The Marvels opens in first but deliver a low for the Marvel Cinematic Universe

The Marvels

While it shouldn’t be a surprise that The Marvels opened in first place at the weekend box office, the film was the lowest opening for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Internationally, the film did about the same with $41.5 million for a worldwide debut of $88.5 million. It continues a string of misses for Disney, while even taken into account the shift in viewing post-pandemic, is struggling at the box office overall. It also will add fuel to the recent backlash and negativity towards Marvel as a whole that the film studio and its comic publishing counterpart need to course correct and find a new and better path.

The Exorcist: Believer

The weekend results are in and it’s not too surprising in that The Exorcist: Believer took the top spot for the weekend. With pretty brutal reviews, the film took first with an estimated $27.2 million domestically and $17.9 million internationally. That delivered an opening weekend of $45.1 million worldwide. The critics and audiences have eviscerated the film so expect it to drop hard but with Halloween coming, the film may hang on a bit just due to the season.

And that means that PAW Patrol: The Mighty Movie dropped to second place with an estimated $11.8 million to bring its domestic total to $38.9 million. Saw X came in second with $18 million domestically and $11.3 million internationally for a worldwide debut of $29.3 million worldwide. That domestic opening was similar to the first film, better than Saw VI‘s $14.1 million, 2017’s Jigsaw‘s $16.6 million, and Spiral’s $8.8 million in 2021.
