Tongues Number Two art show & release party with Anders Nilsen on November 1

This November Floating World Comics will host an art exhibit and book signing with Anders Nilsen to celebrate the release of his new book, Tongues Number Two.

The second issue of Tongues draws readers deeper into the enigmatic, interconnected stories of a god imprisoned on a mountainside, an eagle – his apparent jailor, and a young American wandering into trouble in the wilderness with a teddy bear. We also move back in time to watch our young East African protagonist as she experiences violent and peculiar visions of her frightening near future, and meet a handsome, malevolent young swan with dark appetites. Tongues is part adventure and part meditation on humanity’s fraught present moment and its peculiar evolutionary heritage.

The book itself is as much an unfolding object as it is a story, featuring full color, a large format, and intricate design. The artist is serializing the book in conjunction with publisher No Miracles in 10 issues over the next few years.

SPX 2018 Announces New Special Guests

Small Press Expo has announced the first group of Special Guests for SPX 2018. The festival takes place on Saturday and Sunday, September 15-16, at the Bethesda North Marriott Hotel & Conference Center and will have over 650 creators, 280 exhibitor tables and 22 programming slots to introduce attendees to the amazing world of independent and small press comics. Additional Special Guests will be announced shortly.

Roz Chast

Roz Chast is a long time cartoonist for The New Yorker who wrote and illustrated the #1 New York Times bestselling graphic novel, Can’t We Talk About Something More Pleasant? from Bloomsbury. It won a National Book Critics Circle Award, a Kirkus Prize and was a finalist for the National Book Award. Her most recent book is GOING INTO TOWN: A Love Letter to New York. She has published eight collections of her cartoons, illustrated several children’s books and received honorary doctorates from the Pratt Institute and Dartmouth College. Derf

Derf is the author of My Friend Dahmer (Abrams Comicarts, 2012), the haunting account of his teenage friendship at Revere High School with the future serial killer. It has been hailed as one of the finest graphic novels in recent memory by Slate, The Plain Dealer, Publishers Weekly, USA Today, Kirkus Reviews, Le Monde, El Mundo, The Guardian and many more. The film adaptation of My Friend Dahmer premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival and played in cinemas in the US and abroad throughout 2017 and 2018.

SPX is honored to show a screening of My Friend Dahmer, after which Derf will talk about the book and movie.

Ellen Forney

Ellen Forney authored her 2012 graphic memoir, Marbles for which she was the 2012 recipient of The Stranger Genius Award for Literature as well as the winner of the National Association for the Advancement of Psychoanalysis 2013 Gradiva Award.

Rock Steady: Brilliant Advice from My Bipolar Life is the eagerly awaited companion book to Forney’s 2012 best-selling graphic memoir, Marbles: Mania, Depression, Michelangelo, and Me.

Ron Wimberly

Ronald Wimberly is a cartoonist/designer. He’s worked with The New Yorker, Dargaud, DC, Marvel, Image, Darkhorse and many others. He’s exhibited his comics in New York, Tokyo, and Paris. Ronald was the 2016 Columbus Comics resident and two time resident cartoonist at Angoulême Maison des Auteurs.

Anders Nilsen

Anders Nilsen is the author of nine books including Big Questions, Don’t Go Where I Can’t Follow, Poetry is Useless and the forthcoming Tongues. His work has appeared in Kramer’s Ergot, Mome, the New York Times and elsewhere and been translated widely overseas. Nilsen has garnered three Ignatz Awards and the Lynd Ward Graphic Novel Prize.

Anders will be debuting the latest volume of his acclaimed series Tongues at SPX 2018.

Rina Ayuyang (Saturday Only)

Rina Ayuyang has been nominated for the Ignatz and Eisner Awards, and she was honored with a MoCCA Arts Festival Awards of Excellencez Silver Medal. Her comics have appeared in Mutha Magazine and The Comics Journal. She is also the publisher of the micro-comics imprint Yam Books. Her first book was Whirlwind Wonderland.

Rina Ayuyang’s latest from Drawn & Quarterly, Blame This on the Boogie, is the true story of how Hollywood musicals got one person through school, depression, and the challenges of parenthood.

Joshua Cotter

Joshua W. Cotter is the author of Skyscrapers of the Midwest, Driven by Lemons and the Nod Away series. He lives in rural northwest Missouri with his wife, children, cats and an acute sense of impending mortality. They keep him making comics.

Joshua will be at SPX 2018 to celebrate the 10th Anniversary of the release of Skyscrapers of the Midwest from Adhouse Books.

Lawrence Lindell

Lawrence Lindell is a cartoonist, author and teacher from California. He created From Black Boy With Love, Hey, People of Color, Couldn’t Afford Therapy, So I Made This and the webcomic The Section. When he’s not drawing/writing comics, he is usually buying/reading them.

Small Press Expo (SPX) is the preeminent showcase for the exhibition of independent comics, graphic novels, and alternative political cartoons. SPX is a registered 501(c)3 nonprofit that brings together more than 650 artists and publishers to meet their readers, booksellers, and distributors each year. Graphic novels, mini comics, and alternative comics will all be on display and for sale by their authors and illustrators. The expo includes a series of panel discussions and interviews with this year’s guests.

The Ignatz Award is a festival prize held every year at SPX recognizing outstanding achievement in comics and cartooning, with the winners chosen by attendees at the show.

As in previous years, profits from the SPX will go to support the SPX Graphic Novel Gift Program, which funds graphic novel purchases for public and academic libraries, as well as the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund (CBLDF), which protects the First Amendment rights of comic book readers and professionals. Review: Unbeatable Squirrel Girl #26

SquirrelGirlCoverUnbeatable Squirrel Girl takes a little break in issue 26 for a special in-universe zine comic written and drawn by various heroes, villains, and denizens of the Marvel Universe. In real life, they are all written by Ryan North with Erica Henderson switching roles with her Jughead collaborator Chip Zdarsky to pen a surprisingly sultry Howard the Duck story. It’s a fun sampler that mostly hit and very little miss from the much vaunted series of three panel Galactus gag strips by Garfield‘s Jim Davis to Anders Nilsen and Soren Iverson’s poignant story of Wolverine befriending a Sentinel and shotgunning a beer with his adamantium claws. The series Unbeatable Squirrel Girl has a lot of fantastic action, jokes, and the occasional superhero parody, but it’s a book where Doreen listens to both her opponents and allies and tries to work things out with eating nuts and kicking butts. S

So, it’s fitting, we get this comic that is written by a wacky range of POVs beginning with Squirrel Girl herself who stutters through the intro about his being a fundraiser zine. We get to listen to Kraven, hear Spider-Man’s retort, and see the world through Tippytoe’s eyes, which is drawn and colored in an adorable manner  Madeline McGrane’s art and colors make this frame story definitely look like a zine you might pick up at the local coffee shop or one of those fancy schmancy zine stores in bigger stories. It’s followed up by Chip Zdarsky going the closest he’ll ever get to his work on Sex Criminals in a mainstream comic with Erica Henderson doubling as a film noir director, but more awkward. They use close-ups and small panels of Howard the Duck and his femme fatale/client like they’re egging Marvel editorial to linger on this scene more while adding a funny caption. Zdarsky doing Big Two interiors is a big treat, and he barely holds back.

Tom Fowler’s Brain Drain story is a nice showcase of the underrated Unbeatable Squirrel Girl supporting character and hews the closest to Henderson’s usual style on the book. His take on Brain Drain is philosophical, adorable, and structured like the computer science programs that the character loves. It’s oddly motivational too and worth a reread thanks to its erudite writing style. Speaking of rereads, Carla Speed McNeil draws a Loki comic that only makes sense forwards and backwards and is a great example of how the comics medium allows for flexibility of meaning using Loki as a litmus test. It’s a wonderful double page spread, and the best Loki story since Journey into Mystery.

After this, Michael Cho draws a Kraven the Hunter comic/Spider-Man diss story, which is a pretty fun riff off “Kraven’s Last Hunt” and features dead presidents. His art has a light hearted old school vibe while having a subversive take on superhero/supervillain relationships kind of like the main Unbeatable Squirrel Girl title, but from the bad guy’s perspective. It’s followed up by a one page retort from Spider-Man with some gorgeous, yet still funny digital painting work from Rahzzah, who teams up later in the book to do Nancy Whitehead’s photo collage comic with the help of North, who channels Dinosaur Comics in the strip. It’s a well-designed remix story that will make the non-artists reading this comic smile and the kind of mash-up that you would find in a real zine.

But the heavy hitter of the bunch is Anders Nilsen and Soren Iverson’s Wolverine story that is fitting for an artist who had done a comic called Poetry is Useless. Anders Nilsen has a minimalist Euro style perfect for a comic about Wolverine getting talked out of killing a Sentinel, who challenges him to look past his shiny mutant killing exterior and team up with him to beat up some kaiju. (Sadly, this part of the story is off panel.) Wolverine gets a big epiphany moment when he realizes that he’s “hating and fearing” the Sentinel just like the X-Men have been treated for most of their career. This story is proof that more Fantagraphics and Drawn and Quarterly guys should draw superhero comics.

Following this weighty, yet fun story is a couple of candy confections. Unbeatable Squirrel Girl colorist Rico Renzi draws an adorable and faux edgy Batman parody starring the one and only Tippytoe. It pokes fun at Batman’s angsty backstory as well as the fact that Tippytoe always plays second banana. Renzi’s art style is similar to the cartoon The Amazing World of Gumball with lush digital backgrounds and colors. Finally, Jim Davis, whose work I was familiar with eons before I ever opened a Marvel comic, transposes the classic Garfield and Jon relationship to Galactus and the Silver Surfer. It’s the same dad-ish, three panel punchline jokes, but told in a more cosmic key, and Davis has a lot of fun showing Galactus doing his planet devouring, face stuffing thing. His literal eye popping Silver Surfer has a similar manic energy to Robin Williams’ Genie in Disney’s Aladdin.

Unbeatable Squirrel Girl #26 is a real treat as independent cartoonists, the creator of Garfield, and even the book’s colorist get to take a stab at some of the more familiar faces in the Marvel Universe while also giving Squirrel Girl’s supporting cast a moment in the sun. It’s sometimes poignant and always funny.

Tongues Book Release and Art Show with Anders Nilsen September 7

Award-winning comics artist Anders Nilsen will officially unveil his new book Tongues at Floating World Comics in Portland on September 7th.

Original artwork from the book will be on display in conjuction with Portland’s First Thursdays Art Walk, and Nilsen will give a short talk about the book and the process of putting it together.

Set in Modern Central Asia Tongues follows the intertwined stories of an imprisoned god, an East African orphan on an errand of murder and a young American man with a teddy bear, lost on the tattered fringes of the human world. It is a story of adventure and revenge and a meditation on human nature in this fraught present moment.

The full-color, large-format Tongues is Nilsen’s most ambitious work to date and marks a return to something a bit closer to the more traditional comics form he last explored in his multiple award winning Big Questions (Drawn and Quarterly, 2011). The artist is serializing the book in large-format, full-color comics to be self-published and distributed in conjunction with No Miracles Press over the next few years until the story is complete.

Anders Nilsen’s New Graphic Novel “Tongues” Retells the Greek Myth of Prometheus

Set in a version of modern Central Asia, Anders Nilsen‘s Tongues is a retelling of the Greek myth of Prometheus. It follows the captive god’s friendship with the eagle who carries out his daily sentence of torture, and chronicles his pursuit of revenge on the god that has imprisoned him. Prometheus’ story is entwined with that of an East African orphan on an errand of murder, and a young man with a teddy bear strapped to his back, wandering aimlessly into catastrophe (readers may recognize this character from Nilsen’s Dogs and Water). The story is set against the backdrop of tensions between rival groups in an oil-rich wilderness.

Tongues is loosely based on a trilogy by the ancient Greek playwright Aeschylus, of which two plays are lost and only dimly reconstructed by historians. Key to the story of Tongues is Prometheus’ role as creator and protector of humanity. In flashbacks and in Prometheus’ conversations with the eagle and others, the book will touch on humanity’s deep evolutionary past and its complicated prospects for a future. Tongues is both adventure story and meditation on human nature.

Tongues will be serialized in large-format, full-color comics and self-published over the next few years by the artist himself, making it his most ambitious work to date. Issue one will be available for pre-order May 25th, 2017, and will ship August 1, 2017.

Upon the series’ completion collected editions will be published in the U.S. by Pantheon Books and in the U.K. by Jonathan Cape.

Anders Nilsen A Walk in Eden Coloring Release Book Party, Saturday, November 12 Will Be a Benefit to Flip U.S. Congress in 2018

Long before Election Day, creator Anders Nilsen had planned a book launch party for his new coloring book A Walk in Eden. In light of the recent election, he has decided to make the event a benefit – to flip congress in 2018. You can read more of Nilsen’s thoughts on the subject and if you’re in the Portland, Oregon area this Saturday, get out to the event!

Who: Cartoonist Anders Nilsen will host a coloring book party for his latest book “A Walk in Eden” published by Drawn and Quarterly. Nilsen is the artist and author of eight books including Big Questions, The End, and Poetry is Useless as well as the coloring book A Walk in Eden. His work has been featured in the New York Times, Poetry Magazine, Kramer’s Ergot, Pitchfork, Medium and elsewhere. His comics have been translated into several languages overseas and his painting and drawing have been exhibited internationally. Nilsen’s work has received three Ignatz awards as well as the Lynd Ward Prize for the Graphic Novel and Big Questions was listed as a New York Times Notable Book in 2011.

What: All-ages coloring book party to celebrate A Walk in Eden. The event will feature (in addition to the coloring book itself) original art from the book as well as an editioned handmade accordion book depicting a ten foot long continuous landscape from its pages. Nilsen will donate 25% of all sales on both of these to efforts at training and promoting the campaigns of progressive candidates for the US congress in 2018. Why: Following are a few thoughts about the election from Nilsen’s blog last Wednesday.

When theres a giant dumpster fire on your block what do you do?

1. Stare in abject horror and disbelief

2. Get some people together and try to put it outLike a lot of people, I’ve been staring in disbelief this morning. What happened last night in this country is unfathomably horrifying. I woke up at about 5am and couldn’t go back to sleep. The word ‘complacency’ has been rolling around in my head ever since. I’ve been following the election closely for months, so I was as blown away as everyone else when the results began to crystallize. But the truth is… I have done precious little to keep that dumpster from combusting. I watched people pour gasoline on it for over a year, and I thought someone else was taking care of it: The Republican establishment, Hillary Clinton, young hispanic voters in Florida, educated white women… whatever. I thought someone else had a hose at the ready. I don’t know what happens next. I’m scared for my country, I’m scared that people I know will lose their health care, I’m scared that American muslims and people of color and women will face even more harassment and abuse from an emboldened racist male national id, I’m scared for the people of Syria who have nowhere to turn, and I’m scared for the climate. The flames are spilling out of that dumpster. They’re getting higher.

But the list of things I can do about it is longer than zero. And if the government is going on hiatus for the next few years, someone else has to step in. Whatever chaos is coming, there are far more vulnerable people than me. And vulnerable people can be made ever-so-slightly less so. At a certain point this morning I closed the news tabs on my browser and went to the site for the UN High Commissioner for Refugees and set up a recurring donation. Then I went to Doctors Without Borders, Planned Parenthood, The National Association of Free Clinics and 350.org and did the same. It’s not enough, but if I’m not the only one it will add up to more than my measly little vote did. It could begin to make a small difference for a real person out in the world who’s facing something truly awful. I’ll also be doing what I can to flip Congress in 2018 and the White House in 2020. All those people I mentioned above couldn’t do it this time because too many of us were just standing there watching. After today we have to actually help. So go ahead and stare at the flaming garbage. It’s understandable. Its fucking unbelievable. Then go buy a gallon of gas for someone with a firetruck.

The show runs from 11am to 7pm on Saturday September 14th and 12pm to 6pm on Sunday September 15. Tickets to SPX cost $10 for one day, and $15 for the whole weekend.

Small Press Expo has announced Adrian Tomine and Anders Nilsen as surprise guests to SPX 2013, to be held September 14 and 15. Adrian and Anders will be in addition to previously announced guests Seth, Jeff Smith, Raina Telgemeier, Lisa Hanawalt, Gary Panter, Liza Donnelly, Gene Yang, Congressman John Lewis, Rutu Modan, Peter Bagge, Ed Piskor, Dash Shaw, Liniers, Domitille Collardey, Frank Santoro, Farel Dalrymple and Michael Kupperman.

Making his second appearance in as many years, Adrian Tomine will be on hand to sign his latest release Optic Nerve 13. In June, Adrian was a guest of Michelle Obama at the White House for a reception honoring a cross-section of American artists, writers and historians.

Anders Nilsen will be at SPX debuting his latest book, Rage of Poseidon from Drawn & Quarterly, as well as signing his latest from Fantagraphics, The End, an expanded hardcover edition of his work published as part of the Ignatz Series with Coconino Press. As with last year’s, Don’t Go Where I Can’t Follow, The End deals with the death of Nilsen’s fiance.

Small Press Expo Announces Programming Slate for SPX 2011

Bethesda, Maryland; August  11, 2010 – The Small Press Expo (SPX), the preeminent showcase for the exhibition of independent comics, graphic novels and alternative political cartoons, is pleased to announce its slate of programming for SPX 2011. SPX is proud to have earned a reputation for offering some of the most insightful, stimulating public interviews and panel discussions in comics today, assembled by comics educator and curator Bill Kartalopoulos.

Audiences at this year’s festival will have the opportunity to enjoy spotlight presentations and question-and-answer sessions with many of SPX’s headline guests, including Chester Brown, Roz Chast, Anders Nilsen, Diane Noomin, Johnny Ryan, Alex Robinson, Ann Telnaes, Craig Thompson, and Jim Woodring.

This year’s programming will also include a number of thoughtful panel discussions such as:

– “Inside The New Yorker,” featuring Roz Chast and Kate Beaton in conversation.
– “Narrative Logic: Surreal and Obscure,” with Marc Bell, Matthew Thurber, and Jim Woodring.
– “The Secret History of Women in Comics” with Jessica Abel, Diane Noomin and others, moderated by Heidi MacDonald.
– “Comics in the Library,” a round-table discussion with Sara Duke from the Library of Congress, Charles Brownstein, and representatives of two local library systems.
– “Navigating the Contemporary Publishing Landscape” with Mike Dawson, Meredith Gran and Julia Wertz.
– “Images of the Body” with Robyn Chapman, Jennifer Hayden, Gabby Schulz, and Jen Vaughn.

Additional programming events will include a slideshow presentation by Kim Thompson about the works of French comics giant Jacques Tardi and a hands-on cartooning workshop open to all attendees.

This year’s panels and spotlight sessions will be moderated by a bevy of critics, scholars, and other experts including Johanna Draper Carlson, Rob Clough, Craig Fischer, Martha H. Kennedy, Sean T. Collins, Joe McCulloch, and many more.

SPX Programming Coordinator Bill Kartalopoulos teaches classes about comics at Parsons The New School for Design. He also co-organizes the Brooklyn Comics Graphics Festival, reviews comics for Publishers Weekly, and has curated several comics-related exhibits including “Cartoon Polymaths” at the Sheila C. Johnson Design Center. He recently assisted Art Spiegelman on the production of MetaMaus, a book and DVD about the making of Maus.

SPX will be held Saturday, September 11 from 11AM – 7PM and Sunday, September 12, noon – 6PM at the Bethesda North Marriott Hotel and Convention Center in Bethesda, Maryland. Admission is $10 for a single day and $15 for both days.
