Atari Launches the Centipede Blast Card Game Kickstarter

Centipede Blast

Atari is inviting its most engaged fans to get in early on the release of Centipede Blast, a new party card game that will ship in December. Centipede Blast was developed in collaboration with members of the Atari Club as part of the company’s Club Made initiative. Fans can order the new game through a Kickstarter campaign

Centipede Blast is a fast-paced snap card game that captures the essence of arcade excitement, blending familiar mechanics with fun twists. Adrenaline-inducing elements include the dynamic ‘blast card’ which ramps up the action with an unexpected blast, and the ‘mushroom’ card which strategically shifts the flow of play, mimicking the role of mushrooms in the arcade game. Perfect for quick, engaging rounds, players will delight in outmaneuvering opponents through quick thinking and strategic card play, ensuring a fresh and exciting experience every time.

The Club Made initiative is a vehicle for community engagement, gathering valuable insights, and fostering a sense of ownership and pride among Club members. Since the launch of the Atari Club, Atari has held a series of progressively more ambitious community-driven projects, including the design of patches, apparel, high-score competitions, and most recently an eight-week long virtual Summer Camp.

PAX West 2024: Atari’s Yars Rising gets a prequel comic

Yars Rising

The Yars universe is preparing to expand even further, as Atari and developer WayForward have announced an official single-issue companion comic book titled Yars Rising. The comic is a prequel to the upcoming sci-fi metroidvania video game Yars Rising coming to PC and consoles on September 10, 2024. The 32-page comic will be available online and in traditional comic book retail stores in November.

Yars Rising is the latest offering in a 40-year-old video game franchise that began in 1982 with the release of Yars’ Revenge for the Atari 2600 home console. In an industry first, Atari paired the game cartridge at retail with a comic book. The comic gave players a view into the expansive backstory behind the 8-bit game and set the stage for their on-screen campaign.

Written by Wayforward Game Director Adam TierneyYars Rising acts as a prequel to an entirely new Yars story that unfolds within the video game. The comic follows the lead character, professional hacker Emi Kimura, as she and her friends try to navigate the ramifications of a job gone horribly wrong. As the story progresses, readers are given a taste and perhaps some subtle hints about what awaits them in the game.

Yars Rising features the creative talents of artists Ele Bruni, Ashleigh Hetrick, and Aurora Maeno

Atari Introduces the Atari VCS

Atari — One of the world’s most iconic consumer brands and interactive entertainment producers, today announced that “Atari VCS” is the official name of its new retro-inspired gaming and entertainment platform, previously known by its working title “Ataribox.” The company also marks this important milestone by sharing the Atari VCS, Classic Joystick and Modern Controller prototypes with press at this week’s Game Developers Conference in San Francisco, with the objective to reveal the exclusive pre-order date for the Atari VCS during the month of April 2018.

Inspired by the iconic silhouette of the original Atari 2600 Video Computer System, the new Atari VCS has already generated considerable excitement within the gaming community. Its skillful blend of modern lines and reverential details, combined with contemporary content technology and new innovation, has evoked positive reactions from Atari fans both new and old. The Atari VCS will of course serve up lots of classic content, but it is so much more than a “retro-box.” It is a completely new Atari connected device designed for today’s living room.

The new Atari VCS logo, like the new hardware itself, combines past and present, and is inspired by Atari’s rich history of progressive graphic design. Countless highly-memorable game logos, illustrations, ads and packages were generated by Atari’s legendary in-house Industrial Design and Graphics department during the 1970’s and 80’s.

Industrial design and graphics are essential parts of the brand’s DNA and part of what makes every Atari game an adventure for the player. Today’s Atari design, engineering, software and marketing teams all endeavor to bring similar levels of care and attention to the new VCS. Atari intends its new video computer system to change the way you interact with your TV, just as the original Atari 2600 Video Computer System first did more than 40 years ago.

Review: Centipede #1

“I’m no action hero. Mostly I just like pasta.” -Dale Trell

Well, if those aren’t words to live by, I don’t know what are. In Centipede #1, our protagonist, Dale Trell, has been in hiding for roughly three weeks after an unidentified monster has come to his home planet and jump started an apocalypse that has killed everyone else on STY-REK. He’s finally mustered up the courage to leave his shelter and take revenge on the unidentified monster.

Dynamite Entertainment takes on the challenge of bringing former Atari game to life in a new venture featuring the legendary console game—Centipede. Writer Max Bemis and artist Eoin Marron have teamed up to bring the classic to fruition. If the name Max Bemis looks familiar to you, it’s because he is the frontman for band, Say Anything.

Bemis relies on humor and backstory for this first issue. The most imaginative and fun aspect of this story is how Trell grew up with an obsession about earth life, mirroring humans obsession with aliens, and I’m looking forward to learning more about how this helps him navigate conquering the centipede. I’m also looking forward to seeing him come into contact with other survivors. I don’t see the story remaining very interesting if that doesn’t happen.

If you’re like me and love a good post-apocalypse story, then you should definitely check out this new series, and join me in the journey to see where it goes!

Centipede is the Latest Atari Comic Book

Dynamite Entertainment continues its partnership with Atari to create a new comics line based on beloved Atari video game titles. The two entertainment juggernauts are pleased to announce that Centipede will join the recently released Swordquest as the latest title in the retrogaming series. Launching in July, Centipede #1 will bring a tale of survival and vengeance to comic book and gaming fans everywhere, courtesy of writer Max Bemis and artist Eoin Marron.

Sci-Fi, horror, and action collide in a comic for fans of Aliens, The Thing, and Predator. When a terrifying creature from beyond the stars attacks his planet, protagonist Dale’s journey begins, but he is not out to save his world; its already much too late for that. As the lone survivor, the only thing Dale wants is revenge.

The debut issue of Centipede features a wide selection of cover variants, providing fans and retailers with the freedom of choice! The cover artwork features the talents of Francesco Francavilla, interior artist Eoin Marron, and Dan Schkade. A special classic game art cover will also be available. Limited variant editions in “Black & White,” “Homage,” and “Virgin Art” formats are also available as retailer incentives for comic shops that support the launch issue by achieving stocking thresholds. Fans will also be excited by the Classic Atari mini-comic incentive, a remastered reissue of the whimsical 32-page mini-comic (measuring 5″ x 7.75″) which was originally packaged with the Atari cartridge of its namesake.

Centipede #1 is slated for release in July.

IDW Games Teams Up with Atari for New Tabletop Games

Atari, one of the world’s most recognized publishers and producers of interactive entertainment, and IDW Games, announced today that they have entered into a partnership to produce a line of tabletop games based on several classic Atari videogame titles. Centipede, Asteroids, and Missile Command are all headed to the tabletop by way of Jon Gilmour, co-designer of Dead of Winter, and his hand-picked crew of up-and-coming co-developers.

Set to capture the feel of these classic titles, the Atari line of board games are fun, intense and fast-paced. While each game in the series will play differently from the others, they will all have you nostalgic for the days of being hunched over a CRT in a dark arcade with your eyes on the prize: top of the high-score chart.

The Atari series of games will launch with Centipede in the Fall of 2017 with future titles releasing intermittently shortly after.
