New films pack the weekend box office top 5

It was a top five filled with new releases at the weekend box office. The Nun II dominated the weekend with over 2.5 times the gross of the second place film. The movie brought in $32.6 million domestically and $52.7 million internationally for a worldwide debut of $85.3 million. The first film opened in 2018 with $53.8 million domestically and went on to gross $365.6 million worldwide.

The Equalizer 3 took second place with 65% drop from the previous weekend and first. It grossed $12.1 million to bring its domestic total to $61.9 million. Internationally, it grossed $19.7 million over the week to bring that total to $45.8 million. Worldwide, the movie has grossed $107.7 million after two weeks.

In third place was My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3 which opened with $10 million domestically. Internationally it opened with $2.7 million for a worldwide debut of $12.7 million. The first film opened with just $597,362 in 2002 and went on to gross $368.7 million. The sequel opened with $17.9 million in 2016 and went on to earn $90.6 million.

Jawan opened with $6.2 million showing in just 813 theaters. It’s grossed $7.6 million so far with no international total reported.

Barbie wrapped the top five with $5.9 million to bring its domestic total to $620.5 million. Internationally, it grossed $10.7 million over the week to bring that to $782.2 million. The movie has now grossed $1.403 billion. It’s the top grossing domestic film for 2023 by far and the same worldwide in 2023 as well by a decent amount. The movie is currently #15 in all-time worldwide gross and will likely move up at least one spot before it’s run is over. Domestically, it’s #12 and also likely to move up at least one more spot before it’s done.

In comic film news…

Blue Beetle is out of the top five after four weeks coming in at #6 with $3.8 million. Domestically, ti has now grossed $63.7 million. Internationally it added $5 million to the gross bringing that to $50.3 million. The movie has now crossed the $100 million mark with $114 million worldwide.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem came in at #9 grossing $2.6 million domestically bringing its domestic total to $111.3 million. Internationally, the movie added $5.1 million where it has now grossed $50 million. Worldwide, the movie has brought in $161.3 million.

Shortcomings, based on the graphic novel by Adrian Tomine grossed about $2,800 over the week domestically to bring its total to $660,698.

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse looks like it added about $100,000 domestically and is at $381.3 million. Internationally, the film gained about $250,000 to bring that to $308.4 million. Worldwide, the move has grossed $689.6 million.

The week’s overall box office success…

Numbers have 56 films earning $88,369,972 from 36,811 theaters. That’s about last weekend’s $89,206,083 from 39,346 theaters and 57 films. The average earning was $2,400.64 this past weekend, a slight increase from the previous weekend’s $2,267.22.

The Equalizer 3 takes the weekend box office while Gran Turismo stalls

The Equalizer 3 was easily the of the box office beating the next film by over 3x the gross. The Equalizer 3 grossed $34.5 million domestically, with an estimated $42 million over the long weekend and $26.1 million internationally for a worldwide debut of $68.1 million. The first film opened with $55 million in 2014 to go on and earn $192.3 million worldwide and the second opened with $62 million in 2018 and went on to earn $190.4 million worldwide.

Barbie continues its amazing run adding $10.6 million to its total over the weekend to bring its domestic total to $609.5 million. Over the week it grossed $26 million internationally to bring that total to $771.5 million. Worldwide, the movie has grossed $1.381 billion. It’s the top grossing domestic film for 2023 by far and now officially the same worldwide in 2023 as well by a decent amount. There’s still 3 months to go, but this is looking like the year of Barbie and how pink saved the movie theater.

Blue Beetle held steady in third with $7.3 million bringing its domestic total to $56.6 million. Internationally it added $9.8 million to the gross bringing that to $45.3 million. The movie has now crossed the $100 million mark with $101.9 million worldwide.

Gran Turismo crashed in its second week with a 62.4% drop down to $6.6 million where it has now grossed $30.6 million domestically. Internationally, the film added $13.8 million to bring that to $50.3 million and $80.9 million worldwide.

Oppenheimer rounded out the top five with $5.5 million to bring its domestic total to $210.3 million. It brought in an impressive $65.5 million internationally over the week to bring that to $542.7 million and just under $853 million worldwide.

In comic film news…

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem slipped one spot to sixth grossing $4.8 million domestically bringing its domestic total to just under $108 million. Internationally, the movie added $7.9 million where it has now grossed $44.9 million. Worldwide, the movie has brought in $152.9 million.

Shortcomings, based on the graphic novel by Adrian Tomine grossed about $4,500 over the week domestically to bring its total to $657,810.

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse added about $200,000 domestically and is now at $381.2 million. Internationally, the film gained about $1.2 million to bring that to $308.1 million. Worldwide, the move has grossed $689.3 million.

Gran Turismo edges out a first place at the weekend box office

It’s a close call for first place, but it looks like Gran Turismo took the top of the box office with a $17.3 million debut. That’s just a hair more than the second place Barbie. Internationally, the film grossed $36.5 million for a worldwide debut of $53.8 million.

Barbie is a close second place with $17.1 million to bring its domestic total to $594.8 million. Over the week, it added $33.6 million internationally to bring that to $745.5 million. Worldwide, the film has grossed $1.340 billion. It’s now the top film domestically for 2023 but is about $19 million behind The Super Mario Bros. Movie to take the top spot worldwide.

Blue Beetle dropped from first to third with a respectable 49% drop. It grossed an estimated $12.8 million to lift its domestic total to $46.3 million. Over the week, it grossed $17.5 million to bring its international total to $35.5 million. Worldwide, the movie has grossed $81.8 million.

Oppenheimer slipped one spot to fourth with $9 million and its domestic total is now $300 million. Internationally, the movie added $44.6 million to its total which is now $477.2 million. Worldwide, the movie has grossed $777.2 million.

Rounding out the top five was Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem which grossed $6.1 million to bring its domestic total to $98.1 million. Internationally, the film added $6.7 million over the week to bring that to $37 million. Worldwide, the film has grossed $135.1 million.

Shortcomings, based on the graphic novel by Adrian Tomine grossed $7,208 domestically to bring its total to $653,313.

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse remained at just under $381 million domestically. Internationally, the film gained about $1 million to bring that to $306.9 million. Worldwide, the move has grossed $687.9 million.

Blue Beetle dethrones Barbie but delivers a soft debut

Blue Beetle was the top of the weekend box office, dethroning Barbie which has held the spot for the past four weekends. Blue Beetle debuted with $25 million domestically and $18 million internationally for a total of $43 million. That opening was on part with The Suicide Squad which opened with $26.2 million in 2021. Blue Beetle was originally supposed to be a film on HBO Max, so its theatrical numbers are a bit of a headscratcher, but the movie was projected to open between $30 and $35 million. But, the film has received positive word of mouth so this could be another case of a movie having legs and doing well over the long term.

Barbie came in second place with an estimated $21.5 million to bring its domestic gross of $567.3 million. Internationally, the film grossed $54.3 million over the week to bring the international total to $711.9 million. Worldwide, the film has grossed $1.279 billion. The film is about $8 million away from being the top grossing domestic release of the year and $76 million away from being the worldwide leader.

Oppenheimer slipped to third place with an estimated $10.6 million. Domestically, the film has grossed $285.2 million. Internationally, the film has grossed $47.8 million to lift that to $432.6 million. Worldwide, the movie has grossed $717.8 million.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem dropped one spot to come in fourth with $8.4 million. It has now grossed $88.1 million after 3 weeks. Over the week it grossed $16.9 million to bring that to $30.3 million. Worldwide, the movie has grossed $118.4 million.

Strays rounded out the top five with $8.3 million domestically and just under $2 million internationally for $10.3 million.

Shortcomings, based on the graphic novel by Adrian Tomine grossed $16,870 domestically to bring its total to $635,610.

The Flash looks like it remained at $108.1 million domestically. Internationally, the film remained at $160.4 million for a worldwide total of $268.5 million.

Barbie rules the weekend box office again as the Last Voyage of the Demeter hits choppy water

Barbie once again was the top of the weekend box office continuing an amazing run and the one of the movie stories of the year. The film added $33.7 million to its domestic total which now stands at $526.3 million. Over the week, it added $85.5 million internationally where the film has grossed $657.6 million. That brings it to just under $1.184 billion so far in just four weeks. The movie is just $48 million away domestically and $173 million internationally to be the top grossing film of the year.

Speaking of impressive runs. Oppenheimer returned to second place where it added $18.8 million to its domestic total which is now $264.3 million. Internationally, the film grossed $60.3 million over the week and now has grossed $384.8 million. Worldwide, the movie has earned a bit over $649 million.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem improved a bit coming in third place for the weekend. It grossed $15.8 million to bring its domestic total to $72.8 million. Over the week it grossed $13.4 million internationally which now stands at $21.9 million. Worldwide, the film has grossed $94.7 million.

Meg 2: The Trench fell to fourth with $12.7 million to bring its domestic total to $54.1 million. Over the week, the film grossed $90.8 million to bring its international total to $202.8 million. Worldwide, the film has grossed $256.9 million.

Rounding out the top five was The Last Voyage of the Demeter which debuted with an anemic $6.5 million. No international total has been reported.

Barbie crosses $1 billion as it holds on to first place

It’s the summer of Barbie as the film has held the top spot at the weekend box office for three weekends in a row… by a lot. The film added an reported $53 million to its domestic total bringing that to $459.4 million. It also grossed an impressive $149 million over the week internationally to bring that to $572.1 million. Worldwide, the movie has grossed over $1.031 billion dollars. It’s only the second film released in 2023 to cross the billion dollar mark and about $321 million away from taking the top spot for the year.

Meg 2: The Trench took a solid bite at the box office coming in second with $30 million. Internationally, the film grossed $112 million for a debut of $142 million worldwide. The Meg opened in 2018 with $45.4 million domestically and went on to gross $530.5 million worldwide.

Oppenheimer slipped to third with an estimated $28.7 million to bring its domestic total to $228.6 million. Over the week it grossed $98.1 million internationally to bring that total to $324.4 million. Worldwide, the movie has grossed $552.9 million.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem debuted in fourth place with $28 million. So far its earned $43.1 million domestically. Internationally, the film grossed $8.5 milllion for a worldwide gross of $51.6 million so far. With a good word of mouth, it’ll be interesting to see how this film does over its run.

Haunted Mansion rounded out the top five with just under $9 million a 62.7% drop from the previous week. It’s hard to not call this film a flop for Disney with its $42 million gross after two weeks. Over the week it grossed $8.5 million internationally to bring that to $17.6 million. Worldwide the film has earned $59.6 million.

The Flash added about $300,000 domestically to bring its gross to $108 million. Internationally, the film remained at $160.4 million for a worldwide total of $268.4 million.

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse grossed $530,000 to bring its domestic total to $380.1 million. Internationally, the film grossed about $100,000 over the week to bring that total to $303.7 million. Worldwide, the move has grossed $683.8 million.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 grossed $25,000. It has now grossed $359 million domestically. Over the week, it grossed $400,000 internationally where it has now earned $486.3 million. Worldwide, the movie has grossed $845.3 million.

Mini Reviews: What If, Mutant Mayhem, Conan, and Magneto!

Sometimes, the staff at Graphic Policy read more comics than we’re able to get reviewed. When that happens you’ll see a weekly feature compiling reviews of the comics, or graphic novels, we just didn’t get a chance to write a full one for.

What If…? Dark: Venom #1 (Marvel) – Stephanie Phillips and Jethro Morales have Thing merge with the Venom symbiote in the latest installment of What If…? Dark. Set in the 1980s after Secret Wars when Thing left the team, this one-shot plays off Ben Grimm’s desire to be human to great effect. Of course, the symbiote makes him human again, but there’s a cost, and Thing indulges his dark side with the help of Lizard. Phillips and Morales draw a parallel between Curt Connors and Grimm musing if Thing would be considered a hero if he wasn’t part of the Fantastic Four. Sadly, the third act turns this interesting relationship into pure edginess, but there’s 2/3 of an interesting and badass at times comic in What If Dark Venom #1. Overall: 7.4 Verdict: Read (I purchased a copy)

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem– TMNT: Mutant Mayhem is like going to the movies with your cool (probably stoner) older brother. The latest reboot based on the most successful independent comic of all time goes for Gen Z in a lot of its jokes, references (Leonardo “rizzes up” April O’Neil), and of course, in the voice performances of the Turtles, but is pure Gen X in its soundtrack with lots of classic hip hop cuts from ODB, Gang Starr, and De La Soul to name a few. TMNT: Mutant Mayhem focuses on the “teenage” side of the mutant ninja turtles as Leonardo, Donatello, Raphael, and Donatello just want to live normal lives with humans and go to high school instead of cowering in the sewers with their human-phobic father Splinter. However, the bad guys are all mutant as Super Fly (Ice Cube) plots with a veritable menagerie of mutated animals to take out all the humans and make New York an extension of the Bronx Zoo. The seven writers on this film and director Jeff Rowe give Mutant Mayhem an anarchic spirit that literally oozes from the DIY-ish animation style, and the voice cast is star-studded, but not in annoying, say Rio way. Paul Rudd as a chill mutant gecko is the find of the year, and Ayo Edibiri’s earnestness and nervous energy as April O’Neil is the definitive performance of this TMNT ally. The final fight is a little on the short side, but overall, TMNT: Mutant Mayhem is an audiovisual feast with a great sense of humor that does “hated and feared” better than most of the X-Men films. Overall: 8.2

Conan the Barbarian #1 (Titan) – Set in Conan’s younger adventuring days, writer Jim Zub, artist Rob de la Torre, and colorist Jose Villarrubia immediately raise the stakes by having Conan and his new ally, the Pict women Brissa, face off against undead tribe of Picts that are ravaging the countryside. The highlights are the brutal battle sequences with de la Torre and Villarrubia excelling at both close-up intimate panels and huge spreads of the carnage. Unlike the Free Comic Book Day issue, Zub is more sparing with his purple prose captions using them to dig into the larger themes of Conan #1 even though sometimes they end up describing the visuals of the panels. All in all, Conan the Barbarian #1 nails its protagonist’s world-weariness with a heart of gold and feels like a throwback to the old John Buscema Conan comics while adding psychological depth and exploring its hero’s connection to his Cimmerian roots. Overall: 8.1 Verdict: Buy (I purchased a copy)

Magneto #1 (Marvel) – Magneto #1 continues to try to answer the age-old question: how could Magneto be both hero or terrorist? Featuring retro art from Todd Nauck and a psychologically savvy script from JM DeMatteis, this tale set in the 1980s features Magneto caught between being the teacher of the New Mutants and the leader of a new iteration of the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants. Magneto #1 takes its time to explore pivotal moments from Erik Lehnsherr’s going deep into his motivations, and how the big attack in X-Men #1 was just him playing role and basically trying to get the X-Men over as heroes. DeMatteis and Nauck also don’t shy away from portraying Magneto in a negative light like a scene where he freaks out at Wolfsbane and almost hurts her with his magnetic abilities. The comic strikes the perfect balance between nostalgia and character study and has some big action scenes to boot like a Danger Room showdown between the New Mutants and Brotherhood. Overall: 8.4 Verdict: Buy
