It’s here! The greatest Valiant milestone of all time!

After unleashing a massive cast of 50 leading talents for the largest ever jam cover in comics history, Valiant is now proud to unveil the next massive revelation for X-O Manowar #50 – a colossal, 64-page anniversary spectacular crash-landing in stores everywhere this September!

For centuries, the sacred X-O Manowar has stood unrivaled as the universe’s most powerful weapon. Today, will it equal Earth’s doom? An unthinkable alien race known only as The Torment has come to our world in search of the armor’s secrets. Now, they stand opposed by Aric of Dacia – former slave, noble warrior, resolute king, and current master of the armor’s near-limitless capabilities. But are one man…and one weapon…enough to repel a force capable of leveling a thousand civilizations?

A whole new era for X-O Manowar begins here…and you won’t believe what’s coming next!

First: the seismic final story arc, “LONG LIVE THE KING,” goes out in a world-shaking blaze of glory with New York Times best-selling writer and longtime scribe Robert Venditti and extraordinary artists Joe Bennett and Roberto de la Torre manning the front line, alongside an all-star battalion of artists from across X-O Manowar‘s landmark 56-issue run: Cary Nord, Doug Braithwaite, Diego Bernard, Rafa Sandoval, and Robert Gill!

Spanning X-O Manowar’s five-year-long impact on the people of Earth, and setting the stage for star-spanning adventures yet to come in 2017 and beyond, no comic book fan can afford to miss the ultimate cosmic battle for the fate of Valiant’s most powerful hero!

Then: From all corners, the Valiant Universe assembles to salute X-O Manowar’s unparalleled impact as one of the longest running superhero series in comics today with all-new, never-before-seen tales and tributes from Jody Houser & Javier Pulido, Matt Kindt & Tomas Giorello, Philip Tan, and more along the way!

Review: She-Hulk #8

shulky8Marvel Comics’ She-Hulk is clearly written by an attorney who has an appreciation for superhero universes. There is so much expertly written jargon and procedure, and so much fun and elegantly done crossover into other aspects of the Marvel University. Yes, Charles Soule was born to write this book, so praise the dork gods this isn’t one of the books he’s leaving. This issue starts the coolest idea imaginable for this book, a San Francisco court room show-off between She-Hulk and Daredevil, the former of which defending Steve Rogers from a 1940s wrongful death accusation. It’s a good start to this three-issue arc, doing its job without being anything great.

Soule smartly decides to hold off on the majority of the details behind this case in this debut issue, creating just enough intrigue to entice but not frustrate with an abundance of ambiguity. Pieces of the case are teased, and the whole thing certainly looks to be compelling. The characterization of Rogers is spot on, casting him as a noble, morally-strong old man. This story takes place following Rick Rememder’s big saga that made Rogers an old man, and it just works for this story. Seeing this sweet old man, who She-Hulk’s workers constantly swoon over, is just warm and vaguely cute.

The story here does its job, but it’s unfortunately nothing too special so far. No one moment is particularly exciting, and the slow reveal that Daredevil is her rival in the court room is obvious and a tad dull. The art here is great, with loads of color and lots of clean, cute expression. Javier Pulido‘s art is perfect for this book, tonally spot-on for this fun and sometimes serious comic and effective for both action bits and calmer stuff. Again, no page is particularly striking, but it’s quality stuff. It’s a funny book too, which is in part thanks to the visuals.

She-Hulk #8 reads most of all like a solid tease into what I’m sure is going to be great. It’s not quite there yet, but this still entertains.

Review: She-Hulk #1

She-Hulk_1_CoverLawyer. Avenger. Hero. Friend. Jennifer Walters has been called many things – but to most, she’s known only as the She-Hulk! Savior of the world on more than one occasion, Jennifer Walters is embarking on a brand new, and no less dangerous mission – opening a new law practice!

Since it’s announcement, there’s one series that’s been on top of my list that I’ve been looking forward to reading and this is it. Written by Charles Soule with art by Javier Pulido, the series had high expectations by me and thankfully the series met every single one of them.

Mixed with humor and a little action, the series shares more with recent Marvel hits such as Hawkeye and Daredevil than it does with the other superhero comics they produce. There isn’t tons of punching, it’s there, but this is more about She-Hulk/Jennifer’s day to day life more than anything else.

Soule cracked early on during the lead up to the series that She-Hulk will battle her greatest villain, scheduling, and he wasn’t kidding. In this first issue she juggles her career and the fact she’s a green ass-kicking machine, one doesn’t exactly help with the other and it’s not like she can separate the two. That all mixes up resulting in hilarity and entertainment and one of my favorite new comics of the new year.

That’s in part due to Pulido’s art which has a vibe reminiscent of Mike Allred, the artist in the previous series that featured She-Hulk, FF. The look matches the tone of the series, a great match.

Caseloads and kicking bad guy butt is a complicated business and Soule seems to have that down, mixing in humor on top of it all. You can make all the lawyer jokes you’d like, but it’s hard to not like this jade champion of justice. I highly recommend it.

Preview: Smash Into a First Look at the All-New She-Hulk #1!

Lawyer. Avenger. Hero. Friend. Jennifer Walters has been called many things – but to most, she’s known only as the She-Hulk! Today, Marvel has released a first look at She-Hulk #1 – the all-new ongoing series written by rising star Charles Soule and drawn by fan-favorite artist Javier Pulido!  Savior of the world on more than one occasion, Jennifer Walters is embarking on a brand new, and no less dangerous mission – opening a new law practice!

In an interview with Marvel.com, Soule said:

One of the big themes I’m going to play with is how in the world Jennifer is supposed to do everything she’s supposed to do. We don’t want things to be easy for our heroes—we want to see them overcome great difficulties. She-Hulk will battle one of the greatest villains of all: scheduling.

But She-Hulk will fight her share of giant robots and irradiated monsters, I promise.

But juggling her caseload and kicking bad guy butt might be a bit more complicated than she imagines. Not to mention the growing number of supervillains she’s making personal enemies of. Sure she can knock The Thing out in one punch, but this time she may have bit off more than she can chew! And that’s just the start of it. Don’t miss a new beginning for the jade champion of justice when She-Hulk #1 smashes into comic shops this February!

Letter 44 #1 Sells Out!

A new President, freshly inaugurated and faced with an impossible scenario, a spaceship full of American heroes flung far across our solar system, unsure of whom or what will greet them, and a lone structure of unknown origin floating untouched in the vacuum of space.

These are but a few of the elements that have led to the maiden voyage of Charles Soule and Alberto Jiménez Alburqurque’s Letter 44 #1 to sell out of its initial 22,000 copy print run!

Riding high atop its unique premise and eye-catching art, Letter 44 #1 premiered in a special black and white variant edition at San Diego Comic-Con earlier this year, fueling fans’ desire for the series to finally premiere with Guy Major’s vivid colors. Fans and retailers responded thunderously, depleting Diamond Comics Distributors’ stock of the specially priced $1 issue in less than a day.

Holding its introductory price of $1, Letter 44 #1 will be receiving a second printing with a new cover by superstar artist Javier Pulido, scheduled to hit shelves on November 27th, the same day as Letter 44 #2!

Lawyer Charles Soule to Write Lawyer She-Hulk for Marvel

This February, She-Hulk makes her All-New Marvel NOW! debut in a bombastic new series from critically acclaimed creative team of Charles Soule and Javier Pulido! The fact that Soule is a practicing lawyer makes this a series to keep your eye on. His personal knowledge will help bring some extra authenticity to her day to day, and he’s proven he can handle action too.

Jennifer Walters is an Avenger, member of the FF, savior of the world on more than one occasion, and has a pile of degrees. Not to mention being 7-feet tall with a right hook strong enough to take out The Thing. But even her big brains and bigger brawn might not be enough for to tackle her full case load and kicking some bad-guy butt.

With a brand new practice, new paralegal, and a mounting number of personal enemies both super-powered and not, She-Hulk may have bitten off a bit more than she can chew…but hey, she just calls that Tuesday. Look for Jennifer’s All-New Marvel NOW! debut when She-Hulk #1 hits this February!
