Vampire Hunter D: Message From Mars #1 Sells Out, Plus Charity Sale!

Stranger Comics has announced that Diamond Comics expects to sell out of Vampire Hunter D #1 by this weekend. Demand for the book has been strong and feedback from many retailers indicates that the title was under ordered. The 2nd printing will be available to order from Diamond Comics next week with an expected in store date of December 14th. The artwork for the 2nd printing will be an inked version of Jae Lee’s variant cover which has already been released in a color retail version and a penciled retailer incentive.

Written by Brandon Easton with artwork by Michael Broussard, Vampire Hunter D: Message from Mars is based on a previously unpublished story by franchise creator Hideyuki Kikuchi. It represents the first ever western style comic adaptation of the long-running Japanese novel series. The comic series is being produced in partnership with Unified Pictures and Digital Frontier, producers of the upcoming animated series, a US and Japanese co-production.

Additionally, Stranger and the CBSI podcast have jointly announced a variant for the first issue to be sold to benefit the son of artist Steve Rude. Steve’s son Brandon recently underwent 2 surgeries and has several more to go. Stranger is donating the variant to help Steve with the medical bills. 100% of proceeds will go to the Rude family.

The Darkness #100

THE DARKNESS REACHES THE CENTURY MARK
Landmark 100th issue in stores February 29

Berkeley, CA — February 23, 2012 — Top Cow Productions and Image Comics proudly announced today that Darkness 100, the landmark anniversary issue, will land in stores February 29th, 2012.

The over-sized 100th issue follows hot on the heels of the release of The Darkness II video game from 2K Games and Digital Extremes. Long time writer PHIL HESTER (Wonder Woman, Green Hornet) concludes his epic run on the series with artists ROMANO MOLENAAR (THE DARKNESS II : CONFESSION), LEANDRO OLIVEIRA (Superman), and JOSE LUIS (PILOT SEASON: SERAPH). The landmark 100th issue will set the stage for David Hine (THE DARKNESS: FOUR HORSEMEN, BULLETPROOF COFFIN) and Jeremy Haun (ARTIFACTS, DETECTIVE COMICS) as they bring THE DARKNESS into Top Cow’s REBIRTH initiative.

“Why couldn’t they have hired someone else? Anyone else? I’ve been successfully pulling the wool over Darkness readers’ eyes for years now, and the second they get a look at what David Hine is up to they’re going to forget all about my dog and pony show,” Hester commented. “Don’t believe me? Crack open Hine and Kane’s BULLETPROOF COFFIN and see one of tomorrow’s classics while it’s fresh, then get in line behind me for The Darkness #101.”

As Darkness bearer, Jackie Estacado is on a collision course with the source of his power and misery — the Darkness itself! Estacado has traveled through numerous levels of the Darkness’ home dimension in his quest to confront his patron, all the while the Darkness has sought to bind him, distract him and prevent him from reaching it. Now only one of them will walk away from this momentous battle that has been building for years!

Featuring covers by Image luminaries TODD McFARLANE (SPAWN) and MICHAEL GOLDEN (The ‘Nam, SPAWN), alongside THE DARKNESS series artists JEREMY HAUN (Detective Comics) and MICHAEL BROUSSARD (ARTIFACTS).

The over-sized 48-page The Darkness #100 issue will be on sale in stores and digital platforms on March 21st, 2012 and will carry a cover price of $4.99. To commemorate this achievement, the issue will also feature a complete series cover gallery, a Darkness timeline, the winners of the Darkness II deviantART contest and a special preview of Darkness #101.

The Darkness II: Confession on Free Comic Book Day

Exclusive comic prequel to the upcoming supernatural horror video game

New York, NY – April 4, 2011 – 2K Games, Top Cow Productions, Inc., and the Free Comic Book Day Committee announced today that they have teamed up to produce The Darkness II: Confession, an exclusive comic tie-in for The Darkness II video game, for Free Comic Book Day. The 32-page, full-color comic will be a prequel to 2K Games’ upcoming video game, The Darkness II. Produced by Top Cow’s lead artists and writers in partnership with 2K Games, The Darkness II: Confession will be distributed by Diamond Comic Distributors to thousands of independent comic book stores worldwide on May 7, 2011.

“Top Cow has always supported Free Comic Book Day and this year we’ve created our best offering yet with The Darkness II: Confession, a prequel to the upcoming video game The Darkness II by 2K Games,” said self-proclaimed hardcore gamer and president of Top Cow, Matt Hawkins. “In working closely with 2K Games on the comic, we’ve ensured that everything fits into The Darkness’ canon for long-time and new fans of Jackie Estacado. This free comic is a perfect primer for the game.”

Since its inception in 2002, the Free Comic Book Day event has celebrated the original American comic book art form by supplying thousands of participating independent comic book specialty shops around the world with free comic books for fans. Top Cow has participated as a publisher since the beginning and has given out over half a million free comics through the event, including The Darkness which has appeared in a number of previous Free Comic Book Day offerings such as Artifacts #0, Broken Trinity #0 and First Born: Conception. This year, Top Cow is a Silver Sponsor of Free Comic Book Day 2011, The Darkness II: Confession will be based on a story created by Top Cow’s Matt Hawkins and Filip Sablik, written by Filip Sablik (Pilot Season: Alibi, Last Mortal), feature art by Artifacts team Michael Broussard and Sunny Gho, and a cover by Matt Timson (Impaler, The Darkness).

The Darkness II: Confession introduces comic fans, video game fans, and new readers to Jackie Estacado, the bearer of The Darkness, an ancient primal force which acts a blessing and a curse for its bearer, allowing him access to an otherworldly dimension and control over the demons that dwell there. The Darkness II: Confession takes readers from Jackie’s origins in the first video game, through his rise to power, and the events leading up to The Darkness II.

The Darkness II video game breaks out of the sea of conventional first-person shooters with its fervid Quad-Wielding gameplay, which will allow players to slash, grab, and throw objects and enemies with their Demon Arms while simultaneously firing two weapons. The game is layered with the use of dark versus light, steeped in deep and twisted storytelling, and engulfed in stylistic violence that is visualized through a hand-painted graphic noir technique that stays true to its comic book origins.

The Darkness II: Confession and The Darkness II video game are based on the supernatural horror comic book series created by Top Cow. The Darkness II video game will be coming to the Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system from Microsoft, PlayStation®3 computer entertainment system and Windows PC in fall 2011. The Darkness II is not yet rated by the ESRB. For more information on The Darkness II, please visit www.embracethedarkness.com. Review – Artifacts #4

Bookmark and Share

Artifacts #4 COVA_stampedWe’re four issues into this Top Cow event and the first chapter has come to a close.  Artifacts #4 isn’t bad in any ways, but it’s not something I came away blown away by like the first two issues.  The issue is that point where both sides come together and their first main goal is laid out.  It’s a chapter, and that’s it.  It can’t really stand on it’s own, but as part of that bridge to the second act it works well.

The first chapter of Top Cow’s biggest event concludes!
Artifact bearers from around the globe including Sara Pezzini, bearer of the Witchblade; Jackie Estacado, bearer of The Darkness; Dani Baptiste, bearer of The Angelus; the Magdalena, bearer of the Spear of Destiny; Tom Judge, bearer of the Rapture; and many others have found themselves pulled into an ancient struggle ignited by the kidnapping of Hope Pezzini. And now, the architect of this fateful orchestration is revealed!

Ron Marz is a fantastic writer and the interaction of the characters and some tension that exists is great, but not a whole lot happens.  Again, it doesn’t really stand on it’s own, but it’s just one part of a larger story.

Michael Broussard puts in the fantastic artwork we’d expect and there’s a great mix of action of quiet moments.  The artwork is top notch as always and that’s part of what we expect in a Top Cow book.

On it’s own, it’s hard to recommend this issue, but for those who love Top Cow and are reading Artifacts, it’s a can’t miss chapter.
