Daily Show or Colbert Report.

The story is brilliant with perfect jabs at the various forces that exist and affect today’s economy. The best of all, it provides political commentary without shoving it all down your throat.

There’s some minor issues in the graphic novel doesn’t go too deep into some of those economic forces to really explain what they are (Glass Steagall being the one that really sticks out), but this should be enough to get folks to want to find out what they are themselves.

This is perfect satire that’s aimed at folks who let the rich get richer and don’t do anything about it. There’s educational materials that make you think, all wrapped up in entertainment.

I wish all of politics was this much fun. This should be required reading for everyone to open their eyes and get them to really think about what’s happened the last 30 years to get us where we are.
