New Frank Miller Presents Details Revealed

Ronin by Philip Tan and Daniel Henriques
Ronin by Philip Tan and Daniel Henriques

One of the more intriguing announcements of the year is the new publisher Frank Miller Presents. Founded by comic legend Frank Miller, the publisher is looking to both the past and future to chart its course. During the announcement it was revealed that some of Miller’s older properties would return while brand new ones would debut. Joining Miller in the venture is Dan DiDio as Editor in Chief and president and Silenn Thomas as COO. DiDio will spill some of those at this weekend’s Megacon but ahead of the convention some have been revealed.

Ronin was originally published by DC in 1983 and 84 and was a samurai story set in a dark future. Philip Tan and inker Daniel Henriques will be the team behind a sequel featuring layouts by Miller. The story will explore the life of Casey McKenna, a security officer pursuing the nameless Ronin and who had a child with him.

Sin City returns with Sin City 1858 that will be written and drawn by Miller. Set in the Wild West, the series will feature familiar names. The once only black and white series will get a one-issue special in color featuring artist Milo Manara.

New projects include Ancient Enemies created and designed by Danilo Beyruth and Didio and others created by Miller. DiDio will write the series. It focuses on an old war between alien races.

Pandora is a sci-fi fantasy story written by Anthony Maranville and Chris Silvestri and drawn by Emma Kubert. It’s described as a “fairy tale-like beauty and a genuine spookiness”.

Recently, it was announced that Frank Miller Presents had inked an exclusive distribution deal with Diamond. It’s expected to release 2 to 4 titles a year with the first being released later in 2022.

Milo Manara honors the heroic women of the COVID-19 pandemic

Legendary Italian artist Milo Manara has a niece that works as a nurse, an essential worker. She’s in the trenches, right smack in the middle of one of Europe’s most worrying Coronavirus hotzones: Italy. Manara, inspired by the work his niece and every other essential worker takes on daily despite the risk of infection, has taken to pen, paper, and ink to recognize the degree of heroism each one represents in a series of illustrations dedicated to them.

by Milo Manara

Fans of Manara expect erotic and sensual explorations of female beauty, the politics of sex, and even the more deceitful aspects of sex as a means of control (see his work on The Borgias, co-created with Alejandro Jodorowsky). For his COVID-19 Heroes illustrations, Manara reins in the eroticism to focus entirely on showing his gratitude to the women who brave the virus to fulfill essential duties.

Manara started posting these illustrations on his Facebook and Instagram pages on March 15, starting with a piece called “It’s You Against Me, Now!” in which a nurse stares down a giant COVID-19 molecule. He captioned the post with a simple yet resounding “Grazie.”

“It’s You Against Me, Now,” Milo Manara

The illustrations feel like an attempt at preserving the memory of these workers as a means to keep a visual record of the things women have put on the line to help keep the world turning. They still have the overall look and feel of the women Manara is famous for illustrating, but the purpose is to provide a visual profile that kind of speaks for itself at a mere glance. And it succeeds in every aspect.

Another valuable and important point Manara makes through this project relates to the very definition of ‘essential.’ We see nurses and teachers, but we also see vendors, women doing deliveries, supermarket cashiers, and crossing guards, all presented as equally important. It’s as if Manara’s urging us to recognize that all work is essential, regardless of its nature.

by Milo Manara

Milo Manara is currently 74 years of age, so he’s in one of the more vulnerable groups of people affected by the pandemic. According to a Heavy Metal article, he’s surviving by staying inside with the help of his daughter, who brings him groceries and supplies. In essence, this is Manara paying his debt back.

Wonder Woman artist Mirka Andolfo explores the universal language of love in Unnatural

Writer/artist Mirka Andolfo will bring her gorgeous sensual fantasy Unnatural—originally published in Italian as Contro Natura—to Image Comics this July.

In Unnatural, a totalitarian government patrols the personal lives of its citizens, punishing transgressors who engage in “unnatural” relationships. According to this regime, individuals may only enter into relationships with those of the same race, and different gender, as themselves.

Sweet, unassuming pig girl Leslie dreams of something different for herself. But her dreams are becoming dangerous—they’ve begun to involve a mysterious wolf, for starters. And when she wakes, she could swear she’s being watched…

Unnatural #1, Cover A by Andolfo (Diamond code: MAY180023) and Cover B by Milo Manara (Diamond code: MAY180024), hits comic book stores Wednesday, July 4th. The final order cutoff deadline for comics retailers is Monday, June 11th.

The Case of Two Manara Covers

Much has been made this week of the Milo Manara variant cover for Marvel‘s Spider-Woman #1. The issue has been covered by numerous comic focused blogs, but has also spilled over into the mainstream media including Time and The Guardian among others.

Many have made the excuse that the depiction of Spider-Woman by Manara matches his erotic style, something he’s known for. This is what he does, and should be expected. But, released today was another variant cover by Manara for Thor: God of Thunder #25.

They’re both below, side by side, and I think comparing the two, one depicting a woman the other a man, sums up the issue.

Clearly Manara can do more than “erotic” covers, sadly he only chooses to do that when a woman is not involved.  Check out more covers of his below the jump.

Spider-Woman #1 is Ass-Tastic

Marvel has been on a role lately with their All-New Marvel NOW! initiative which has given us some refreshing new series, many of which feature women. To say many of these books are empowering and the much-needed “female” touch that’s been missing in comics for some time is an understatement. Many of these series are some of my favorite comics on the market right now.

The latest entry is Spider-Woman, debuting in November, a character who has had numerous series in the past, many of which I’ve enjoyed. However, judging by the first two released covers for the series by Greg Land and Milo Manara, that good will might be going off the rails.

Up first is Land’s cover, which you can see below. There’s so many issues with the cover, from the strange chest out pose of Jessica Drew, her missing lower legs, or the odd contortion of Silk as if she’s purposely trying to show off her ass. There’s a retro vibe about it, but not in a good way.

spider-woman 1 greg landAnd if Land’s cover wasn’t bad enough, enter Manara’s entry, going for the whole enchilada of pure sexual exploitation. Manara, an Italian artist, is best known for his “erotic” artwork, and we can see it here with the focus of his image being Jessica Drew’s rear-end. Not only is the contortion of her body odd, the position actually matches Manara’s previous erotic work in Click!. The pose is sexual, unrealistic, the anatomy doesn’t make sense, and generally you have to wonder what the hell everyone was thinking approving either of these.

spider-woman 1 Milo ManaraMarvel has excelled at trying new things when it comes to their female centric new titles, but this just feels like the past grasping to hold on. One step forward, two steps back I guess.

Preview: Smash Into a First Look at the All-New She-Hulk #1!

Lawyer. Avenger. Hero. Friend. Jennifer Walters has been called many things – but to most, she’s known only as the She-Hulk! Today, Marvel has released a first look at She-Hulk #1 – the all-new ongoing series written by rising star Charles Soule and drawn by fan-favorite artist Javier Pulido!  Savior of the world on more than one occasion, Jennifer Walters is embarking on a brand new, and no less dangerous mission – opening a new law practice!

In an interview with Marvel.com, Soule said:

One of the big themes I’m going to play with is how in the world Jennifer is supposed to do everything she’s supposed to do. We don’t want things to be easy for our heroes—we want to see them overcome great difficulties. She-Hulk will battle one of the greatest villains of all: scheduling.

But She-Hulk will fight her share of giant robots and irradiated monsters, I promise.

But juggling her caseload and kicking bad guy butt might be a bit more complicated than she imagines. Not to mention the growing number of supervillains she’s making personal enemies of. Sure she can knock The Thing out in one punch, but this time she may have bit off more than she can chew! And that’s just the start of it. Don’t miss a new beginning for the jade champion of justice when She-Hulk #1 smashes into comic shops this February!

Preview: Answer the Call – Your First Look at Avengers World #1!

This January, the Avengers will be tested like never before – and it all starts in the exciting Avengers World #1 – an all-new series from the star studded creative team of Jonathan Hickman, Nick Spencer and Stefano Caselli!

Following the events of Infinity, our heroes have returned from the stars to find a very different Earth. New threats have emerged on the world they left behind, and new measures have risen up to deal with them. Earth has been marked an “Avengers World”, safely under the protection of Earth’s Mightiest.

But how will the nations and governments of the world respond to their claim – and what happens when it’s denied?

Editor Tom Brevoort in an interview elaborated:

The premise of the book is that it’s the Avengers, doing big things, because it’s an Avengers World now. But while we’ll field the same potential lineup of 18+ Avengers in WORLD, we’ll specifically be looking to give greater screen time to some of the newer Avengers, like Hyperion, Smasher, Cannonball, Shang-Chi, Starbrand and Sunspot.

Witness the beginning of a new globe-spanning epic of empires and armies – and the few heroes that stand between them and us this January in the blockbuster Avengers World #1!
