New agents. New mission. The rest is classified.

MIND MGMT: NEW AND IMPROVED #1

FORT PSYCHO #1 (of 12)

Written by Matt Kindt
Art & Cover by Brian Hurtt

Ten years ago, the nation of Singapore sank into the Pacific Ocean. The underground terrorist network known as The Seven Seals took credit for the largest act of terror in human history. In the aftermath, the United Nations created a strike team of highly trained covert operatives with one mission: locate, identify, and eliminate The Seven Seals’ secretive leader.

The team’s clandestine affairs were to always remain in the shadows – until their final, explosive confrontation with The Seven Seals resulted in a large-scale tragedy too bloody to cover up and too tragic to ignore. Disgraced and disavowed by the governments that trained them, the world’s most dangerous secret agents have been convicted for their crimes and sentenced to serve time side-by-side in the one place capable of holding them: their old island headquarters, Fort Cyclone – now known in the media by the derogatory nickname “Fort Psycho.”

And that’s where the official story is about to go terribly, terribly wrong.

From master storytellers Matt Kindt (BRZKR, Mind MGMT) and Brian Hurtt (The Sixth Gun), MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE meets LOST on a tropical island paradise stocked with trained killers, secret betrayals, and the long-buried truth about the mission that brought them there. Always remember: There is nothing deadlier than an ally turned enemy.

Graphic Policy’s Top Comic Picks this Week!

Wednesdays (and Tuesdays) are new comic book day! Each week hundreds of comics are released, and that can be pretty daunting to go over and choose what to buy. That’s where we come in

Each week our contributors choose what they can’t wait to read this week or just sounds interesting. In other words, this is what we’re looking forward to and think you should be taking a look at!

Find out what folks think below, and what comics you should be looking out for this week.

The Boxer Vol. 6 (Yen Press/IZE Press) – One of the best comics out right now, it’s not about the boxing, it’s about the individuals in and out of the ring.

Chernobyl Fall of Atomgrad (Palazzo Editions) – This graphic and harrowing account of nuclear catastrophe at Chernobyl in April 1986 follows the dozens of human stories cruelly affected by disaster.

Conan the Barbarian #10 (Titan Comics) – The series has delivered with every issue breathing new life into the classic character.

Dawnrunner #2 (Dark Horse) – It’s mech vs. aliens/monsters but there’s something really cool about that first issue that has us excited to check out the second.

Dick Tracy #1 (Mad Cave Studios) – The classic character returns with a hell of a creative team behind it. Can’t wait to see what this new series is like.

Duke #5 (Skybound) – The new take on G.I. JOE has been amazing as we get to see Duke attempt to figure out what’s going on. It’s been a great way to connect the property to Transformers and the greater Energon Universe.

Feral #2 (Image Comics) – The series is cute animals meets a zombie story. The first issue was fantastic and we’re excited to see what’s next.

If You Find This I’m Already Dead #3 (Dark Horse Comics) – The series wraps up and it’s been a hell of a ride. Don’t miss this one about a journalist stuck on an alien world. After the last issue’s reveal, we can’t wait to read this one!

The Penguin #9 (DC Comics) – The series might be about the Penguin’s return to Gotham but it has solidified him as a scary Batman villain.

The Six Fingers #3 (Image Comics) – The series from the perspective of a serial killer has been an interesting spiral into madness.

Ultimate Spider-Man #4 (Marvel) – One of the best comics Marvel is putting out right now. It’s everything that makes Spider-Man good and then some.

Universal Monsters: Creature from the Black Lagoon Lives! #1 (Skybound) – We’re excited to check out the next entry in the return of Universal Monsters to comics! Dracula was so good, we’re hoping this one is close.

If You Find This I’m Already Dead #2 explores an alien world through the eyes of a journalist

If You Find This I’m Already Dead #2 is another fantastic issue as Robin dives deeper into the alien world and we learn more about it.

Mini Reviews: Petrol Head, Sinister Sons, one of the best debuts of the year, and more!

Sinister Sons #1

Sometimes, the staff at Graphic Policy read more comics than we’re able to get reviewed. When that happens you’ll see a weekly feature compiling reviews of the comics, or graphic novels, we just didn’t get a chance to write a full one for.

These are Graphic Policy’s Mini Reviews and Recommendations.

Logan

If You Find This, I’m Already Dead #1 (Dark Horse) – Despite its wordy title, If You Find This I’m Already Dead (IYFTIAD) #1 is a thrilling take on parallel worlds from Matt Kindt, Dan McDaid, and Bill Crabtree. Robin is a reporter joining a US military detachment in another reality called Terminus. Things go FUBAR pretty early, and Robin and soldier Gil instantly go into survival mode. Kindt’s captions feel journalistic, but disappear during confusing and frightening moments like when Robin and Gil get the aid of one of the Terminus natives to try to escape via the sewer. As the story unfolds, it turns into a narrative of oppressor and oppressed just like our own world. There are no clear answers or heroes, and the comic ends on one hell of a cliffhanger. McDaid and Crabtree’s art brings gritty documentary realism to a fantastic environment, and they go for authentic emotions instead of being lost in the trippiness. IYFTIAD is easily one of the strongest first issues I’ve read in 2024. Overall: 9.1 Verdict: Buy

Petrol Head #4 (Image) – Before getting into the continuing adventures of the motley crew Lupa, Sid the Sat Nav (I need him as a GPS voice), Dave, and Petrol Head, Rob Williams and Pye Parr begin Petrol Head #4 with a big picture look at the dystopian world of the comic. Basically, they tested the ozone bubbles on prisoners giving them a chance at freedom before letting them die in isolation. This scene adds a layer of darkness and a sense urgency to Petrol Head #4 as our protagonists scramble around looking for an opening to sprinkle nanobots and cleanse the environment. The tone might be dark, but Parr’s vehicle designs continue to be unique, and Williams’ gallows humor keep the story moving. For example, there’s the racer Hybrid whose only good stat is breaking. Petrol Head #4 definitely has a bleak tone, but it’s counterbalanced by a colorful cast of characters that find the laughs in an apocalyptic surveillance state that seems like a heightened version of our own. Overall: 8.1 Verdict: Buy

Sinister Sons #1 (DC Comics) Peter Tomasi, David Lafuente, and Tamra Bonvillain‘s new series starring the sons of Sinestro and General Zod is a nice little amuse bouche. The basic premise is that Sinson and Lor-Zod want to step out of their father’s shadows and making something for themselves. So far, that something is a lot of posturing and brattiness, but it makes for amusing reading especially with Lafuente’s cartoon-y visuals. Because I’ve been reading Kneel before Zod and not the current Green Lantern series, I have a better handle on Lor-Zod’s character versus Sinson, but Tomasi’s humorous script covers a multitude of sins. I do miss when a #1 on a comic didn’t come with added homework though. Overall: 7.4 Verdict: Read (I purchased a copy on Amazon.)

Fall of the House of X #2 (Marvel) – Overall, I haven’t been a fan of the Krakoan age of the X-Men. The concept, I think, went against the basics of the X-Men, though there was potential. So, I’m reading the “Fall” of that era mostly to see what comes next, hoping it all gets back to the X-Men I enjoyed in the past (and it’s ok if it doesn’t). Fall of the House of X #2 is one half of the closing chapter of this era, delivering the over the top event the X-Men is known for. Good or bad, Fall of the House of X #2 feels a lot like the classic events of the 90s, with a slightly choppy narrative where it feels like key moments are missed in its storytelling and instead the focus is on the spectacle. The issue is full of it, with Polaris front and center kicking ass. The issue overall is entertaining and as a slice of the overall story, it works, but on its own, it feels like an empty summer blockbuster. Overall: 7.0 Verdict: Read

If You Find This I’m Already Dead #1 is a hell of a start

If You Find This I'm Already Dead #1

If You Find This I’m Already Dead #1 kicks off a multi-dimensional cosmic odyssey presented in a pulp magazine-sized format! Robin is a big city reporter, embedded with US Marines heading to the hostile pocket universe called Terminus. Ten minutes in, the entire marine squad is wiped out and she has to survive (and report) on her own. Terminus is full of cosmic wonders-and sci-fi “gods” that are in the middle of a political power struggle. The language is alien, and the politics are deadly. Can she survive long enough to figure out what’s going on and get home to tell the story?

If You Find This I’m Already Dead #1 is a hell of a start. Is that any surprise since it’s written by Matt Kindt? The story takes familiar concepts in new directions building off of “no duh” observations you just don’t see in comics.

Kindt keeps it simple. A journalist in a war zone where the mission they’re embedded on goes fubar and they’re abandoned in a foreign land. In this case it’s a completely alien landscape. And due to all of that, the comic is a triumph. Robin, the journalist, is forced to observe and learn about this world and due that, the reader is forced to as well. Robin’s journey is our journey. Kindt recognizes that Robin isn’t really a stand-in, she’s our stand-in as we get to learn and experience things as she does. The world for all of us is unfamiliar and that’s part of the excitement.

The art helps a lot with this. Dan McDaid does a fantastic job of delivering things that feel new and familiar at the same time. There’s clear influences like Flash Gordon and John Carter of Mars. The world and aliens at times feel like they’d fit in a retro pulp adventure. But, there’s also a lot that feels completely new, different, and… alien. That’s all helped by the color of Bill Crabtree and lettering by Jim Campbell which helps that interesting mix of retro and modern in the look of the comic.

If You Find This I’m Already Dead #1 is a fantastic debut that feels like a more modern version of classic sci-fi pulp. If you’re a fan of Flash Gordon, this is a comic that’s an absolute get and if you just like good comics this is one that shouldn’t be missed.
