Awesome Con 2026: Firefly Animated Series in Development

Firefly character design

After a lot of buildup and teases, Nathan Fillion announced during Awesome Con 2026 that he and 20th Television Animation are in advanced stages of development on a new animated series based on the beloved cult sci-fi franchise Firefly. The reveal came during a panel and live taping of his podcast “Once We Were Spacemen” during Awesome Con in Washington, D.C., where the news was met by a packed, standing-room-only crowd with thunderous applause and enthusiastic cheers.

Fillion made the announcement alongside his former Firefly co-star and podcast co-host Alan Tudyk, joined by fellow original cast members Gina Torres, Jewel Staite, Morena Baccarin, Sean Maher, and Summer Glau that amplified speculation already building online.

The reveal followed a viral social media campaign featuring a series of cryptic videos starring Fillion and several of his “Firefly” co-stars. In the first clip, Fillion knocks on what appears to be a production trailer door as Torres asks, “Does this mean it’s time?” Fillion responds simply, “It’s time.” Subsequent videos featured Baccarin, Maher, Staite, Glau, Baldwin and Tudyk, which ignited intense fan speculation and generated tens of millions of views across platforms.

Since the videos have surfaced online, they have garnered over 28 million views on various social platforms. The original “Firefly” series has surged to the top of the streaming charts.

The animated reboot is being developed through Fillion’s production banner Collision33 in partnership with 20th Television Animation, which controls the underlying rights to the franchise. The proposed series is set in the timeline between the original 2002 television run and its 2005 feature film continuation, Serenity, expanding the universe while preserving continuity with the established lore.

A script has been completed, and early concept art has been developed in collaboration with the Oscar and Emmy award-winning animation studio ShadowMachine. The fully assembled package is expected to be taken out to buyers shortly.

Married writing-producing team Marc Guggenheim and Tara Butters are attached to serve as showrunners, marking their first formal professional collaboration as a duo.

Originally produced by 20th Century Fox Television and created by Joss Whedon, Firefly aired for a single season before developing a long afterlife through DVD sales, streaming platforms, and its theatrical continuation in Serenity. The animated format provides an opportunity to revisit the franchise’s original ensemble dynamics while allowing for expanded storytelling within the established timeline.

Deadpool Comes to Blu-ray and DVD May 10th

Deadpool is coming to Blu-ray and DVD on May 10th (though digital sooner) with lots of extras.

Hold onto your chimichangas, folks. From the studio that brought you all 3 Taken films comes Deadpool, the block-busting, fourth-wall-breaking masterpiece about Marvel Comics’ sexiest anti-hero: me! Go deep inside (he loves that) his origin story…typical stuff…rogue experiment, accelerated healing powers, horrible disfigurement, red spandex, imminent revenge. Directed by overpaid tool Tim Miller, and starring God’s perfect idiot Ryan Reynolds, Ed Skrein, Morena Baccarin, T.J. Miller and Gina Carano, Deadpool is a giddy slice of awesomeness packed with more twists than my enemies’ intestines and more action than prom night. Amazeballs!

Check out the extras below!

Deadpool 2

Movie Review: Deadpool

deadpool posterThe Merc with a Mouth finally comes to the big screen in Deadpool, based on the over saturated Marvel Comics character created by Rob Liefeld and given personality by Fabian Nicieza and later Joe Kelly.

How do I describe the 1 hour and 48 minutes? Take a Loony Tunes cartoon, throw some spandex, 80s action films, swear words, lots of over the top violence, and then have it do a few lines of coke, mix it all up, and you have Deadpool.

The story of the film isn’t anything special. Wade Wilson, played by Ryan Reynolds, undergoes a process in hopes to cure his cancer. The process is much more than it seems and turns him in to Deadpool. From there, it’s a revenge tale, that for some reason has some X-Men thrown in.

The film is completely on Reynolds shoulders, which makes sense since the actor has spent about a decade trying to make the film happen. If you enjoy is spins in Van Wilder, or Blade Trinity, the motor mouthed smart ass with a line for everything, you’ll enjoy his performance. It’s funny, it’s at times offensive, and it’s pretty quick witted. The film is one I want to see the out takes, because if this is what was left in, I can’t imagine what was left out and it’s pretty clear a lot of the lines were improvised.

The action for the film is over the top like expected, and there were things I had never seen before in a film, so it absolutely has that going for it. It’s a film that looks fantastic, using slow motion at just the right moments to emphasize the ludicrous visuals we see on the screen.

But where’s Deadpool without his supporting cast? T.J. Miller as Weasel is very entertaining, and much more subdued than I expected. Morena Baccarin as Wade’s love interest Vanessa is charming in the scenes she’s in, but she does little other than being a plot device, though she does give as much as she takes when it comes to quips. Leslie Uggams as Blind Al feels like she comes out of nowhere and is rather underused.

Where the movie fails is generally in its bad guys and guest stars. Ed Skrein as Ajax and Gina Carano as Angel Dust are the two bad guys and it’s never quite clear who they’re working for or the bigger picture. It’s all mentioned, but it’s rather silly, and feels like a set-up to just watch Deadpool kill people and be a smart ass. There’s no mention of Weapon X, which is a let down, though it can all easily be put in there in sequels if need be. Stefan Kapicic as Colossus just feels weird in the film and there’s clearly back story hinted at (can you say prequel?). The exception to all this is Brianna Hildebrand as Negasonic Teenage Warhead. Can we get more of her please? She stole the show in each scene she’s in.

Where the film truly wins is its not giving a fuck attitude. It breaks the fourth wall regularly and Reynolds has no issue with picking on himself and his past film work, which is great to see. The film as a whole picks on itself, its studio, its director, actors, the CGI, nothing is sacred and everything is game. A continuing joke is Reynolds himself, showing off the actors willingness to take punches as much as he can give them.

I went in expecting the worst, and came out wanting more. The film isn’t for kids, and while I find Deadpool beyond irritating in comics, here he’s beyond enjoyable. And it’s all due to Reynolds. He nails it, and the film nails it, in every way there is. If you found the marketing leading up to the film funny. If you want your superheroes a bit more violent, with a bit more swear words, and definitely not for kids, Deadpool is for you.

Overall Rating: 8.1

Deadpool Red Band Trailer

The above is the Red Band trailer. Below is the non Red Band trailer.

Based upon Marvel Comics’ most unconventional anti-hero, Deadpool tells the origin story of former Special Forces operative turned mercenary Wade Wilson, who after being subjected to a rogue experiment that leaves him with accelerated healing powers, adopts the alter ego Deadpool. Armed with his new abilities and a dark, twisted sense of humor, Deadpool hunts down the man who nearly destroyed his life.

The film stars Ryan Reynolds, Morena Baccarin, Ed Skrein, T.J. Miller, Gina Carano, and Brianna Hildebra.

From Gotham to Deadpool. And Bamfing into X-Men Apocalypse.

Morena_Baccarin_@_the_FlanventionTwo casting announcements hit the web yesterday, both for movies based on Marvel Comic characters.

The Hollywood Reporter has announced that Morena Baccarin has joined the cast of next year’s Deadpool film as the female lead. She’ll play the love interest to Ryan Reynold’s Deadpool. She joins the recently announced Gina Carano, and T.J. Miller on the film.

Baccarin is no stranger to comic properties, and especially not geek ones. She has one hell of a career including Inara Serra on Firefly, the voice of Black Canary/Dinah Lance and Edgar Mandragora in the Justice League animated series, Adria on Stargate SG-1, Anna in the 2011 V remake, the voice of Cheetah in the Batman: The Brave and the Bold television series, the voice of Talia al Ghul in Son of Batman, and most recently is the voice of Gideon in The CW’s The Flash, and is Dr. Leslie Thompkins on Fox’s Gotham. Fox is also behind Deadpool. Despite her impressive career and lots of comic related roles, this is her first Marvel one.

Director Bryan Singer has taken to Instagram to announce the latest addition to X-Men: Apocalypse. Kodi Smith-McPhee will be joining the film as Kurt Wagner/Nightcrawler, a role last played by Alan Cumming in X2.

Smith-McPhee was seen in last year’s Dawn of the Planet of the Apes.

Two More Celebrity Guests Announced For Toronto Comic Con 2015

morena 01The organizers for Toronto Comic Con have announced two more celebrity guests expected to attend the convention in 2015.  Both guests are high profile enough to be known to a wide selection of fans.  Morena Baccarin is perhaps better known for having played a lot of science fiction roles in lesser seen series, many of which have a level of cult following among their fans.   She has been in Firefly and the short-lived revival of V as well as playing in Homeland.  She is presently a member of the cast for Gotham.  Fans were disappointed in 2014 when a scheduling change necessitated her canceling attendance to the convention at the last minute.

JAugustRichardsJ. August Richards likely has more immediate recognizability, after playing Deathlok on the first season of Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.   Although the story line in the first season was often panned for its lack of direction, by the time that the series got on firmer footing the character was a major player in the conspiracy which took down S.H.I.E.L.D.  Fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe who stuck it out through the first season will recognize him for his gradual change into Deathlok, and the role he had in the other characters’ development.  He is also known for a supporting role in the television series Angel.
