Z2 Comics Presents: Making Music in Graphic Novels
Saturday, October 5
7:45 pm-8:45 pm Room 1A24
What is a graphic album? Z2 Comics, in working with the likes of Dan Auerbach of The Black Keys, Japanese kawaii-metal phenomenons BABYMETAL, Black Veil Brides frontman Andy Beirsack and pop-internet enigma Poppy have pioneered the marriage of comics with music. The pairing of some of the finest talents in comics with groundbreaking and legendary musicians has led to a rich, immersive experience that pushes the possibilities of what both comics and music can do.

The overused term, “rules are made to be broken,” has been said repeatedly when it is thought that someone has gone against convention. As the world slowly embraces the diversity that surrounds it, so has popular media. Comics have always challenged type but has mostly been monochromatic. It has only recently been proactive about being diverse in not only race and sexuality, but also ability. Wave Blue World‘s Broken Frontier offers up stories where they do just that, break the rules.
Like most kids growing up, I loved watching cartoons, I watched before I went to school and when I came back from school. I watched the requisite cartoons most kids did, such as the Warner Brothers staple, Looney Tunes. I also watched the cartoons specifically made for the kid who bought toys like GI Joe and MASK. One of the few cartoon studios, that pretty much showed me that the full range of emotions can be packed into a cartoon, were the ones done by Disney.
Fantagraphics Books Inc. has announced the arrival of Now, a tri-annual anthology series with all new stories that highlights the diversity and talent of cartoonists all over the globe. The first issue is set to debut at the Small Press Expo (SPX) in Bethesda, MD and will arrive in comic shops and bookstores
