Weekly Reviews

Bookmark and Share

We’re a bit late this week and reviews will be updated throughout the day (and probably tomorrow) due to Gen Con. We’ll have lots of coverage of the convention starting tomorrow.

But for the time being, here’s the reviews!

Monthly Comics

Avengers: Prime #2 – The three core members of the Avengers are still lost and separated and doing their best to get through this new world.  Each one’s journey is fun to watch and follow.  Overall the comic has a nice retro/throwback feel to it.

Story: 7.75 Art: 7.75 Overall: 7.75

Brightest Day #7 – The reason for each person’s return is revealed as Boston Brand finally goes to the White Lantern.  There were definite moments I got chills and the series after seven issues is just as solid as when it began.

Story: 8.5 Art: 8.5 Overall: 8.5

Captain America #608 – Bucky’s identity and history have been leaked to the public as he and the Black Widow must take on a new Beetle.  The story line kicks it up a notch as we finally learn how the public will react when it’s revealed that their standard bearer was in fact an enemy of the state not long ago.

Story: 8.5 Art: 8.25 Overall: 8.5

Casanova #2 – The madness of the series continues as Casanova must decide what missions and objectives he’ll follow and which one’s he’ll ignore.  The series is just pure adrenaline, chaos and fun.

Story: 8.5 Art: 8.25 Overall: 8.5

Deadpool #1000 – As can be expected the issue is hit and miss but many of the stories are entertaining and funny and the art is hit and miss.  There’s a lot for $4.99 and I’d say the issue is worth it if you’re a Deadpool fan.  The issue is the fact this even exists as the character is beyond over exposed.  The ratings below are for the overall feel of the book.

Story: 8 Art: 8 Overall: 8

Doomwar #6 – We were promised a shocking ending and it was pretty damn close.  I really liked the wrap up and how everything ended and the possible new direction we’ll see Black Panther go in.  Maberry definitely came up to the plate and drive it home.

Story: 8.5 Art: 8.25 Overall: 8.5

Hawkeye & Mockingbird #3 – The dysfunction between Hawkeye and Mockingbird continues as Bobbi blames Clint for almost killing her mother.  There’s also a quick follow up as they go after the two individuals behind the assassination.  This is a really fun series and the dynamic between all of the characters is fantastic.

Story: 8.5 Art: 8 Overall: 8.25

Hit-Monkey #2 – It’s a monkey assassin versus Bullseye, how can it be bad?  Hit-Monkey goes after his target at a wedding and Bullseye is hired to protect him.  It’s really entertaining and the take on Bullseye is great.

Story: 8.5 Art: 8 Overall: 8.25

Iron Man: Legacy #5 – We learn what Doom’s plan is and why he’s behind the invasion.  Also, we get a better glimpse as to what exactly Tony’s legacy is to the world.

Story: 8Art: 8 Overall: 8

Marvel Universe vs. The Punisher #1 – A disease has ravaged the human race and turned them into zombie cannibals.  The comic is a fun and entertaining read.  There was definitely some humorous moments and unique takes.  This should be a really solid mini-series.

Story: 8 Art: 8 Overall: 8

Marvelman: Family’s Finest #2 – The series shows it’s age but it’s a nice piece of history to check out.  I think everyone is just waiting to see how the character fits into the bigger Marvel universe, if there even is a plan to introduce the characters.

Story: 7 Art: 7.5 Overall: 7.25

Secret Six #24 – I guess this is a “What if?” sort of story with the team transported into a wild west town where they must protect it from an army bent on killing everyone.  Overall, a good issue and solid self-contained story.

Story: 7.75 Art: 8 Overall: 7.75

Secret Warriors #18 – There’s something really right about the last few issues as the Howling Commandos must answer to the United Nations for their activities.  The way the story is told and the story itself is solid and entertaining, making me want to read the next issue to find out more.

Story: 8.75 Art: 8.5 Overall: 8.75

Shadowland #2 – Daredevil’s decent into crazy town continues as his friends and allies go in to talk to him.  Also the Kingpin makes his move to stop Daredevil by having a new player enter the field.

Story: 8.25 Art: 8 Overall: 8.25

Shadowland: Bullseye – The one shot following Bullseye’s funeral isn’t really needed and doesn’t add much to the overall story.  I may be proven wrong in the long term with that one, but from what I can tell, you can skip this issue.

Story: 6.75 Art: 7.5 Overall: 7

S.H.I.E.L.D. #3 – The series is a bit thick and you definitely need to pay attention as to what’s going on.  We learn a bit more about the secret society that’s been protecting humanity.  I have a feeling this will be a series that reads better as a trade than individual issues.

Story: 7.75 Art: 8 Overall: 7.75

Supergod # 4 – The series continues to explore what happens when man plays god by creating super heroes.  Another brilliant series by Warren Ellis.

Story: 8.75 Art: 7.75 Overall: 8.5

The Rage of Thor – Thor leaves Asgard and attempts a normal life after being accused of a crime.  A really good one shot that I’d definitely recommend for fans of Thor.

Story: 8 Art: 8 Overall: 8

Young Allies #3 – The team finally gets their act together and decide they need each other.  This is a really solid, consistent and good series, but I can see it not getting traction and getting canceled before it’s time.

Story: 7.75 Art: 7.75 Overall: 7.75

Troublemaker Tops Bestseller List For Two Consecutive Weeks!

Official Press Release

ALEX AND JANET EVANOVICH’S TROUBLEMAKER TOPS THE NEW YORK TIMES GRAPHIC-BOOKS BESTSELLER LIST

FOR TWO CONSECUTIVE WEEKS!

AUGUST 6, MILWAUKIE, OR—Best-selling author Janet Evanovich is no stranger to the New York Times bestseller list. In fact, her books have dominated this list for years now. It should come as no surprise, then, that Troublemaker, her first graphic novel, has topped the graphic-books bestseller list for two weeks in a row.

Cowritten with Evanovich’s daughter, Alex Evanovich, Troublemaker is the continuation of the popular Barnaby series, which features the high-stakes misadventures of Alex Barnaby, the main character; NASCAR driver Sam Hooker; and, of course, Beans, the Saint Bernard. The third book in the series, this exciting new volume delivers more fast cars, fast-paced action, and steamy romance.

“We are absolutely floored by the amazing job the people at Dark Horse and artist Joëlle Jones did with Troublemaker,” said Janet and Alex Evanovich. “It’s been an honor to be part of such a talented and dedicated team.”

“Topping the New York Times graphic-books bestseller list is extremely gratifying to all who worked so hard on Troublemaker as well as the booksellers who supported it,” said Dark Horse’s vice president of business development, Michael Martens.

Troublemaker Volume 1 is on sale now in your local comic shop, bookstore, or department store. The highly anticipated second volume will arrive this November.

Gen Con Review

Bookmark and Share

The first two days of Gen Con are done and we’ve got lots of photos and video (as well as quite a few purchased items), but with a crap internet connection we’re not even going to try to upload anything.  But here’s our general thoughts of the show.

  1. It’s been about 11 years since I’ve been to a Gen Con and the professionalism has improved as well as the size of the show.  The card and miniature gaming area alone is the size of most show floors.
  2. Vampires are out and Zombies are in.
  3. Cthulhu is getting popular again based off of the games based on H.P. Lovecraft’s famous creation.
  4. I still don’t get LARPing.
  5. Card games look like they’ve settled into pretty set markets.
  6. There’s tons of great board and non-collectible card games that no one knows about.
  7. Kilts are in.  Cross dressing might be too, based on a large volume of gender bending folks walking around.
  8. Booth babes are present but not needed.
  9. The women have taken their foothold in the game industry based off of action we saw at various booths.
  10. Gen Con is still the best 4 days of gaming anywhere.

Expect a lot of coverage starting Monday, and maybe some from the floor updates from our iPad, as well as a pretty big announcement.

If you’re at the show, feel free to attempt to track us down and say hi!
