SPX 2016 Announces Special Guests Lisa Hanawalt, Jeffrey Brown, Charles Burns and Sarah Glidden

spx-logo-240Small Press Expo has announced Lisa Hanawalt, Jeffrey Brown, Charles Burns, and Sarah Glidden as special guests for SPX 2016. These guests are in addition those previously announced for the 40th Anniversary of Fantagraphics celebration; Daniel Clowes, Carol Tyler, Jim Woodring, Drew Friedman, Jaime & Gilbert Hernandez, Ed Piskor, SPX first timer Trina Robbins, and a rare festival appearance by Joe Sacco.

Hot Dog Taste Test serves up Lisa Hanawalt’s devastatingly funny comics, saliva-stimulating art, and deliciously screwball lists as she skewers the pomposities of foodie subculture. From the James Beard award-winning cartoonist and production designer/producer of Bojack Horseman, Hot Dog Taste Test from Drawn & Quarterly dishes out five-star laughs, as Hanawalt keenly muses on pop culture, relationships, and the animal in all of us.

Jeffrey Brown is the bestselling author of Darth Vader and Son as well as the Jedi Academy series from Scholastic Books. He began his comics career with Clumsy and other autobiographical comics that chronicled everyday awkward and intimate moments from life. His new book, Lucy & Andy Neanderthal from Random House Kids, is a heavily researched middle grade story about prehistoric cavemen kids. He lives in Chicago with his wife and sons.

Charles Burns is renown for his epic graphic novel Black Hole, for which he won the Eisner, Ignatz and Harvey Awards. In addition to work in set design, posters and advertising, he has worked for such periodicals as Raw, The Believer and The New Yorker. SPX 2016 will see the debut of Last Look from Penguin Random House, which presents the Nitnit Trilogy of the previously published X’ed Out, The Hive and Sugar Skull in one volume.

Cartoonist Sarah Glidden accompanies her two friends—reporters and founders of journalism non-profit—as they research potential stories on the effects of the Iraq War on the Middle East and, specifically, the war’s refugees. Joining the trio is a childhood friend and former Marine whose past service in Iraq adds an unexpected and sometimes unwelcome viewpoint, both to the people they come across and perhaps even themselves. The group travels across Turkey, Iraq, and Syria, with Glidden’s observations resulting in her latest book, Rolling Blackouts, that will debut at SPX 2016 is published by Drawn & Quarterly.  Glidden (How to Understand Israel in 60 Days or Less) records all that she encounters with a sympathetic and searching eye. Painted in her trademark soft, muted watercolors and written with a self-effacing humor, Rolling Blackouts cements Glidden’s place as one of today’s most original nonfiction voices.

In the next few weeks, SPX will announce the international guests coming from all over the world to attend the show, the 2016 Ignatz nominees and a full slate of programming.

SPX 2016 takes place on Saturday and Sunday, September 17-18, and will have over 650 creators, 280 exhibitor tables and 22 programming slots to entertain, enlighten and introduce attendees to the amazing world of independent and small press comics.

Patrick McHale and Jim Campbell Return for New Over the Garden Wall Comic Series

KaBOOM!, an imprint of BOOM! Studios, and Cartoon Network Enterprises, the licensing and merchandising arm of the network, are pleased to announce that Patrick McHale and Jim Campbell have teamed up once again for a new, four-issue Over the Garden Wall limited comic series. Last November, Cartoon Network debuted McHale’s eerily sweet Over the Garden Wall, its first original animated miniseries, about half-brothers Wirt and Greg trying to find their way home. KaBOOM! published a companion one-shot that was eagerly snapped up by fans, selling out immediately.

It’s a new Over the Garden Wall story set between episodes 3 and 4 of the animated series. Wirt and Greg are trying to hitch a ride out of schooltown but end up having to walk. Soon, they come upon two girls playing, and wind up having to keep them entertained so that they don’t wake their giant father!

Headlined by an all-star voice-cast that includes Elijah Wood, Collin Dean, and Melanie Lynskey, Over the Garden Wall is Cartoon Network’s first-ever miniseries, an animated comedy/fantasy story about two brothers, Wirt and Greg, who are trapped in a mysterious world. In this 10-part production, music plays an important role with a soundtrack full of Americana-influenced original songs. A DVD collecting all of the episodes will be released on September 8. Over the Garden Wall is created by Patrick McHale and produced by Cartoon Network Studios.

Over the Garden Wall #1 (of 4) arrives in comic shops on August 26th with a main cover by series artist Jim Campbell for the price of $3.99 under Diamond order code JUN151090. Also available in a limited quantity is a subscription variant by Adventure Time storyboard artist Steve Wolfhard, a 10 Years incentive cover by Jeffrey Brown, and a retailer incentive cover by creator Patrick McHale.

The Final Order Cutoff deadline for retailers is August 3rd.

SPX 2012 – Thoughts on the Show and Books to Review

Small Press Expo 2012 has come and gone and while I didn’t spend long there, about 4 hours, I made it around the floor multiple times and picked up a thick stack of books to review (and some original art). The show was packed with all types of people across the age spectrum. Folks are reporting this was a great show, and you could see it. Indie comics are booming if this is any indication.

The books on the show floor were varied and there was something for everyone, but here’s what I picked up, in no particular order.

Comic: Burning Building Comix
Creator: Jeff Zwrek

This graphic novel is read a bit differently, telling the story one floor at a time in a burning building. The concept is cool and execution fun. The design is what sold me and this is a book I haven’t seen another example of in it’s execution. Hopefully the interior is as creative as the exterior concept.

Comic: Johnny Hiro
Creator: Fred Chao

I was sold with the words “honor-bound business ronin.” I’m still not 100% sure what the comic is about, but the art is solid and beautiful to look at. I flipped through some pages and it looks really entertaining.

Comic: The Accidental Candidate: The Rise and Fall of Alvin Greene

Creator: Corey Hutchins and David Axe – writer, Blue Delliquanti – art

The story of South Carolina Senate candidate Alvin Greene that came out of no where. This was the political story for a solid month and it’s a book I’ve wanted to get my hands on since I heard it was released.

Comic: Nathan Sorry
Creator: Rich Barrett

I picked up both volumes which follows a man who’s on the run after he steals $20 million post 9/11. The art was cool and story intriguing. It seemed like an easy buy for me.

Comic: Infinity Roads Vol. 1
Creator: Tim Sparvero

A science fiction story about a man who has created a life in his dreams where he’s fallen in love. The story description is a bit weird and that sold me. Should be an interesting read.

Comic: The Less Than Epic Adventures of TJ and Amal
Creator: E.K. Weaver

Two guys head cross country from Berkeley to Providence. The story seems to be a coming of age sort of thing and the interior art hooked me. I seriously have no idea what to expect with this.

Comic: Between Gears
Creator: Natalie Nourigat

This is the type of book that hooks me, an autobiographical comic detailing Nourigat’s last year at the University of Oregon. Don’t know why, but I find these types of books fascinating and the art looked solid. An easy sale to me.

Comic: Afrodisiac
Creator: Jim Rugg and Brian Maruca

The art has this throwback 70s look and it’s a blaxploitation comic, sold.

Comic: The Deadbeat
Creator: Jeremy Massie

A story about a down on his luck superhero and his estranged daughter. It’s a story I thought about writing (well something close) so very interested in reading this.

Comic: Lower East Side Story #1-3
Creator: Peter Friedrich

Friedrich decided to take a look at the gentrification of the Lower East Side of New York City. He had photos to show what it looked like and his comic is pretty well researched in how it happened.

Comic: Old-Timey Hockey Tales
Creator: Robert Ullman and Jeffrey Brown

I’m a fan of hockey, nuff said.
