Mike Richardson and Scott Allie Both Issue Statements

Early today we ran an article about the repeated unacceptable repeated behavior concerning Scott Allie. Since our piece ran both Allie, and Dark Horse‘s Founder Mike Richardson have issued statements.

Here’s Allie’s statement which was issued to another site:

I’m deeply sorry about my behavior at San Diego Comic Con 2015 and I apologize to everyone I’ve hurt. I’m completely embarrassed by my actions and how my behavior reflects on Dark Horse Comics, my friends and family. My personal approach and decisions for managing stress were bad. Dark Horse and I have taken the matter very seriously and since this incident, we have taken steps to correct and to avoid any behavior like this in the future. Although apologies can’t undo what has happened, I’ve tried to apologize to everyone impacted by my behavior. To my family, friends, co-workers, and to the industry — please know that I am truly, truly sorry.

Allie has also said he has apologized to Harris and is seeking outside help for substance abuse. We wish Allie well on his recovery and do wish him the best.

Below is Richardson’s full statement:

I applaud Ms. Asselin’s Intentions in dealing with sexual harassment in the comics industry.

I also want to make one thing very clear: Dark Horse as a company, and myself as an individual, take the kinds of inexcusable incidents reported by Ms. Asselin very seriously—doubly so when it involves one of our employees. In cases such as these, we have been proactive in our response, with a variety of professional services involved, all with the goal of changing behavior. Additionally, a number of internal responses are acted upon, including termination if such behavior continues. Under no circumstance is any individual “harbored.” In this particular case, action was taken immediately, though we did not, and cannot, perform a public flogging, as some might wish.

Secondly, there is no “us-against-them” attitude here. I have an open door policy and every employee, no matter where she/he sits in the company, is invited to come in to my office with any complaint or observation, at any time. I restate this policy constantly. I won’t go into the assumptions made here that are just untrue, because my intent is not to undermine the purpose of her piece, but no one here has ever turned a “blind eye” to these behaviors, not in this case, not in any case. With regard to sexual harassment, it is simply not tolerated. Dark Horse agrees 100% with the EEOC Guidelines.

Ms. Asselin turns her eye toward me. I have never met or talked with Ms. Asselin. If she knew me, she would learn that I am extremely sensitive on this subject, being the father of three daughters and having experienced first hand the effects of sexual harassment and gender discrimination. I have fought against that harassment, not just in a social environment, but also within our own publishing schedule. I have also fought for gender equality in our school system and championed social and racial diversity both in and out of Dark Horse, activities I am still involved with. Her assumption that my longevity somehow “embeds” within me an attitude of inappropriate permissiveness is not only wrong, it is insulting.

I agree that harassment of any kind, routine or not, is unacceptable. It always has been. We at Dark Horse will renew our efforts to make sure that our company is never again mentioned with regard to this type of occurrence. As quoted in the article, our goal has always been to provide a positive, safe, and respectful environment for its employees, creators, and fans.

– Mike Richardson

We support Dark Horse’s renewed efforts and their goal of providing a safe, and respectful environment for its employees, creators, and fans.

Review: Father’s Day #1

fd 001Father’s Day tells the story of a man on the run and a lost long lost daughter that is trying to find him.  While the story opens with a bang and finishes with one, there is little going on in the middle.  For those familiar with comics as a medium, they are likely to see parallels here with a more famous entry, A History of ViolenceA History of Violence (later made into a movie) tells a similar story of a man on the hideout from a violent past, who is once again thrown back into his old life by events outside of his control.

Father’s Day is similar in a lot of ways to this story, at least on the surface and the unique aspects of the story, at least from the first issue seem mostly superficial.  Instead of a blue collar father with a loving family, this is a man on the run whose daughter discovers him, and it is the daughter where any originality in this story might come.  Unfortunately for the story the daughter comes off as mostly two dimensional and although she is portrayed as edgy, it doesn’t really come through for the character either.  The resulting tension between father and daughter is therefore more of an afterthought to the two of them being chased by random mob hitmen.  As with the case of other series, it is therefore likely the same with this one that while it offers this story over four issues, it might have been better to go for more and to build up the characters first as opposed to this story we were immediately demanded to care about the father and daughter that we know almost nothing about.

In a sense there is nothing really wrong with this story, but at the same time it lacking in both originality for its content and in the approachability of the characters.  There is some promise here, as with such randomly presented characters, that indeed something could come of this by the second issue, but equally there is probably not enough of a hook here for the first issue to draw in the readers for another try.

Review: Deep Gravity #1

deep gravity #1 coverHe didn’t get onto the most lucrative interstellar mission for the money—Paxon wants to be reunited with the woman he loves. But his high-stakes journey takes him to a savage world full of the galaxy’s most dangerous game, where the gravity can turn your bones to powder.

I’m much more of a sci-fi person than a fantasy person, so getting my hands on the start of a new series, I’m always a bit excited to see what it brings to the table. Deep Gravity #1 by Mike Richardson, Gabriel Hardman, Corinna Bechko, with art by Fernando Baldó, is familiar, but there’s just enough that’s new and different to get me to want to come back for more.

The familiar part is an alien world that a company has gotten rights to mine/explore/grab resources from/etc. That’s been done many times before, and many times well. Here are the tiny details. As the title hints at, the gravity on this world is different, much greater than that of Earth. Add in radiation, and the amount of time someone can stay on the planet is limited. With a new crew coming on planet, and old crew leaving, you can see where its all going. Add in the relationship angle and there’s a lot that we’ve seen before in other stories. But, again, its the small details that matter here, and those are entertaining and new.

But how its put together is interesting. Much of the writing reminds me of Hardman and Bechko’s previous work, like their Planet of the Apes run. They have a certain style to what they bring to the page. That’s not good or bad, but if you’ve enjoyed their previous work, there’s familiarity here that’ll get you to probably enjoy this new series as well. The two plus Richardson, have dreamed up an interesting world that we learn about as the main character Paxon does. That leads to some exciting moments that catch him and us off guard. Going forward, that discovery will likely be the strength of the series.

Artist Fernando Baldó brings us a solid style. It’s not too flashy or fancy, and definitely doesn’t jump out to me, but it’s solid work with some nice design for the alien world and space ship. It gets the job done and there’s some nice touches.

Overall, while the first issue might seem familiar, and “been there,” there’s a lot new and some great potential going forward. I’m pretty sure I know what to expect next, but even so, if the rest is as entertaining as this first issue, we’ll have a solid sci-fi read to finish off the summer and take us into the fall.

Dark Horse Proudly Presents Andrew Vachss Underground!

Dark_Horse_Comics_logoAcclaimed author Andrew Vachss hits home with an unapologetic approach guaranteed to leave readers with plenty to think about. From the hard-boiled crime and suspense of the anthology series, Hard Looks, to the powerful and poignant Another Chance to Get it Right: A Children’s Book for Adults, his work continues to challenge the norms of prose.

Dark Horse is proud to present Underground, a work of “speculative fiction” with a clear connection to current events…particularly how such events are presented in the media. Based on the script of the same name by Andrew Vachss, the book is adapted by Chet Wiliamson and Mike Richardson, with art by Dominic Reardon!

When all sources of “news” are so clearly biased that none can be considered even remotely trustworthy or reliable, there is no news . . . and “The Terror” descends. For decades, The Rulers have been using prisoner and slave labor to construct Underground, confident that all those who flee there will willingly trade their freedom for security. Now, “truth” is what the Rulers say it is, and The Rulers rule all aspects of the human existence. But even within this antiseptically evil world, a revolutionary movement is brewing. A new breed of journalists— “The Book Boys”—risk everything to graffiti the truth on Underground’s pristine walls. The intolerable act of creating a reliable source of truth––“If it’s written in blue, it must be true.”––is against The Rules ––a huge bounty has been offered for identification or capture of any of this crew.

This original graphic novelwill challenge readers to reexamine the way the media governs their own lives, in print, on air and online, with a chilling account of willingly-accepted oppression and individual autonomy for the comfort of fascism! Underground  is a new genre: the Graphic Novel presented as a visual Movie, adapted from the original screenplay of Andrew Vachss by Mike Richardson and noted author Chet Williamson.

Find the truth––and what it costs to those who dare to disseminate––it at finer comic shops everywhere on October 29 in a beautiful hardcover edition of Underground priced at $29.99!
