Where the Data Ranks 2016’s Comic Book Films

Over the weekend there was some chatter as to which films were the highest grossing of 2016 and who won, Marvel or DC? The answers aren’t so simple and black and white, which is why I like to turn to data to give actual rankings as to who were winners and losers.

So far this year, seven films have been released based on comic books (counting Batman: The Killing Joke). This feature will be weekly until the end of the year, as some films are still in the box-office and there’s till more to come.

Here’s where this year’s movie crop stands as far as the actual numbers:

Total Domestic Gross: $1.625 billion
Total International Gross: $2.606 billion
Worldwide Gross: $4.231 billion
Total Reported Budgets: $1.050 billion
Total “Profit”: $3.182 billion

Average Domestic Gross: $232,191, 655
Average International Gross: $434,288,353
Average: Worldwide Gross: $604,438,814
Average Budget: $149,928,571
Average Profit: $454,510,243

Now that we have those numbers down we can get a better idea as to how films have actually done this year. Below are various rankings of where films stand so far and if the films are above average (green) or below average (red):

films domestic 8.29.16

films international 8.29.16

films worldwide 8.29.16

films profit 8.29.16

Angry Birds Knock Out Captain America: Civil War From First

Angry-Birds-final-quadThe Angry Birds Movie was top of the box office earning an estimated $39 million. That was more than enough to put the movie in first place. The film also earned $112 million in foreign markets to bring its total to $151 million. With a budget of $73 million, the animated film looks to be very profitable for Sony.

It bumped off Captain America: Civil War which dropped to second in its third week. The film earned $33.1 million. That had the film dropping a bit more than expected. The film has earned $347.4 million domestically and $706.1 million in foreign markets to bring its total to $1.053 billion. That makes it the first film of 2016 to cross the billion dollar mark.

Also opening this past weekend was Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising which came in third with $21.8 million. The film also earned $30 million in foreign markets to bring its total to $51.8 million. The domestic total is over 55% less than the original, and can only be considered a disappointment because of that. Also new was The Nice Guys which came in fourth and earned $11.3 million.

That dropped The Jungle Book to fifth with $11 million to bring its domestic total to $327.5 million and worldwide total to $857.7 million.

While Batman v Superman looks to be out of the theaters (though still gained some money over the week days), Deadpool added $120,000 to its domestic total and now stands at $763.1 million worldwide.

Next weekend sees the opening of X-Men: Apocalypse, but the film opened in foreign markets this past weekend. It debuted in 75 markets and brought in $103.3 million. Out of the 75 markets, the film was first place in 71 of them and had the largest opening for Fox in six of them. The opening number bests X-Men: Days of Future Past when you look at the same markets and factor in exchange rates. That film earned $100 million in the same markets. The film opens domestically this coming weekend, but faces tough competition with Disney’s Alice Through the Looking Glass.

Captain America: Civil War Repeats, While Marvel Crosses $10 Billion

Captain America Civil WarCaptain America: Civil War sat at the top of the box office again with an estimated $72.6 million. That’s about a 59% drop which is similar to Avengers: Age of Ultron. So far the film has earned $295.9 million domestically. The film also earned $84.2 million making its international earnings an even $645 million. That puts it at $940.9 million worldwide and currently sitting in second behind Zootopia for the top earner of 2016. The film will easily pass $1 billion making it the first film in 2016 to do so.

Captain America: Civil War‘s performance along with the other films comprising the 13 films of the Marvel Cinematic Universe has pushed Marvel to having earned over $10 billion worldwide.

In second place was The Jungle Book which earned an estimated $17.8 million in its fifth week. Following that were two new films Money Monster which earned an estimated $15 million and The Darkness which earned $5.2 million.

In other comic film news, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice was #14 earning $535,500 to bring its domestic total to $328.2 million and worldwide total to $868.8 million.

Even though it’s out on DVD and digital Deadpool added $200,000 to its total to bring its domestic total to $362.5 million and worldwide to $762.4 million.

This coming week should be interesting as X-Men: Apocalypse opens internationally (except for China and Japan) and Neighbors 2 opens domestically.
