Bad Idea expands Cul-De-Sac to Five Issues

Bad Idea has announced that Cul-De-Sac is a hit, selling out a numerous comic shops and close to a distributor level sell out. The publisher has also announced the series is now expanding to five issues and will conclude with an oversized spectacular.

Cul-De-Sac is from writer Mike Carey and art by Jonathan Wayshak and is a take on the vampire tale where kids have to go on the run after discovering their parents are vampires and were hunted down and murdered.

The second issue is on sale September 10 and you can check out our review of the first issue.

Cul-De-Sac

Cul-De-Sac #1 has a great concept and is a solid story but the art is very inconsistent

What lurking evil lies hidden at the end of the cul-de-sac? Nestled in a tucked-away corner of sleepy suburbia, the Kingsley, Herriman and Ortega families seemed like any other close-knit neighbors. So nothing seems amiss when Mrs. Kingsley piles all the neighborhood kids into the family RV for their annual summer camp-out. But in the dark of the woods, she unleashes a grisly, bloodcurdling display, revealing their families’ shocking secret—their parents are vampires and they’re eager to pass on their legacy.

Story: Mike Carey, Doug Wagner
Art: Jonathan Wayshak, Adam Pollina
Color: Mike Spicer
Letterer: Tom Napolitano, Dave Sharpe

Now the children must choose—to join them and revel in their awesome dark powers or live out their lives as mortals. But when they return home, they confront a gruesome scene—their parents dead on the floor, brutally murdered by an elite squad of vampire hunters. And the hunters? They’re looking to finish the job. Now the kids are on the run, chased by vampire hunters, the police, and even a shadowy cabal of their fellow vampires as they search for answers to unlock the secret of what they really are before their fates are sealed forever.

Bad Idea gets Stabby with their latest CGC Slabby

Bad Idea has unveiled a must-see-to-believe version of Cul-De-Sac, that defies logic, reason, and preservation best practices. Introducing the Cul-De-Sac #1 Impaled Edition—a CGC-graded, ultra-limited comic book impaled with a handcrafted wooden stake.

Yes, you read that right. Actual wooden stakes. Actual comic books. How else would you kill a vampire?

In a follow-up to the industry-shattering, infamous invisible comic book, publishing anarchists BAD IDEA have done the unthinkable again—this time submitting unholy, undead comic books for certification. And CGC? They had the guts to grade them.

The monster idea spawned from some hard-hitting, essential questions: If a human can become a vampire, does that mean an animal could, too? Like, what if a dog or a cat was bit, would it become a vampire? And what about inanimate objects? Can a chair become a vampire? Can a comic book!?! If a comic book becomes a vampire, how do you kill it?! I guess you’d have to slab it and then stab a stake through the slab.

And that’s how the CGC-graded Cul-De-Sac #1 Impaled Edition came to life… or undeath.

This blood-soaked collectible masterpiece turned fine art installation took the two companies seven months and required solving a very serious engineering challenge: how to drive a stake through a CGC holder without cracking the case or shattering it into a million pieces.

The result? A limited run of 36 certifiably-cursed and stake-pierced comic books, each a one-of-a-kind art piece that sits upright when leaned against the stake and featuring:

  • An ultra-rare edition of CUL-DE-SAC #1
  • A handcrafted wooden vampire stake perfectly stabbed through the slab
  • A splash of Hollywood special-effects wizard-crafted gore
  • Two tiny vampire bite marks that are evident in every copy
  • CGC certification and grading intact (somehow)

Behind the madness: a three-person team of engineers, a 30-year veteran woodworker, and a Hollywood special effects artist came together to meticulously create each one. What they’ve created is more than a collectible—it’s a statement.

Timed to arrive with Cul-De-Sac #1 on August 6th, the much-anticipated series marks the long-awaited return to comic books of New York Times bestselling writer and master of the macabre, Mike Carey, who is combining his powers with groundbreaking fine art illustrator Jonathan Wayshak to deliver a nightmarish new vision for the horror genre.

These monstrosities are available now on a first come, first served basis. Once they’re gone, they’re gone forever. Because let’s be honest—no one’s crazy enough to do this again.

To secure one before they are all gone simply:

  • Have your local comic book store confirm an order of 500 copies or more of CUL-DE-SAC #1 (lunar code: 0625BD465) with BAD IDEA (siena@badideacorp.com) before Final Order Cutoff, Monday June 30th.
  • The first 36 stores to pledge will secure one (1) exclusive Cul-De-Sac #1 Impaled Edition.
  • All pledges must be authenticated by Bad Idea.

Exclusive Preview: Get a look at “Taarna” from Heavy Metal #1

This week, Heavy Metal returns to comic shops with Heavy Metal #1! After a successful Kickstarter campaign, the magazine is back with the editorial team of Frank Forte, Dave Kelly and Chris Thompson.

Within this anticipated relaunch you’ll find Sergio Gerasi’s gorgeous revitalization of Guido Crepax’s seminal character, Valentina. This new vision of the femme fatale, which is fully authorized by the Crepax estate, was first published by Feltrinelli Editions in late 2024 and will be making its English language debut.

On the original comics front, Michael Conrad will be teaming up with Greek comics legend, Ilias Kyriazis, and letterer Simon Bowland, for an all-new series entitled Millstone. This dark and twisted fantasy tale fully embraces Heavy Metal’s bold, unrestricted style, and is sure to excite readers with its potent storytelling and immersive worldbuilding.

These new titles complement the previously announced line-up, starting with one of the magazine’s original legends, Enki Bilal, who returns for the English language adaptation of his acclaimed BUG series. He’s joined on the European front by previously unseen instalments of Burton & Cyb by Antonio Segura and Jose Ortiz, as well as Vicente SegrellesThe Mercenary. And, in the spirit of introducing American audiences to the freshest European talent, issue #1 will present the English-language debut of Janevsky’s cult sci-fi heroine, Sixella, in an original story, The Last Roots.

This special collector’s edition release of Heavy Metal #1 also comes with a variety of cover options, including the standard Greg Hildebrandt and Frank Frazetta covers – as well as a handy Blank Sketch edition to commission your favorite artist – plus three brand new covers created exclusively for the direct market. These covers shine a spotlight on some of the interior stories, including Taarna by Tula Lotay, Grimaldi by Keron Grant, and Sixella by hot French newcomer Janevsky!

For those who love the 1981 cult classic animated film, Heavy Metal will showcase some of their most famous faces in a series of new stories. There will be special one-shot tales of Cold Dead War by Craig Wilson, Grimaldi by Keron Grant, and Legends of Taarna by Joseph Michael Linsner – as well as the debut of Taarna’s ongoing adventures, which will continue in each issue. Written by Leah Moore and John Reppion, with art by rising star Anna Morozova, colors by Ellie Wright, and letters by Tom Napolitano, this will be the definitive take on Taarna, which sets and establishes her character beyond the film and going forward. Forget what came before, here is your chance to get in on the ground floor.

Bridging the gap between European and American audiences is DC Comics superstar, Fernando Dagnino Guerra, who brings a new series of interconnected, yet stand-alone, cyberpunk shorts to the magazine – starting with Lester, That Old Feeling. Dagnino’s sci-fi splendor has most recently been seen within the pages of Blade Runner for Titan Comics, and these new stories represent a major leap forward in his futuristic storytelling abilities. Alongside these European classics and recognizable Heavy Metal characters, issue #1 will also feature the return of classic strips such as The Bus by Paul Kirchner and June 2050 by John Workman – plus a brand-new horror short, Transcendestiny, by acclaimed masters of horror, David Quinn and Tim Vigil; a tale of the Kecksburg UFO by Jim Rugg and a new story by Jonathan Wayshak.

All of that is in addition to a host of great editorial features, interviews, and coverage!

We have an  exclusive six-page preview of Taarna that you can check out below. Then, head to your local comic shop so you don’t miss the return of Heavy Metal!
