Graphic Policy’s Top Comic Picks this Week!

Wednesdays are new comic book day! Each week hundreds of comics are released, and that can be pretty daunting to go over and choose what to buy. That’s where we come in!

Each week our contributors are choosing up to five books and why they’re choosing the books. In other words, this is what we’re looking forward to and think you should be taking a look!

Find out what folks think below, and what comics you should be looking out for this Wednesday.

Alex

Top Pick(s): Bloodshot Salvation #1 and Secret Weapons #4 (Valiant Entertainment) –  There’s a funny thing this week. There’s really only two comics I can’t wait to pick up from my LCS, and both are from Valiant: Bloodshot: Salvation #1 and Secret Weapons #4. While I’ve read both, I want to reread them both in print without the review copy watermark on them.

Mr. Crypt #1 (Alterna) – It’s a living skeleton and the comic is about $1.50. What’s not to love?

Paul

Top Pick: Jean Grey #7 (Marvel) – I’ve really been enjoying this series and seeing Jean meeting up with other heroes and learning from them has been fun. But to be totally honest, I’m really just looking forward to seeing Scarlet Witch in this issue. Not too much of a fan boy, eh?

Super Sons #8 (DC Comics) – This is a fun, action filled super hero book that you all should be reading.

U.S.Avengers #10 (Marvel) – I’m interested to see how the fall of Hydra will effect this team, and looking forward to them going out to look for Cannonball. This book is hit or miss with me, and the Secret Empire tie ins were just alright, so I’m hoping things pick up.

X-Men Gold #12 (Marvel) – This book has been a good read, even though I do have a few issues on how some characters have been depicted or altogether pushed to the side (looking at Storm). I would like to see this book be more of a team feel like the first few issues were; lately is just feels like ‘the tales of Shadowcat and Colossus’ with the rest of the team just popping up as support.

Shay

Batwoman #7 (DC Comics) – Kate and her dad spend some time stranded in the first installment of the Fear and Loathing story arc.

Harley Quinn #28 (DC Comics) – Harley’s running for office. An anti-heroine for the people!

Harley Quinn Batman Day Special (DC Comics) – I’m all for anything Harley related especially when we get to see her toxic relationship fable with Joker. Here’s to hoping that she stays smart and stays single .

Luke Cage #5 ( Marvel) – It’s going down in New Orleans and I’ve got popcorn.

Brett

Top Pick: Batman: The Red Death #1 (DC Comics) – I’m all in with DC’s latest even Metal and this one gives us the scoop on one of the alternate worlds’ Batman. I’ve read it and holy crap is it good.

Catalyst Prime: Superb #3 (Lion Forge Comics) – I’ve been sucked into the Catalyst Prime world and this series is standing out in a teenage superhero sort of way that has enough different to make it a must read.

Dark Ark #1 (AfterShock) – You know the story of Noah… but what about that other ark?

Misbegotten: Runaway Nun #1 (Action Lab: Danger Zone) – Haven’t read this yet but it feels like the grindhouse sort of concept and movie that I really enjoy.

World of Animosity #1 (AfterShock) – This amazing comic world expands with this new series and is absolutely a world you should be checking out if you haven’t already.

Graphic Policy’s Top Comic Picks this Week!

Wednesdays are new comic book day! Each week hundreds of comics are released, and that can be pretty daunting to go over and choose what to buy. That’s where we come in!

We’re bringing back something we haven’t done for a while, what the team thinks. Our contributors are choosing up to five books each week and why they’re choosing the books.

Find out what folks think below, and what comics you should be looking out for this Wednesday.

Joe

Top Pick: 4 Kids Walk Into a Bank #4 (Black Mask Studios) – This series is one that has taken awhile to finish, but so far it has been worth the wait. Hopefully #5 follows shortly after!

The Flash #22 (DC Comics) – It is so far so good for The Button, and I’m excited to see how this all pans out and sets up the big fall event by Johns.

Superman #23 (DC Comics) – One of my favorite Rebirth books just keeps getting better. This looks to be another Jon heavy issue, which is okay with me.

The Mighty Thor #19 (Marvel) – Aaron has been doing a fantastic job on Thor for years, and this run is no different. I have enjoyed the epic galactic war and more Quentin Quire is never a bad thing.

Batman #23 (DC Comics) – Now that The Button is ending in this weeks The Flash, this book gets back to the aftermath of Bane. I’m looking forward to how everything plays out.

Brett

Top Pick: Star Trek: The Next Generations: Mirror Broken #1 (IDW Publishing) – The Free Comic Book Day release put this on my radar as I’m not much of a Star Trek fan (I watch the shows once in a while, but wasn’t a regular thing for me). That issue sucked me in with a Mirror world that I want to find out more about and see where this series goes.

4 Kids Walk Into A Bank #4 (Black Mask Studios) – It feels like forever since the last issue, but as soon as I start reading it it’s like getting together with an old friend. Funny and surprisingly tense this issue.

Eleanor & Egret #2 (Aftershock Comics) – The first issue was cute and quirky with a fun story and amazing art. I can’t wait for this second one.

Ian Livingstones’ Freeway Fighter #1 (Titan Comics) – The classic game comes to comics and the first issue is fantastic. If you’re a fan of Mad Max or that type of world, this is one that’s a must get.

Josephine Baker (Self Made Hero) – A graphic novel about this trailblazing woman who lived a life that’s so amazing it can’t be true… but it is, so read up and find out more.

Paul

Top Pick: Generation X #1 (Marvel) – FINALLY! I have been waiting for this title since it’s reveal. I loved the original run of Generation X back in the day, and I know this is a new batch of students taking up the name, but Jubilee is now in charge…how can this not be good? The line up is interesting, and anything with Quentin Quire is definitely worth checking out. This should be a fun read.

Super Sons #4 (DC Comics) – This book is fun and action packed and I love this new dynamic duo of Superboy and Robin. You definitely should be reading this title.

U.S.Avengers #6 (Marvel) – Steve Rogers is looking to take down Roberto and his team. Like they’re going to let that happen. This book has been hit or miss with me, but I am curious to see how they deal with Rogers and Hydra taking over.

X-Men Gold #4 (Marvel) – Gambit turns up, so you know things are going to be exciting. I’d like to see him re-join a team of X-Men, so why not this one?

Review: U.S.Avengers #5

5809521-05The time for goofy solicits is over. A.I.M. is getting serious – and Steve Rogers is here to make sure of it. But where does this leave Roberto Da Costa? Meanwhile, Sam Guthrie is a man of two worlds. Which will he choose?

I haven’t been reading the latest Captain America title, but I am well aware of what Marvel has done to the character, making him a Hydra agent and now, after recent events with the Red Skull, it would appear Steve Rogers is now running Hydra. So this title, advertised as an ‘opening salvo’ is my first real look at Hydra Steve Rogers. And if Al Ewing is writing him like the other writers are in other books, WOW I cannot believe what they have done to this character. I mean I will give Ewing credit for writing this smug, arrogant, self-righteous version of Steve; if he wanted readers to totally loathe this character, then he has done his job. The meeting between Steve and Roberto in this issue was tense and it has definitely set the tone for things to come in this book. It really drew me in and got me looking forward to see what’s going to happen next. There are some breaks in the meeting, with some smaller side stories, looking at the various members of this team, but the focus is definitely on Steve, Roberto and Hydra. Things are not going to get any easier for this team of Avengers.

And as I’m sure I’ve mentioned before in previous reviews of this title, I really enjoy Paco Diaz’ art. There’s not a lot of action in this issue, but I like his rendering of these characters and his expressions and body language on them really worked well with the story. Even just the way he had Steve sitting and lounging around really showed how much this character has changed. I’m not a huge fan of one addition to Steve’s new look that is shown towards the end of the book, but I guess it’s just hammering home what side he’s playing for now.

Overall, I really liked this issue. I absolutely hate Hydra Steve Rogers and that Marvel has taken this path with him, but the writing in this issue solidified my feelings by showing him to be an arrogant ass, so in that, it was very successful. The art, as usual, is solid and I am looking forward to seeing how this team reacts to the coming changes. Roberto has been known to be three steps ahead of his opponents, and it’s going to be interesting to see what happens when his opponent has been in front of him this whole time.
