Super-Articulate: Marvel Legends Catch-Up – Emma Frost, Agent Anti-Venom, Korg, and More!

How do you do, fellow kids? It’s been pretty busy on the action figure front lately, and there’s a lot of tracking down to do. As of this writing, I haven’t been fortunate enough to happen across one Walgreens Dani Moonstar (let alone three), but I did get ahold of the previously MIA Walgreens Emma Frost. Additionally, my Agent Anti-Venom arrived from Hasbro Pulse, and I got around to picking up two of the two-packs in the wild as they got their deep discount at Walmart. Let’s take a look at all of that.

Emma Frost: No question; this is a top-notch figure. Great design, great sculpt. I know some fans want a classic Hellfire Emma (and I’m one of them), but THIS one is terrific. The figure comes with two heads (one with a more modern cut while the other sports a look more akin to her Hellfire/GenX days) and two sets of hands (gesturing, fists). I vastly prefer the gesturing hands; not only are they nice work in a tiny space, but they’re character appropriate, approximating the way that artists pose Emma in the comics when she uses her powers. The swoop of the cape is well done, and all of the small details in the costume are well-realized. My sole complaint is that she can be a bit difficult to stand with the nature of her heeled boots. Overall, though, this is good work and a continued indication that Hasbro is committed to quality in their exclusives, just like they are in the regular lines.

Agent Anti-Venom: Yes, this is basically Agent Venom with a flipped paint job. But here’s the thing. It looks cool. IT. JUST. LOOKS. COOL. And if we can’t occasionally pick something up just because it looks cool, then why are we toy collectors? I happen to think that the black-on-white layout looks awesome, and it actually makes details pop that were hard to see in the original, darker versions. The accessories are basically the same, with the two pairs of guns and the pseudopod attachment. I really like it, and I’m sticking to that.

Luis/Ghost two-pack: I was frankly delighted when they announced Luis. Michael Peña has been a great value-add to the MCU, and it’s great to see supporting characters get some love. Ghost was also a great choice. The accessories here run from interesting to fun. The extra unmasked head and attachable hood make perfect sense for Ghost. The larger ant (presumably from an Altoids tin) and the shrunken Pym lab are the perfect kind of whimsical touches you’d associate with these sub-franchise. As for the sculpting, the facial likenesses are solid on both; Luis has the grin you’d expect, and the unmasked Ghost head captures some of the exhaustion that Hannah John-Kamen got across in her performance. This is a really nice two-pack. I just had to take a “No te gusta Moz?!?” picture with Luis, as well.

The Grandmaster/Korg two-pack: I’m not quite sure why Hasbro went with two Thor: Ragnarok two-packs instead of just going with another assortment with something like a Surtur BAF, but that was their decision. The other two-pack (Hela/Skurge) is still out there, but I’ve only picked up this one so far due to my long-standing (back to Planet Hulk) love of Korg. The Korg figure here is terrific from top to bottom; it has a great facial expression and loads of texture. His blaster-club is really accurate. It’s just a (wait, don’t say it) rock-solid design. As for the Grandmaster, he is appropriately Goldblum. I’m consistently impressed that Hasbro has gotten better and better with likenesses over time in their cinematic lines. The color palette of the figure is well-considered, and the melter-stick is another fine accessory. It’s another good set. Also, buying the two 2-packs at the same time gave me an opportunity for a “Piss off, Ghost!” photo.

Far From Home Closes in on Captain Marvel

Comic film adaptations are big dollars and we track how they do each week to see trends and what’s working and what’s not. With 2018’s films wrapped up, we’ve turned our focus squarely on 2019.

This past weekend, Spider-Man: Far From Home earned an estimated $665,000. The movie’s domestic total now stands at $389.2 million. Over the week, the film added about $750,000 internationally to bring that total to $739.1 million. Worldwide, the film has earned $1.127 billion. It’s now less than $1 million away from Captain Marvel‘s total of $1.128 billion. It’ll be a week or two but the film will likely pass it and become the ninth highest-grossing comic adaptation worldwide.

The Kitchen, based on the Vertigo comic miniseries, continues to struggle at the box office but it’s earning dollars. Over the week, the film earned about $85,000 domestically for the week and $300,000 internationally. The movie has brought in just over $12 million domestically, $3 million internationally, and over $15 million worldwide. That’s far short of the $37 million reported budget. It’s also the worst-performing comic adaptation of the year.

Avengers: Endgame is still bringing in money after 21 weeks. The movie earned about $8,000 domestically over the week to bring that total to $858.4 million. Along with its $1.938 billion internationally, the film has grossed $2.796 billion worldwide.

Far From Home Challenges Captain Marvel

This past weekend, Spider-Man: Far From Home saw a dip after last weekend’s boost at the box office. The film came in at #13 at the domestic weekend box office. The film added $1.2 million over the weekend to its total to bring that to $388.1 million. It also added $2 million to its international total over the week. That total now stands at $738.2 million. Worldwide, the film has earned $1.126 billion. It’s now just $2 million behind Captain Marvel‘s worldwide total of $1.128 billion. There’s a chance it’ll pass that film’s total before the week is up.

The Kitchen, based on the Vertigo comic miniseries, continues to struggle at the box office but it’s earning dollars. The film earned $180,000 domestically for the week and nothing internationally. The movie has brought in just shy of $12 million domestically, $2.7 million internationally, and $14.7 million worldwide. That’s far short of the $37 million reported budget. It’s also the worst-performing comic adaptation of the year.

Avengers: Endgame is still bringing in money after 20 weeks. The movie came in at #42 with an estimated $12,000 to bring its domestic total to $858.4 million. Along with its $1.938 billion internationally, the film has grossed $2.796 billion worldwide.

Far From Home Gets a Boost From Its Extended Cut

Comic film adaptations are big dollars and we track how they do each week to see trends and what’s working and what’s not. With 2018’s films wrapped up, we turn our focus squarely on 2019.

This past weekend, Spider-Man: Far From Home saw a big boost at the box office. The film improved up to eighth from last weekend’s 15th by earning $4.3 million. That’s a 153.2% increase over the previous weekend. The film was re-released with extra footage. The film has now earned $385.9 million domestically. Over the week, the film also earned $225,000 at the foreign box office. There it has earned $736.2 million for a worldwide total of $1.122 billion. It’s now just $6 million away from passing Captain Marvel and becoming the ninth highest-grossing comic adaptation worldwide.

The Kitchen, based on the Vertigo comic miniseries, continues to struggle at the box office but it’s earning dollars. The film earned $377,000 domestically for the week and $700,000 million internationally. The movie has brought in $11.8 million domestically, $2.7 million internationally, and $14.5 million worldwide. That’s far short of the $37 million reported budget. It’s also the worst-performing comic adaptation of the year.

Avengers: Endgame is still bringing in money after 19 weeks. The movie came in at #35 for the weekend and added an estimated $80,000 to its domestic total. It has now earned $858.3 million domestically. It also earned about $123,000 internationally over the week. In total the film has earned $2.796 billion.

The Kitchen is Toast While Far From Home Keeps Swinging

Comic film adaptations are big dollars and we track how they do each week to see trends and what’s working and what’s not. With 2018’s films wrapped up, we turn our focus squarely on 2019.

The Kitchen, based on the Vertigo comic miniseries, continues to struggle at the box office. The film fell off the weekend box office chart in its third week. That’s not a good sign and indicates the film only has a few more weeks at the box office before being pulled completely. Still, the film earned $1.1 million domestically for the week and $1.8 million internationally. The movie has brought in $11.4 million domestically, $2.1 million internationally, and $13.5 million worldwide. That’s far short of the $37 million reported budget. It’s also the worst-performing comic adaptation of the year.

This past weekend, Spider-Man: Far From Home #15 for the weekend earning an estimated $1.7 million domestically to bring its total to $379.7 million. The movie also earned $10 million internationally over the week to raise that total to $736 million. Worldwide the film stands at $1.116 billion. It’s $13 million behind Captain Marvel and there’s a chance it’ll pass that film’s worldwide gross before its theatrical run is over.

Avengers: Endgame is still bringing in money after 18 weeks. The movie came in at #33 and adding $50,000 to its domestic total to bring that to $858.2 million. Over the week, the film added $220,000 to its international total. Domestically it has earned $858.2 million, internationally it has earned $1.938 billion, and a worldwide total of $2.796 billion.

2018 Sets a Record Year for Comic Film Adaptations

2018’s comic film adaptations have finally settled at the box office and as the dust has settled, it’s clear it was a record year.

While Avengers: Infinity War dominated the box office, Black Panther stood out becoming one of the few blockbuster modern films to earn more domestically than at the international box office. I Kill Giants saw a small theatrical run while being released at the same time digitally. Venom and Aquaman both were surprise hits and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse dominated when it came to awards.

2018 topped 2017’s then record year and then some. Comic adaptations earned $2.697 billion domestically, $4.563 billion internationally, $7.260 billion worldwide, with a “profit” of $6.048 billion. That’s off of 10 films. 2017, with 16 films, saw domestic earnings of $2.365 billion, international earnings of $3.755 billion, worldwide earnings of $6.120 billion, and “profits” of $4.442 billion.

Budget

2018’s films saw a budget averaging $131.9 million. While that was a bit higher than 2017, it was nowhere near the highest ever. 2006 saw an average budget of $178 million. 2018 saw the fifth-highest average budget.

Domestic Box Office

2018 saw $2.670 billion at the domestic box office besting 2017’s $2.365 billion. The films on average returned more earning $270 million domestically which beat 2012’s $263 million.

International Box Office

Internationally, comic adaptations earned $4.563 billion. That bests 2017’s $3.755 billion. On average, films earned $456.3 million at the foreign box office where the previous record was $429.5 million set in 2012. 2018 nearly doubled 2017’s $250.3 million.

Worldwide Totals

Worldwide, 2018 saw $7.260 billion in revenue besting 2017’s previous best of $6.120 billion. On average, films brought in $726 million beating the previous best of $692.4 million set in 2012.

“Profits”

While we don’t know how much was spent on marketing, so these numbers are a bit sketchy, 2018 saw $6.048 billion in profits. That beats 2017’s previous record of $4.442 billion. On average, films in 2018 made $672 million besting the previous best of $520.4 million set in 2012.

The Kitchen Continues to Circle the Drain as 2018 Wraps Up

Comic film adaptations are big dollars and we track how they do each week to see trends and what’s working and what’s not. With 2018’s films wrapped up, we turn our focus squarely on 2019. We’ll have a deep dive into 2018 later today. But, on to 2019!

The Kitchen, based on the Vertigo comic miniseries, continues to struggle at the box office. Coming in at #13 this past weekend, the film dropped 60.1% in its second weekend earning an estimated $2.2 million to bring its domestic total to $10.4 million. It barely doubled its domestic total over the week. The movie has also earned around $252,000 at the international box office. With a $38 million budget, the movie will have to fight to earn its production value back. It’s currently the worst performing comic film of 2019 in all measurements.

This past weekend, Spider-Man: Far From Home came in at #12 earning an estimated $2.8 million to bring its domestic total to $376.6 million. The film also earned $203,000 internationally over the week where its total stands at $726.2 million. Worldwide it has earned $1.103 billion. While the film is the highest-grossing Spider-Man film worldwide, it’s still only second domestically. The original 2002 Spider-Man holds the top title with $403.7 million.

Avengers: Endgame is still bringing in money after 17 weeks. Coming in at #25 it added $98,000 to its domestic total. The film stands at $858.1 million domestically. Over the week, the film earned $480,000 internationally. It has earned $1.938 internationally for a worldwide total of $2.796 billion.

Dark Phoenix wasn’t on the weekend chart but brought in $19,000 over the week domestically. The film has earned $65.8 million domestically and $185.6 million internationally for a worldwide total of $252.4 million.

Comic film adaptations are big dollars and we track how they do each week to see trends and what’s working and what’s not.

2018 wraps up

This past week no film released in 2018 added to their total. That’s two weeks in a row so we’re counting 2018’s releases as done. We’ll have a dive into how 2018 compared to previous years and the general takeaway for comic films.

But, so far…

2018 is a record-setting year for comic film adaptations. It has topped 2017’s then record year and then some. Currently, comic adaptations have earned $2.697 billion domestically, $4.563 billion internationally, $7.260 billion worldwide, with a “profit” of $6.048 billion. That’s off of 10 films. 2017, with 16 films, saw domestic earnings of $2.365 billion, international earnings of $3.755 billion, worldwide earnings of $6.120 billion, and “profits” of $4.442 billion.

Here’s where 2018’s comic films stand as far as the actual numbers.

And on to 2019!

The Kitchen debuted at #7 with an estimated $5.5 million. That’s well below expectations which had it earning between $6 and $11 million. The film earned a “B-” CinemaScore from an audience that was 51% female and 89% were over the age of 25. The film is based on the Vertigo comic miniseries.

Reviews weren’t kind for the film which has just 21% approval from critics and 69% from the audience on RottenTomatoes.

This past weekend, Spider-Man: Far From Home was #8 for the weekend with an estimated $5.3 million to bring its domestic total to $371 million after 6 weeks. It also earned $11 million at the international box office to bring that total to $726 million. Worldwide, the film has earned $1.097 billion passing The Dark Knight Rises in all-time grosses for a film based on a comic.

Avengers: Endgame is still bringing in money after 16 weeks. It earned $197,000 over the weekend to increase its domestic total to $857.9 million. Over the week, the film earned about $75,000 internationally to bring that total to $1.937 billion and $2.795 billion worldwide.

Dark Phoenix brought in $31,000 over the weekend and about $60,000 over the week domestically. Internationally, the film added $20,000 to its total over the week. The film has earned $65.8 million domestically and $185.6 million internationally for a worldwide total of $252.4 million.

This past week no film released in 2018 added to their total. We’ll be doing a wrap up of 2018’s stats once no more money has come in for two weeks in a row. So, we’re waiting for another week.

But, so far…

Currently, comic adaptations have earned $2.697 billion domestically, $4.563 billion internationally, $7.260 billion worldwide, with a “profit” of $6.048 billion. This past weekend, Spider-Man: Far From Home added $7.8 million to its domestic total which now stands at $360.3 million. Internationally, the film added $9.5 million to that total to bring it to $715 million. Worldwide, the film has earned $1.075 billion.

Avengers: Endgame came in at #14 for the weekend and earned an estimated $313,000 to bring its domestic total to $857.4 million. Internationally, the film earned $500,000 over the past week to bring that total to $1.937 billion. Worldwide, the film has earned $2.795 billion.

Dark Phoenix improved to #19 from the previous week’s #26 and earned an estimated $109,000 to bring that total to $65.8 million. The weekend’s total is an improvement by $5,000 from the previous week. The film added about $200,000 over the week internationally. That total is now $186.6 million for a worldwide total of $252.3 million.
