Hero Initiative Brings Seven Exclusive Guests to Baltimore Comic-Con 2026

Hero Initiative, the charity that helps comic book creators in medical or financial need, will host seven amazing creators at its booth at the 2026 Baltimore Comic-Con, September 25-27, 2026 at the Baltimore Convention Center. Tickets can be purchased online now!

Founder of the legacy indy comic book publisher and studio Devil’s Due, Josh Blaylock is not only a prolific comic book writer and artist, but an expert in licensing and pop culture trends. He began publishing comics while still a teenager, rising to fame six years later with the license acquisition and resurrection of G.I. JoeVoltron, and other classic properties in the comic space, to huge success. The first of their kind, his comics launched a nostalgia wave that is still felt to this day, and pioneered a trend of independent publishers seizing the spotlight by revitalizing major licensed brands. He is most known for his supernatural action comic Mercy Sparx, and the world of characters surrounding it (currently in development as a major motion picture), with several other creations translated into toys, film, and television. Having published and written over 1,000 comic books with over $70 million in sales, Josh also regularly collaborates on projects in entertainment, fashion, and tech, including for North Coast Music Fest, Adidas, Pixel Vault, Hannibal Buress, Diplo, 0n1 Force, A System of a Down, Louis the Child, and more. His non-fiction book, How to Self-Publish Comics: Not Just Create Them, was made required reading at Savannah College of Art & Design.

Chicago cartoonist Jeffrey Brown is an Eisner Award winner best known for his bestselling Star Wars graphic novels, including Jedi Academy and the NY Times #1 bestseller Darth Vader and Son. Brown’s comics career began while he was pursuing his MFA at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago when he abandoned painting to write and draw his first graphic memoir, Clumsy. He has written dozens of Star WarsBatmanMarvel Super Hero, and other graphic novels. His newest book is Hulk Teach 2: A Tale of Two Teachers.

Peter Krause has worked as an artist in comics for nearly forty years. His credits include Power of SHAZAM!Metropolis S.C.U., and Star Trek: The Next Generation — all for DC Comics. His work with writer Mark Waid on Irredemable (BOOM! Studios) and Daredevil: Road Warrior (Marvel Comics) garnered several Eisner nominations. Krause helped reimagine the Archie gang as teens during World War ll in Archie: 1941, and drew the adventures of two disparate superhero universes in Dragonfly and Dragonflyman for Ahoy Comics.

Along with writers Mark Russell and Bryce Ingman, Krause created the superhero spoof My Bad for Ahoy Comics. He also drew Blacking Out, a modern noir mystery written by Chip Mosher that was published through Kickstarter.

More recently, Krause has drawn a number of EC stories for Oni/Lion Forge. He is currently finishing the art chores on another Mosher-written crime story.

Laura Martin is one of the comics industry’s most lauded colorists. Recipient of Harvey, Eisner, Eagle, Squiddy, and Comics Buyer’s Guide Awards, Martin is regularly assigned high-profile and event-oriented comics on which to bring her palate to bear. Her work can be found in DC, Marvel, Image, Dark Horse, Virgin, and CrossGen comics through the years, and she is lately working on Bad Idea’s Eniac, DC’s Nubia: Queen of the Amazons, and Marvel’s Hulk.

Born in Los Angeles, California, Tone Rodriguez got his start in comics drawing on Violent Messiahs and Snake Plissken for Image Comics. His work followed at Dark Horse, Top Cow, and Crossgen, on dozens of books from ShadowHawkKISS, and Conan the Barbarian.

He’s shown how diverse his work is by joining the folks in Springfield drawing The Simpsons and Futurama Comics for Bongo.

He also contributed to many TV projects, creating the look of The Dark Defender and creating the artwork for the comic book character on Showtime’s Dexter TV show and The Adventures of Jimmy Halpert comic for NBC’s The Office.

His most recent work has him working on the critically acclaimed Stray Dogs for Image Comics and is one of the artists on Feral, a comic book about a rabies outbreak told from the point of view of the feline.

Currently living in Louisiana, he’s a contributor to multiple small press projects such as Tremors (a comic book based on the 90’s movie franchise).

Bob Wiacek has worked with many great talents such as Stan Lee, Steve Ditko, Gene Colan, John and Sal Buscema, Walter Simonson, Frank Miller, Barry Windsor-Smith, George Perez, Jerry Ordway, Paul Smith, Dave Cockrum, John Byrne, Don Heck, Ron Garney, June Brigman, Colleen Doran, plus many others. He has inked Mike Grell on The Legion of Super Heroes #220 and Al Milgrom on Marvel Presents #7-The Guardians of the Galaxy for Marvel. From that time on, he has inked every major title for Marvel, including The X-MenSpider-ManThorIron ManCaptain AmericaHulkShe-HulkMan-ThingStar WarsSilver Surfer, and Fantastic Four just to name a few. At DC, he worked on SupermanBatmanGreen LanternBrave and the BoldThe RayBatman FamilyJustice SocietyShazam, and Challengers of the Unknown, which is a small sampling as well. As far as independent publishers, he did work for Dark Horse, Image, Relium Media, Archie, and Valiant, where he worked on Archer and ArmstrongBloodshot, and Solar. He has inked noteworthy issues in titles including Uncanny X-MenX-FactorStar WarsIron ManBatman, and Bloodshot. On the Iron Man 2020 project, he co-plotted with Walter Simonson, penciled and inked the book (with an able assist from Will Rosado). Of late, Wiacek has helped out inking All-New Wolverine and a JLA General Mills comic which was available in different cereal boxes. He has also inked Badger #1 for First Comics, Stars End #2 from Insane Comics, pencilled and inked the cover to ZaZa the Mystic, and will be working on an Indie project soon with Ron Wilson and Arvell Jones. Outside of comics, he starred in a commercial with rap group G-Unit in 2003, and has a small part in the independent film Manos: The Rise of Torgo, for which he did the poster.

Chuck Wojtkiewicz (Voit-KEV-itch) has been active in the world of comics, concept art, and storyboards since the early 80’s. Yep, he’s old as dirt! His best stretch in comics was at DC on Justice League International and various fill-ins, etc. He also worked for Marvel (Imperial Guard), Dark Horse, Image, and more. Falling into a full-time job at storied Blur Studio as Lead Concept Artist, he spent 14 years working on an endless parade of projects including Star Wars: The Old Republic, Kids WB!, Crimson SkiesThe Goon Movie Kickstarter Storyboard Animatic, and the Deadpool movie. Since then, he and his lovely wife Marc have moved from LA to scenic Whidbey Island in Washington, where he freelanced on a couple of Gears of War projects and full comics art for Story Attic’s Scrollon line of stories. Dick Tracy Collection - Back in Print Softcovers 1961-1964

Publisher: Clover Press
Creative Team: Chester Gould
Launch Date: Funding Now – ends May 29 2026 12:00 AM EDT
Risk: Low – The publisher has run previous campaigns and delivered

Dick Tracy debuted in newspapers on Sunday, October 4, 1931 and was written and drawn almost entirely by creator Chester Gould until 1977. Through Gould’s nearly five decades of dedication on the strip, he created a pantheon of eclectic supporting characters like Pruneface, The Mole, Flattop, and Tess Trueheart that make Tracy the beloved character he is today. The Library of American Comics remastered and collected the strip in a series of hardcover collections, many of which are out of print and highly sought after. Now Clover Press and the Library of American Comics are bringing the collections back to print in an affordable softcover format with Dick Tracy: 1961-1964, featuring Gould’s iconic early 60s strips. Backers will receive all four volumes at once, as well as commemorative prints of each of the covers by Cat Staggs, Brent Schoonover, Howie Noel, and Daniel Hillyard.

The new softcover will collect the strip strictly by year, reprinting each installment from January 1 to December 31. Each volume will measure 11″ x 8.5″ in a horizontal format and will slide into a vertical slipcase, designed for protection and easy shelving. Each year’s collection will also feature a new cover by a diverse selection of contemporary artists.

Backers will receive all four volumes at once and can choose from different tiers and add-ons with a multitude of incredible extra rewards, including a sticker pack, trading cards, and a lithograph including art by Chester Gould featured in the New York Sunday News. Backers who pledge within the first 48 hours to “The Early Bird Edition” tier will receive a discount and an exclusive bookmark featuring art by Brent Schoonover.

Small Press Expo announces more special guests

Small Press Expo has revealed even more Special Guests for SPX 2024. The show takes place on Saturday September 14 and Sunday September 15 with programming and workshops about the amazing world of independent comics and an exhibitor floor with over 500 creators.

Additional Special Guests will be announced over the next few weeks.

Jeffrey Brown

New York Times bestselling author Jeffrey Brown (Darth Vader & SonLoved and Lost, Jedi Academy) gets back to his autobo roots (sort of?) with a new collection of bizarre statements from and interactions with his youngest son, Simon.

Kids Are Still Weird, a follow up of sorts to Kids Are Weird (about his older son, Oscar) that will debut at SPX! Come say hi to Jeffrey and get Simon Says, a risograph mini-comic of bonus material free with purchase of the book.

Lonnie Millsap

Special Guest Lonnie Millsap, will be signing copies of his latest book, titled ‘My Owners Were Chewy!’. ‘Chewy’ is a collection of humorous, single paneled cartoons that are laugh out loud funny. Millsap will also be signing prints of his work from the book and prints of his New Yorker cartoons.

Stan Mack

Stan Mack drew a comic strip every week for decades based on what he saw and heard in his native New York City, famously using verbatim dialogue for his graphic dramatizations.

A mixture of humor, spontaneity, serendipity, and weirdness, Mack’s comic strip snapshots caught New Yorkers — whether it is an extortionist calligrapher, a baby evading arrest at her first protest, a stroll up Broadway with a ferret, an evening with a male liberationist, or an unlucky-in-love dolphin trainer — being who they are in all their unguarded and uninhibited glory. He’ll be signing copies of Stan Mack’s Real Life Funnies: The Collected Conceits, Delusions, and Hijinks of New Yorkers from 1974 to 1995 at the Fantagraphics booth!

Laura Pérez

We are thrilled that, thanks to the generosity of Spain Arts & Culture, Laura Pérez is a Special Guest at SPX 2024! She’ll be discussing and signing copies of Ocultos from Fantagraphics, an entrancing collection of graphic short stories explores the occult forces that touch upon our everyday lives.

Celebrated for her previous graphic novel, Totem, Spanish comics artist Laura Pérez presents another entrancing vision of magic and mystery. Artfully rendered in her signature wispy, atmospheric pencil lines punctuated by splashes of color, Ocultos is a spiritual, reflective work that will leave you spellbound.ianate storytelling that draws on stylistic elements found in illuminated manuscripts. A poetic and evocative exploration of destiny and survival.

Chris Gooch

Chris Gooch will be traveling from Melbourne, Australia to promote his recent graphic novel In Utero from Top Shelf. He will also be signing his previous three books with Top Shelf, Bottled (2017), Deep Breaths (2019) and Under-Earth (2020).

‘In Utero’ follows twelve years after a disastrous explosion, young Hailey is dropped off by her mum at a holiday camp in a dilapidated shopping mall. Alienated from the other kids, she connects with an eerie older teen named Jen… but soon dark horrors awaken, and the two new friends are caught up in a cataclysmic battle between two terrifying creatures who have been lying dormant all this time.

One of Australia’s most acclaimed young graphic novelists, Chris Gooch expertly crafts a taut and intimate thriller about mothers and daughters, the monstrous and the mundane, and the power of friendship in the midst of catastrophe.

Walter Scott

When Wendy is nominated for the coveted National FoodHut Contemporary Art Prize, all of her millennial dreams seem to be coming true. But not even achieving bona fide art star fame can hide the truth: a never-ending struggle with imposter syndrome. After she cracks in an online interview and gets dragged in the comments section, she heads straight to a local watering hole to drown her sorrows.

Walter Scott’s, ‘The Wendy Award’ from Drawn & Quarterly, incisively skewers the art world with its corporate overlords, performative activism, generational wealth, and weaponized therapy speak—a showcase of Walter Scott’s deft wit and social commentary. Walter Scott is an interdisciplinary artist working in comics, drawing, video, performance, and sculpture. Scott is Kanien’keha:ka from the Kahnawake Mohawk nation.

Sig Burwash

Sig Burwash is a visual artist whose practice includes watercolor, collage, ceramics, animation, illustration, and comics. They have had their works exhibited in the United States, Europe and Canada, where they live on Cape Breton Island.

Sig attended the Centre for Cartoon Studies to work on their debut graphic novel, Vera Bushwack from Drawn & Quarterly. The uniquely emotive pastel pages follow a journey of rage, joy, and self-acceptance in the rustic landscape of Nova Scotia. This is Sig’s first time attending SPX.
