Apes Still Rule as Cowboys Retreat and Cap Holds Strong

Rise of the Planet of the Apes remained at the top of the box office with some strong competition from the debut of The Help.  The apes brought in $27.5 million, just a drop of 49.8% in it’s second week.  The movie has brought in $104.9 million through ten days.  The movie cost $93 million to make, so it’s good to go at this point.

Cowboys & Aliens dropped 51.6% in it’s third week earning $7.6 million.  That put it just ahead of Captain America: The First Avenger which earned an estimated $7.1 million.  Cowboys & Aliens has now earned $81.5 million and the likelihood of it reaching $100 million domestically is slim.  Cap on the other hand is above $150 million and will likely end up around $160 million domestically.

Update: Cowboys & Aliens Just Smurfs By The Smurfs

Bookmark and Share

Yesterday we reported that it looked like The Smurfs had beaten Cowboys & Aliens to win the weekend box office.  Well, it looks like we called that one a bit too soon.  The sci-fi/western mashup actually won the weekend bringing in $36.4 million for the weekend compared to $35.6 million for the little blue irritants.

Oops, reported that one a bit too early and to that I can only say, “smurf me.”

Movie Goers Say “Smurf You” to Cowboys & Aliens

Bookmark and Share

It looks like The Smurfs has just beat out Cowboys & Aliens when it comes to the weekend box office take.  Both movies have taken in an estimated $32.6 million in North America and the little blue beings just edged out the Cowboys and their alien foes.  The Smurfs has cost a reported $110 million to make while the highly pedigreed Cowboys & Aliens cost an estimated $163 million.

The Smurfs which was panned by movie reviewers was given a score of an A in exit polls but Cowboys & Aliens received a B.

Captain America: The First Avenger came in third, bringing in $25 million in it’s second week.  That’s brought it’s total in North America to $116.8 million.

Cowboys & Aliens was the final “comic book” movie of the summer, so we’ll see how it and Cap pans out over the next few weeks before we declare winners and losers.
