AHOY Announces an Exclusive Deal with Diamond and Upcoming Release Dates

Diamond Book Distributors has signed a distribution agreement with AHOY Comics. Diamond Book Distributors will exclusively distribute AHOY Comics trade paperbacks to the traditional book market, while Diamond Comic Distributors will distribute the books to the comic book specialty market.

The independent, Syracuse-based publisher was founded by Hart Seely, an award-winning journalist whose work has been featured in The New York Times and on National Public Radio. In recent weeks, AHOY Comics acquired the publishing rights to the controversial comic book series, Second Coming, the satirical comic book series in which Jesus Christ resumes His Holy Mission. In the series by The New York Times bestselling writer Mark Russell and acclaimed artist Richard Pace, God commands Earth’s mightiest superhero, Sunstar, to accept Jesus Christ as his roommate and teach him how to use His power in a… more powerful way.Second Coming will be released on July 10, ahead of San Diego Comic Con and following the release of the High Heaven trade paperback.

Timed to today’s announcement, AHOY Comics officially announced the release dates for its first three trade paperback collections. The Wrong Earth, the acclaimed superhero satire that introduced fan favorites Dragonfly and Dragonflyman, will be available in book form in comic stores across the country on May 1, ahead of the release of the company’s Free Comic Book Day title entitled Dragonfly and Dragonflyman #1.

Each week our contributors choose what they can’t wait to read this week or just sounds interesting. In other words, this is what we’re looking forward to and think you should be taking a look at!

American Carnage #1 (Vertigo/DC Comics) – When I read this comic way back months ago I thought it was fantastic. I think the same thing today. A cop goes undercover in a hate group. Yeah, pretty relevant.

Black Badge #4 (BOOM! Studios) – This series is insane following Scouts who are also assassins. Over the top awesome.

Go-Bots #1 (IDW Publishing) – The classic toys get their time to shine in this series from Tom Scioli. Scioli = awesome.

High Heaven #3 (AHOY Comics) – The first two issues have been fantastic and AHOY just packs so much into an issue you really feel like you’re getting your money’s worth. An asshole gets sent to Heaven and isn’t happy with it and wants to escape.

Low Road West #3 (BOOM! Studios) – This series blends fantasy and apocalypse and we seriously have no idea where it’s going from here.

Middlewest #1 (Image Comics) – Skottie Young’s new series with art by Jorge Corona. Skottie Young has us sold on this one.

Smooth Criminals #1 (BOOM! Studios) – A story about felonies and friendship and a concept that sounds like a lot of fun.

Spider-Geddon #4 (Marvel) – The event packs so much in and we can’t see how it’s going to wrap up with not too much to go. Marvel is once again knocking it out of the park with its Spider-events.

Uncanny X-Men #2 (Marvel) – The first issue took us back and felt like an old-school X-Men comic from the 90s and we’re all in for this weekly series. The end of the last issue, and it’s mini-stories have us scratching our heads as to what’s next.

Web of Venom: Carnage Reborn #1 (Marvel) – Is Carnage returning? We’ll find out!

Review: High Heaven #2

What’s worse than being sentenced to Hell? For self-pitying David Feathers, it’s an eternity in Paradise, where he runs afoul of a monstrous angel.

Well that’s unexpected. The first issue of High Heaven was a nice send-up of those person goes to Heaven types of stories giving us a miserable lead and a Heaven that reminds us more of Eastern Europe under Communism. Writer Tom Peyer peels back the clouds in High Heaven #2 to reveal those things that didn’t quite seem right in the first issue. Heaven? Yeah, there’s more to it.

David Feathers is still a miserable lead but the second issue shows there’s some truth to his kvetching. Heaven as presented to him does suck but it’s not like he deserves what’s revealed. The world as presented is an interesting one with clear class delineations and austerity has hit where David has been placed. Is there better? Is there worse? Well, we now know the answer to that and that there is indeed some place to escape to.

What’s interesting is the theme of being happy with what you’re given and how we should shut up about it. Even in Heaven this seems to exist and makes for an interesting debate about the meaning of it all and theological implications.

The art by Greg Scott with color by Andy Troy and lettering by Rob Steen is really solid. There’s some big jumps in locations in this issue and some very different designs and feels to some characters but the team makes it all work and flow easily as one world. There’s nothing that seems out of place. It all is rather quick but each panel of what’s revealed had me linger to see what details I could see that adds to the world and story.

That’d be enough to make this a buy….

The surly science-heroes of Hashtag: Danger adopt an alien pet! Yes, there’s a backup comic too also written by Peyer with art by Chris Giarrusso. It’s a twisted story that had me laughing and the weirdness of it all betrays Giarrusso’s style. Think, a real messed up Archie and you get a better idea of what’s presented.

And that’s not all!

There’s prose and Q&As from Carol Lay, Hart Seely, Kek-W, Austin Wilson, and featuring art by Lay, Rick Geary, and Elliott Mattice. All of it is bonus to what’s already a great issue of comics.

It’s another solid issue that feels like it’s even better than the first and has me super excited to see what’s next. AHOY Comics has something special here not just delivering solid main stories but packing so much into each issue that they really feel like you’re getting your money’s worth. Another must get from this upstart publisher.

High Heaven #2 (AHOY Comics) – AHOY Comics is guaranteed entertainment and great value for your dollar. The first issue was twisted in all of the right ways and we want more.

Mars Attacks #1 (Dynamite Entertainment) – Ack. Ack. Ack. Ack. Ack.

Old Lady Harley #1 (DC Comics) – Lets see what DC can do with the concept…

Return of Wolverine #2 (Marvel) – The first issue left us with so many questions but we’re excited to find out more about how Wolverine actually returned.

Scarlet #3 (Jinxworld/DC Comics) – Brian Michael Bendis’ story about a revolutionary in America feels like it’s perfectly timed and needed in today’s world.

Spider-Geddon #2 (Marvel) – The first issue of this event was solid and based on how much fun it was we’re excited for this second issue.

Spider-Girls #1 (Marvel) – A Spider-Geddon tie-in, Mayday parker, Anya Corazon, and Annie May Parker team up and we’re totally in for the adventure.

Whispering Dark #1 (Dark Horse Comics) – A soldier’s helicopter is shot down and behind enemy lines she has to deal with a supernatural horror.

Baltimore Comic Con 2018: Talking Ahoy Comics with Tom Peyer and Stuart Moore

AHOY Comics — the startup publisher that has been asking readers to “expect more” from its comic book magazine format — is made its first ever appearance at Baltimore Comic-Con with took place September 28th to Sunday September 30th.

We got a chance to talk to two original editors of DC Comics’ Vertigo imprint, Tom Peyer and Stuart Moore who each have series at AHOY. Tom is the writer behind The Wrong Earth and High Heaven and Stuart is the writer behind Captain Ginger.

We talk to them about their series and this new publisher that’s showing that comics can be so much more than 22 pages.

Review: High Heaven #1

Chronic malcontent David Weathers dies and goes to Heaven—where everything is terrible, and everybody hates a complainer.

It’s hard to pull of entertainment where the main character is unlikeable. The consumer doesn’t want to cheer for the person. And at times it can drag storywise. Writer Tom Peyer has done an impressive thing with High Heaven #1 as the main character David Weathers is someone I myself want to beat up. Despite the fact I want to punch David myself, I still want to see where this miniseries goes. It’s satire and also over the top too.

No one likes David it seems and due to that, we the reader don’t feel too bad. We’re not supposed to cheer for him. We’re supposed to dislike him. But, through some subtle choices we feel sorry for him too. There’s moments we the reader can relate to.

By the time the story wraps up, I’ve forgotten about the dislike of David and bought into the direction the series takes us. It’s unexpected. It’s original. And, it should be an entertaining subject to drive the rest of the series.

Greg Scott provides the art with Andy Troy on colors and it’s a solid combination. The art is perfect in its focus and how much we’re shown. The comic could easily have gone over the top, for instance the death scene, but instead uses less is more. It allows our imagination to fill in some gaps making it that much more absurd and funny. Heaven too when we get there is rendered in such a way that the details is brings the humor of it all and begs the reader to pay attention.

But not only do we get the main story we get so much more for the price of an average comic. Peyer also delivers a second story with art by Chris Giarrusso called Hastag: Danger. The topic of the comic feels like it’s all over the place and it continues my only negative about AHOY Comics in that not all of the “more” matches the main story in tone or focus. That includes a cartoon by Shannon Wheeler and a prose story by Grant Morrison with art by Rick Geary. All are very good but they seem to be a bit scattershot in their tone and focus. Wheeler’s humorous comic is the exception as it too has a religious focus like the main story.

AHOY Comics continues to deliver with their second release in High Heaven. This is a comic company that burst on the scene with pretty big promises and has delivered with two issues. You feel like you’re getting a lot for your money and all of it is quality. Not only do I look forward to this series’ next issue but I’m also front and center to see what else AHOY has up their sleeve.

Doomsday Clock #7 (DC Comics) – After a bit of a break, the DC event is back and we’re still intrigued as to where it’s all going as it moves into the latter half of its run.

Edge of Spider-Geddon #4 (Marvel) – Each issue so far in this lead up to the main event has been fantastic. All its done is made us wish that each of these characters had their own series! We expect no less from this one.

Extermination #3 (Marvel) – When it comes to the Mutants, Marvel and them seem to be their best when it involves crazy time travel stories. This one has been lots of action and shockers and this is another we have no idea where it’s all going.

Faith: Dreamside #1 (Valiant) – Faith is always a fun time and mixing her with the Dreamside? Yeah, we’re in for that.

Fantasmagoria #1 (Starburns Industries Press) – A horror comic that explors mythology specific to Mexico. That alone has us intrigued to check it all out.

Fearscape #1 (Vault Comics) – This one sounds a bit like a new take on the Sandman and that sort of storytelling. Vault has some fantastic releases so we’re excited to check this out and see what it’s all about.

Fence #10 (BOOM! Studios) – This series has been fantastic bringing the sports manga concept to the twist. BOOM! has been killing it when it comes to that and this one has been amazing with every issue.

Friendo #1 (Vault Comics) – A personal marketing VR has gone haywire. Again, Vault has been top notch when it comes to releases so we’re excited to check this one out.

Gamma #1 (Dark Horse Comics) – Pokémon meets Power Rangers… um ok. Sounds awesome to us!

Heroes in Crisis #1 (DC Comics) – There’s been a hell of a build up to this new event series that explores the trauma that superheroes experience.

High Heaven #1 (AHOY Comics) – AHOY’s first release was amazing and we’re expecting more of the same from this upstart publisher that wants to deliver more when it comes to comics.

Illegal (Sourcebooks) – A powerful graphic novel exploring immigration and undocumented immigrants.

Infinity Wars: Iron Hammer #1 (Marvel) – The first issue that mashed together Captain America and Thor was fun and this one with that’s Iron Man and Thor? We’re expecting lots of drinking… and more fun.

Justice League Odyssey #1 (DC Comics) – The space/tech Justice League… you have out attention.

Man-Eaters #1 (Image Comics) – Chelsea Cain… nuff said.

Scarlet #2 (Jinxworld/DC Comics) – The first issue was a great return for the character and series and we want to see if the second issue can continue to deliver.

Spider-Geddon #0 (Marvel) – The newest Spider-Man event is kicking off and Marvel has been rocking it with the Multiverse Spider-Man stuff. Plus, this issue marks the debut of the recent video game version of the character.

Star Trek vs. Transformers #1 (IDW Publishing) – The title really says it all.

Stranger Things #1 (Dark Horse Comics) – The popular television show comes to comics.

Transformers: Lost Light #24 (IDW Publishing) – IDW is wrapping up their current run on Transformers and we have no idea what’s coming next. We just know this series is wrapping up and bringing all the pieces of the puzzle together.
