You’re paranoid. But are you paranoid enough? Matt Kindt’s defining statement on psychic espionage returns with an all-new, entirely self-contained entry point into the genre-bending, Eisner Award-nominated series that Entertainment Weekly calls “one of the most experimental and fascinating books in mainstream comics.”

New agents. New mission. The rest is classified.

MIND MGMT: NEW AND IMPROVED #1

FORT PSYCHO #1 (of 12)

Written by Matt Kindt
Art & Cover by Brian Hurtt

Ten years ago, the nation of Singapore sank into the Pacific Ocean. The underground terrorist network known as The Seven Seals took credit for the largest act of terror in human history. In the aftermath, the United Nations created a strike team of highly trained covert operatives with one mission: locate, identify, and eliminate The Seven Seals’ secretive leader.

The team’s clandestine affairs were to always remain in the shadows – until their final, explosive confrontation with The Seven Seals resulted in a large-scale tragedy too bloody to cover up and too tragic to ignore. Disgraced and disavowed by the governments that trained them, the world’s most dangerous secret agents have been convicted for their crimes and sentenced to serve time side-by-side in the one place capable of holding them: their old island headquarters, Fort Cyclone – now known in the media by the derogatory nickname “Fort Psycho.”

And that’s where the official story is about to go terribly, terribly wrong.

From master storytellers Matt Kindt (BRZKR, Mind MGMT) and Brian Hurtt (The Sixth Gun), MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE meets LOST on a tropical island paradise stocked with trained killers, secret betrayals, and the long-buried truth about the mission that brought them there. Always remember: There is nothing deadlier than an ally turned enemy.

Spy Superb #3 leaves us wanting more

Spy Superb #3

For three issues, Spy Superb has delivered fantastic action comedy. And now that Spy Superb #3 is here, I’m left wanting more of it. The concept is rather simple, Jay is the perfect spy. A spy so perfect he doesn’t even realize he is a spy and that he’s on a mission. Jay is a useful idiot. And now he’s on the run being hunted and protected by spies who know what they’re doing.

Matt Kindt delivers the art and story for a series that has delivered with every issue. It has left me laughing. It has had me appreciating the dance of action. And I’ve lingered on the art. It’s the usual Matt Kindt story in that way. But here, he’s taken the cool spy vibe he’s mastered and mixed it with humor. A lot of humor. Every issue has been packed with absurd moments that’ll leave readers laughing but also lingering on how exactly everything has gone down. Spy Superb #3 is no different in that way.

But even more impressively is what Kindt packs into the issue. While the mysterious spy Lucky has been in the series from early on, we know little about her. Kindt uses the third issue to fix that delivering a fantastic origin story that in some ways leaves us questioning exactly who the Spy Superb really is. Is it Jay? Or, is it Lucky?

Kindt’s art continues to amaze. Joined by Sharlene Kindt on color, the style has an almost watercolor look to it at times but it’s the motion and perspective of it all that’s impressive. There’s a distinct style to Kindt’s work, you know it instantly when you see it. And part of that style is packing small details that add to the world, and in this case how good Lucky is. There’s one particular spread that’ll leave readers lingering, mapping out the possible action to come. It’s the usual fantastic visuals I’d expect from one of their comics.

Spy Superb #3 wraps up this trilogy of issues and leaves me wanting more. There’s so much more that can be done and where this series can go, here’s hoping we get exactly that.

Find out what folks think below, and what comics you should be looking out for this week.

Bea Wolf (First Second) – It’s an update of the classic Beowulf but with kids.

By the Horns: Dark Earth #7 (Scout Comics) – The fantasy series is always a lot of fun and one we’re excited to read with each release.

Colin Kaepernick: Change the Game (Graphix) – High school star athlete Colin Kaepernick is at a crossroads in life. We’re intrigued about this one which focuses on the activist football player.

Darkwing Duck #3 (Dynamite Entertainment) – We’ve had so much fun with this comic series which brings back the classic animated series.

The Forged #1 (Image Comics) – In the 11th Millennium of the rule of the Eternal Empress, a squad of planet-smashing super soldiers find their routine mission to be anything but. These are the Forged. They take no prisoners. Concept sounds cool and Greg Rucka, Eric Trautmann, and Mike Henderson being the creative team has us more excited.

Harrower #2 (BOOM! Studios) – The first issue kicked off what felt like a great horror franchise and we’re excited to see the body count rise and find out more about what’s going on.

Hellcat #1 (Marvel) – Patsy is the prime suspect in a murder and must prove her innocence. We’re pumped to see where this one goes.

Lastman Vol. 2 (Image Comics/Skybound) – The fantasy/martial arts series continues in this new edition from Skybound. Combining two volumes in each release, we get to experience even more action with each!

Ms. Davis (Fantagraphics) – A graphic biography about the 1960s revolutionary.

No/One #1 (Image Comics) – Part of the Massive-verse, ten months ago, the Richard Roe murders shocked the city of Pittsburgh. In the months since, the killings have sparked a dangerous political movement, copycat killers, and a masked vigilante who’s still determined to hold the powerful accountable.

Spy Superb #3 (Dark Horse Comics) – The series wraps up and each issue has featured laughs and tons of spy action.

Star Trek: Defiant #1 (IDW Publishing) – Worf in charge of the U.S.S. Defiant again? Yeah, we’re in.

Superman Lost #1 (DC Comics) – Christopher Priest writing Superman. Nuff said.

WildC.A.T.s #5 (DC Comics) – Every issue has been full of action and laughs. We’re beyond excited when each hits the shelf. The classic team is back!

X-Cellent #1 (Marvel) – Zeitgeist is still on a mission to achieve social media godhood, no matter who he has to kill! But the next generation of X-Statix drop in!

Spy Superb #2 ups the action and comedy in this spy thriller

Spy Superb #2

The Spy Superb is a useful idiot. An average person recruited to be the ultimate spy and carry out a mission, which they might not know about. The latest is a failed writer, full of himself, and narcissistic. It’s a combination that makes the character not just a useful idiot but just a plain irritant too. Spy Superb #2 ups the action as China and Russia want to capture the Spy Superb for their own reasons.

Written by and art by Matt Kindt, Spy Superb #2 continues the comedy spy action as Jay must deal with the fact there’s a dead hit squad in his apartment. He’s decided to seek out the woman on the phone he has while not understanding what’s going on around him. At the same time, Russia and China are convinced there’s a new Spy Superb who must be stopped and each dispatches a top agent to bring him in.

All of this is done with a wink and a smile as Kindt continues to deliver a comic that’s part love letter to spy action but also a bit of a spoof of the genre as well. It does a great job of mixing up the action but also having fun with it all. Jay is an idiot. He both thinks he’s amazing, displaying his not deserved confidence on his adventure. At the same time, those around him are unsure of what they’re dealing with. Is this the greatest spy ever or a complete moron?

This is a genre we’ve seen before many times but it’s done here with such fun delivery it’s hard to not enjoy the ride. We want to see Jay get slapped in reality but at the same time, how he’ll get out of the situation is a fun puzzle to sit back and enjoy.

Kindt’s art is his signature style with color by Sharlene Kindt. The comic has the watercolor like look the Kindt comics are known for and each character has such personality in their depiction. There’s an awkwardness in everyone here but like the over the top situations, there’s a fun aspect to it all.

Spy Superb #2 in the end is action comedy and it does it so well. You can see the comic play out as if it were on the screen with a great delivery of the lines and exasperation of so many of the characters as they get dragged into Jay’s adventure. It’s popcorn fun in comic form and a ride I want to sit back and enjoy.

Graphic Policy’s Top Comic Picks this Week!

Monarch #1

Wednesdays (and Tuesdays) are new comic book day! Each week hundreds of comics are released, and that can be pretty daunting to go over and choose what to buy. That’s where we come in

Each week our contributors choose what they can’t wait to read this week or just sounds interesting. In other words, this is what we’re looking forward to and think you should be taking a look at!

Find out what folks think below, and what comics you should be looking out for this week.

A Home Without (Northwest Press) – An autobiographical graphic novel about a boy growing up in the Bible Belt of the 1980s.

Bishop: War College #1 (Marvel) – Bishop is leading and teaching a new team!

The Exiled #1 (WhatNot Publishing) – Wesley Snipes doing a comic. Nuff said.

Harrower #1 (BOOM! Studios) – A new horror series from Justin Jordan and Brahm Revel that sounds like a nice throwback to slasher/horror films of the 70s and 80s.

How I Became a Shoplifter #1 (Sumerian Comics) – A year by year look at the final generation of juvenile delinquents before technology took over. The concept sounds really intriguing.

I Am the Law: How Judge Dredd Predicted Our Future (Rebellion/2000AD) – Blending comic book history with contemporary radical theories on policing, I Am The Law takes key Dredd stories from the last 45 years and demonstrates how they provide a unique wake up call about our gradual, and not so gradual, slide towards authoritarian policing.

Marry Me a Little (Graphic Mundi) – Recounting same-sex marriage before the Supreme Court decision in Obergefell v. Hodges made gay marriage the law of the land.

Monarch #1 (Image Comics) – Growing up in the city of Compton is tough enough as it is, but as Travon has learned all too well, growing up as an orphan in the city of Compton with gang members hunting you down every day is even tougher. But all of that is about to change, because today is the day that aliens make first contact with Earth-and it only spells doom for life as we know it! Read our glowing review here!

Red Goblin #1 (Marvel) – Normie Osborn gets his own symbiote. We’re hoping this isn’t the expansion of too many symbiotes again but it’s clearly leading somewhere.

Saga of a Doomed Universe #3 (CEX Publishing) – In 1984, the unlikeliest heroes emerge at the world’s end: a memory-powered loser named Super-Sleuth and the often-held-hostage heroine, Psionica. Reality itself is now threatened!

The Secret History of Black Punk: Record Zero (Silver Sprocket) – An illustrated roll-call for punk, post-punk, hardcore, no wave, and experimental bands from ground zero until now.

Space Job #1 (Dark Horse Comics) – After five long years of soul-crushing servitude as a chef’s assistant, Danny Sheridan is getting his dream job in space as First Officer aboard the SS George H.W. Bush. But on his first day he finds himself crashing back to reality. Nothing seems right. We’re intrigued by this one.

Spy Superb #2 (Dark Horse Comics) – Matt Kindt alone sells this one for us but the first issue was amazing. The series is about spies so perfect, they don’t realize they’re spies!

Static: Shadows of Dakota #1 (DC Comics/Milestone) – Static is back! The second season kicks off here as a new threat lurks in the shadows!

Storm and the Brotherhood of Mutants #1 (Marvel) – A “Sins of Sinister” series. The debut was solid and Storm leading a resistance against Sinister sounds too awesome.

Under the Banner of King Death (Beacon Press) – Set at the pinnacle of the “Golden Age” of Atlantic piracy, this novel follows three unlikely companions, who are sold into servitude on a merchant ship and unwittingly thrust into a voyage of rebellion.

(W) Matt Kindt (A/CA) Matt Kindt
From New York Times bestselling and Harvey award-winning graphic novelist Matt Kindt comes the latest Flux House humorous espionage adventure.

It’s John Wick meets Wes Anderson in this mystery-thriller about a secret organization that’s developed the perfect spy. Who is the perfect spy? A spy who doesn’t even realize they are a spy. AKA the “useful idiot.” This particular useful idiot is named Jay. Jay is sent on missions without even realizing he’s on a mission. Until he picks up the wrong phone with the wrong secret intel and now Russian hit-squads and elite assassins are after him. But Jay believes he was a sleeper agent-and really is the “spy superb”. His complete obliviousness and lack of survival skills may be the only thing that saves him in this globe-trotting espionage tale . . . where nothing is what it seems . . . but also . . . kind of actually is what it seems.

Spy Superb #1 kicks off more Kindt magic

Spy Superb #1

When Matt Kindt‘s name is on a comic, it’s well worth a look. Not only does he deliver fun, off-beat stories but the art features a unique style you can’t find anywhere else. It feels like so many of what Kindt has put out before falls into the “cool spy” genre, but always with a spin on it. Spy Superb #1 kicks off the latest in that space delivering a fantastic concept and a lot of laughs.

Spy Superb is the greatest spy ever. They’re a master of everything that other nations have spent billions trying to find the secret of. Spy Superb also doesn’t exist, it’s an idea. What started out as a legit program morphed into a myth and a project where every day people are used to carry out spy missions.

It’s spy meets useful idiot.

Yes, the concept has been done before and even the fantastic action scene has been done been done before, but Kindt delivers a take that’s fun and entertaining. It comes off as both serious as well as a goof on the spy genre. It’s popcorn entertainment in every way that you can imagine being on the big screen.

The fun is delivered in Kindt’s unique art style with colors provided by Sharlene Kindt. The water color meets “rough sketch” look has become a signature of Kindt’s comics and here it works so well adding to the almost dreamlike concept of the comic. It also emphasizes the humor as utterly ridiculous moments are highlighted. The characters themselves tell a story in their look where you know exactly where they’re coming from in life and adds to their personality.

Spy Superb #1 is another winning debut for Kindt that keeps up his streak of fun spy action comics with great spins. It’s a fantastic start to the year and first week of new comics delivering what should be a fun ride to come.
