This oversized WWE special highlights everything we love about the Thanksgiving tradition that rules autumn in sports entertainment—Survivor Series!

Review: WWE #6

Dean and Sasha’s Epic Road Trip between cities on the road to Money in the Bank continues and the creative team of Dennis Hopeless, Serg Acuña, Doug Garbark, and Jim Campbell are back and delivering once more. This time, we spend a little less time in the ring and a little more time on the road. We get a glimpse into what a Superstar does on their days off. Or, well, at least within the fabric of the ever-sprawling story of WWE.

Without giving about too much away, this issue gives us a deeper look into what Dean Ambrose likes to do when he’s not in the ring as well as a little of what Sasha Banks likes to do to unwind. If you follow them on Twitter or Instagram or even watch Dean on Total Divas, you know that this isn’t exactly the truth but a construction of kayfabe that makes perfect sense in context. Dean and Sasha’s downtime escapes are exactly what you’d expect from their characters.

Hopeless’ writing paired with the expressions of Acuña and the mood set by Garbark and Campbell really sells this sharing of pastimes on the road. The ending is one that definitely has my interest piqued for what comes next.

If you haven’t already read the interview with writer Dennis Hopeless from earlier this week, definitely go check it out. There’s some more insight on the ongoing series straight from one of the sources.

The backfill this time around is a short about John Cena called “Ten” by writer Mairghread Scott, illustrator Max Raynor, and colorist Jeremy Lawson. While Cena’s recent story has never been terribly interesting to me, this frames it in such a way that I’d be willing to give things a second look. And that is something important in storytelling.

Overall, I still really enjoy this ongoing and the story presented and I’m, as always, looking forward to the next issue. And, I’ll be honest: if I were to get a single variant cover ever, it would probably be the Finn Bálor one for this issue. Just saying.

Story: Dennis Hopeless, Mairghread Scott Art: Serg Acuna, Max Raynor
Color: Doug Garbark, Jeremy Lawson Letters: Jim Campbell
Story: 9.5 Art: 9.5 Overall: 9.5
Recommendation: Look, I can only say buy this so many times in a row…

Something “Smells like Teen Titans Spirit” when Raven judges a musical competition and Punk Rocket’s band threatens to shake the city to pieces! Then our heroes grow “Bored of the Dance” when Starfire’s plans for a Titans Prom go predictably well. As in, not well at all.

Review: Suicide Squad/Banana Splits Special #1

Tony Bedard gives us the mash up that we never saw coming, we get a shove back into the way back machine for this very special “Suicide Splits” comic. The Banana Splits are way before my time but, that doesn’t make this issue any less enjoyable to me. I was drawn in for the Suicide Squad and stayed for the animal rescue team that Amanda Waller provided to help the Squad out of a jam. It’s all fun and games until there’s an ambush in a Forrest and some rogue robot factory.

Ben Caldwell‘s penciling and Mark Morales’ ink work provide the perfect jump off point for Jeremy Lawson‘s insane color palette. There’s darkness when there needs to be, a little bit of Reservoir Dog stylization and some seriously fun pop color, cartoon-like artwork for the Squad. The artwork is exactly what you need it to be for a story that isn’t taking itself too seriously. There’s also so killer detail on the Banana Splits making them appear to be the prominent drivers of the story.

The story is just fun and considering the previous issues of the Suicide Squad comics have been tense and violent up until thus point, a little bit of fun is exactly what us readers needed. There’s not a lot going in that adds to the Squads universe as a whole, thus us just a fun romp through silly town that gives the reader some action and comic relief. It’s well written, well executed and interesting enough without being too silly to take seriously. It’s an unlikely crossover comic that gives you a bit of the Squad without too much heart-wrenching darkness.

Suicide Splits is exactly what you’d expect and what your soul wants in your one off mash-up story. Well written, great art and a bit of a pulp all in one comic. Trading off of the Squads badassery and having them need a rescue from a pop band who hasn’t had a hit since before I was born is a cute touch that works well with the over the topness of the Squad.
