Ben Kahn is a comic book writer based in New York. Their latest series, Gryffen: galaxy’s Most Wanted, is their third collaboration with artist Bruno Hidalgo after Shaman and Heavenly Blues. Gryffen is a genderqueer, anti-fascist space opera published by SBI Press exclusively on ComiXology.

Heavenly Blues sees a ragtag group of deceased thieves condemned Hell team up to pull the ultimate heist on Heaven. Art also by Bruno Hidalgo.

John Arminio is a long-time comic book devotee and retailer who peddles his wares at Comix Connection in Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania. SDCC 2019: Warner Bros. Television Celebrates 50 Years of Comic-Con with 16 Fan-Favorite Series

Warner Bros. Television Group joins in the celebration of San Diego Comic-Con as it turns 50 this year, rolling out the red carpet in grand style for this historic milestone.

Stars and producers from 16 of the Studio’s fan-favorite series are scheduled to participate in Comic-Con International: San Diego from July 17–21. The 2019 edition of the world’s largest comic and pop culture festival will feature the final SDCC appearances of long-running hit WBTV series Arrow and Supernatural, as well as the world premiere screenings of highly anticipated DCTV series Batwoman and Pennyworth, plus the revival of Veronica Mars.

Warner Bros. Television highlights include:

  • Farewell to Arrow and Supernatural: Fans attending Comic-Con will have their last chance to celebrate long-running hit series Arrow and Supernatural as they make their final appearances at SDCC: Arrow on Saturday in Ballroom 20 and Supernatural in its traditional Sunday slot in Hall H
  • Preview Night/World Premieres of Batwoman, Pennyworth and More: SDCC will be the place for world premiere screenings of the Arrow-verse’s newest DC Super Hero drama Batwoman (in advance of its Sunday, October 6, premiere at 8/7c on The CW) and DC origin story Pennyworth (prior to its Sunday, July 28, debut at 10/9c on EPIX) on preview night, Wednesday, July 17. WBTVG will also feature an advance sneak peek of the pilot episode for the highly anticipated FOX dramatic thriller Prodigal Son, starring Tom Payne and Michael Sheen. Doom Patrol reimagines one of DC’s most beloved groups of Super Heroes: Robotman aka Cliff Steele (Brendan Fraser), Negative Man aka Larry Trainor (Matt Bomer), Elasti-Woman aka Rita Farr (April Bowlby) and Crazy Jane (Diane Guerrero), led by modern-day mad scientist Niles Caulder aka The Chief (Timothy Dalton).

Each member of the Doom Patrol suffered a horrible accident that gave them superhuman abilities but also left them scarred and disfigured. Traumatized and downtrodden, the team found their purpose through The Chief, coming together to investigate the weirdest phenomena in existence. Following the mysterious disappearance of The Chief these reluctant heroes will find themselves in a place they never expected to be, called to action by none other than Cyborg (Joivan Wade), who comes to them with a mission hard to refuse.

Part support group, part Super Hero team, the Doom Patrol is a band of superpowered freaks who fight for a world that wants nothing to do with them.

The series is based on DC characters originally written and drawn by Arnold Drake, Bob Haney, and Bruno Premiani.

DC’s Young Animal Returns with More Doom Patrol, New Series Collapser, and a Green Lantern!?

DC’s Young Animal is returning this July with the next chapter of its flagship title, plus two new, innovative stories. The pop-up imprint curated by My Chemical Romance front man Gerard Way will kick things off on July 3 with Doom Patrol: Weight of the Worlds, followed by Collapser on July 17, and Far Sector in late 2019.

With these new series come new creative teams, with Mikey Way (MCR), Shaun Simon (Neverboy, Killjoys) and acclaimed artist Ilias Kyriazis (G.I. Joe: First Strike) introducing Collapser, and author N.K. Jemisin (The Broken Earth, Inheritance trilogies) making her comic book writing debut with Far Sector, a new and original Green Lantern story, alongside Jamal Campbell, artist of the breakout hit series, Naomi. The next phase of Gerard Way’s Doom Patrol will team him up once again with Nick Derington for covers, with interior stories illustrated by a series of amazing artists beginning with James Harvey, followed by Doc Shaner, Nick Pitarra, Becky Cloonan and more.

DC‘s new high concept streaming TV series is based on the cult classic comics. The show is exclusively available on DC’s streaming platform DC Universe. Is the show good? TV Review: Doom Patrol S1E1 Pilot

In the series premiere, the reluctant heroes of the Doom Patrol – Robotman, Negative Man, Elasti-Woman and Crazy Jane face the threat of Mr. Nobody, who’s after The Chief.

There’s a lot of television shows on the air based on comic books. While some feel a bit too similar to each other or lack that special something to stand out, there’s some that not only stand out but bring something new. Doom Patrol, the latest live action series for DC Universe, is that example of something a bit different.

Unapologetically adult the first episode introduces us to the team of Crazy Jane (Diane Guerrero), Elasti Girl/Rita Farr (April Bowlby), Negative Man/Larry Trainor (Matt Bomer), Cliff Steele/Robotman (Brendan Fraser), and their leader the Chief (Timothy Dalton). Most are unlikeable if downright horrible people.

The episode teases it all out as it slowly familiarizes us with the world and characters. Some of what’s revealed is tragic, some of it will elicit anger. What it does is deliver characters who have some depth and rather interesting. What Doom Patrol does first is introduce us to fuck-ups first who eventually become heroes instead of giving us heroes who we later learn their flaws.

The show embraces its quirky material with some changes, one absolutely for the better. It knows it’s odd and rolls with it in look, pacing, and presentation. The entire episode is narrated with a sense of humor about it that keeps what otherwise is a rather slow start entertaining. The performances are good as each actor embraces the fact their characters are dicks. There’s nudity, there’s swearing, again, this is an adult show that’s more about each character adjusting to their life and embracing who they are.

The threat is rather vague. Moments are weird. Some of the FX is rather dodgy. But, there’s something about this show. Its quirky sense of self and embracing who the intended audience is makes it stand out from the sea of choices.

The first episode isn’t exciting but the performances, character introductions, and a sly sense of humor come together for a package that’s worth the hour to watch.
