The Death of Superman Clip – Wonder Woman vs. Doomsday

Wonder Woman goes head-to-head with Doomsday in the streets of Metropolis in this new clip from The Death of Superman.

The Death of Superman ultimately finds Superman in a fight to the finish when the Man of Steel becomes the only hero who can stand in the way of the monstrous creature Doomsday and his unstoppable rampage of destruction.

As the inaugural film in the DC Universe Movies series, Superman Doomsday told an abridged version of The Death of Superman, DC Comics’ landmark 1992-93 comic phenomenon. But with a runtime of 75 minutes, the film focused on a core, singular storyline. The new, animated The Death of Superman, the first of a two-part film experience that will conclude with Reign of the Supermen in early 2019, restores many of the moments and characters that fans hold dear to their hearts.

The all-star cast is led by Jerry O’Connell (Crossing Jordan, Stand By Me), Rebecca Romijn (X-Men, The Librarians) and Rainn Wilson (The Office) as the voices of Superman, Lois Lane and Lex Luthor, respectively. The potent trio is joined by the DC Universe Movies’ returning voices of the Justice League: Jason O’Mara (The Man in High Castle, Terra Nova) as Batman, Rosario Dawson (Sin City, Rent, Daredevil) as Wonder Woman, Shemar Moore (S.W.A.T., Criminal Minds) as Cyborg, Nathan Fillion (Castle, ABC’s upcoming The Rookie) as Green Lantern/Hal Jordan, Matt Lanter (Timeless) as Aquaman, and Christopher Gorham (Covert Affairs, Ugly Betty) as The Flash.

The film is out on digital now and Ultra Blu-ray Combo Pack, Blu-ray Combo Pack, and DVD on August 7th.

Is this Doomsday in Batman v Superman?

actioncomics_901The second trailer for Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice dropped a little bit ago giving us a better idea of what we can expect in the film as well as a first look at what looks like Doomsday.

The character as been rumored to appear in the film, and it looks like some version of him will. Whether or not he will be called Doomsday is unknown, but judging from the trailer he’s created by Lex Luthor from Zod’s remains to stop Superman.

The character debuted in his first full appearance in Superman: Man of Steel #18 back in 1992 and would go on to later kill Superman in a fist fight that made worldwide news. In one version of his origin the character was a scientific experiment by a Kryptonian scientist to create a perfect being. The character has also appeared in the New 52 DC Comics as a villain who attacked Krypton and then was imprisoned in the Phantom Zone.

In the film it looks like he’ll be more than just physically strong and have some of Superman’s powers such as his projecting lasers from his eyes.

Check out the screenshots and sound off as to what you think.

Review: Doomed #1

doomed001The Truth story line from the Superman comics is one that is meant to make the character more approachable to the average fan, while also giving long term fans something more to read as the character’s fundamental meanings are laid out to be more apparent.  While it has only been partially effective in doing so, the intention is evidently there, to make Superman more of a likable hero than superpowered alien god.  That being the case, it makes one wonder why a different approach was not taken for this examination of the archetypal superhero, and Doomed serves as an example of a different route which could be equally effective.  This series is also interesting as DC has played at the idea of a Hulk rip-off before, notably with the new 52 version of O.M.A.C. but it has never really worked.  The dynamics of the Marvel characters are such that they are hard to replicate, but perhaps DC has found its green goliath after all, except in this case as one that can kind of turn into Doomsday.

The story here follows Reiser, a bit of a scientific prodigy who has gotten himself a job at S.T.A.R. Labs.  Although he is first introduced in his Doomsday persona, it is is not Doomsday which really defines this first issue.  The character is shown as a fish out of water, as the Metropolis, the City of Tomorrow, is seemingly replaced with New York City.  The character has to fight transit to make it to work, is hired basically as an intern, and has to squeeze an extra roommate into an already cramped apartment.  As these sequence of events take place he is accidentally exposed to something which causes that he has some kind of powers, although they are not powers that he seems to be interested in.

If there was meant to be a shake-up in Metropolis, then this is evidently a better route than the story arc that is dominating the other Superman titles.  This is s fresh take on the city and its superheroes, and the first real bit of something different for the city in a long time.  The character feel real and they are approachable, and his supporting characters even beg for more panel time as they themselves seem to have interesting stories.    Although this might be a little low on some people’s reading list, it probably shouldn’t be.  It was a fun read and it leaves the reader waiting impatiently for the next issue.

This is not a statue or small scale figure, this beast is nearly 21″ tall and articulated. The 6″ scale pilot will also be on display, but in a unpainted form. No word yet on a price point, but I’m thinking EXPENSIVE.

Mattel Toy Collector also dropped the word on some of their SDCC exclusives. First up is a Masters of the Universe Filmation coloured Hordak from She-Ra, a figure long requested by fans. The figure includes interchangeable arms, snap-on claw, staff and Imp sidekick. Pre-order or buy at the show and you’ll also get a bagged bonus item, the “Imp as a Treasure Chest” figure.

SDCC will also be the place to finally pick up a Doomsday in containment suit from the now dead DCU Classics series. Coming in at over 9″ tall, this figure is scaled far better than the “Unleased Doomsday” from earlier in DCU Classics series. Doomsday comes packed in a special window box that will pay homage to Superman: The Man of Steel #18.
