Review: Black Hammer #3

26734

Long before Spiral City’s greatest heroes were written out of their universe, the Martian champion Barbalien was already stranded far from home. Disguised as churchgoing Mark Markz in the timeless farming community where the heroes find themselves trapped, Barbalien faces a terrifying personal decision, even as he relives his painful past!

Black Hammer #3 manages to continue the strange mystery as past and present collide. Writer Jeff Lemire gives us a brief glimpse of the outside world near the end of the issue. The issue left me eager to see how they bring in the outside world. Is there more to them being unable to leave town then there appears? We’ll hopefully find out!

Artist Dean Ormston creates a spectacular cover that looks like some sort of old movie poster from the 50’s. Despite the short glimpse of Mars that is seen it looks fantastic. I’m curious to see if they will add in more of Barbalien’s people into the story and how that artistically will blend together with what we’ve seen. The flashback scenes of his arrival are the standout of the issue in my opinion. There’s a great collision of cultures as the hero arrives.

Review: Norman #4

norman_4_cover_bShenanigans and sibling rivalry abound in this second glimpse into Norman’s home life, as more is revealed as to how this gorgeous, golden, charming little boy became such a horrifying mini-monster in the making – albeit one who still has a lot to learn about the art of a skillful kill!

In Norman #4, Norman’s lost sister returns bringing reinforcements in the process. There’s a surprising twist that involves more in her physical appearance then who she brings along. It all comes together and manages to help build in anticipation and adds to the edge of the comics as things get plain weird.

Stan Silas, who is also the writer, continues with the cartoon-inspired art style like in previous issues. This issue also adds a vast amount of animals in the process. It’s all great as the comic shows Norman’s attempt at having a family Christmas.

The comic continues to be twisted and humorous with a great blend of writing and art.

Review: IF Anthology

4412b9_3d2ac3c338ef4350a471a3150668300c

“IF” – the word itself has helped make the impossible become possible. Celebrating a new theme with every Alterna Comics annual release, 2016’s IF boasts over 40 creators coming together to answer the question: “what would the world REALLY be like, if people had superpowers?” In “Homemade Heroes” children dress up as their favorite heroes unbeknownst to them that those very heroes are also their parents; in “The Maddening Sound” a superhero is driven insane from cries of help when he loses the ability to control his superhuman hearing. These tales and many more, deal with themes that run the gamut of the (super) human condition.

The IF Anthology takes a unique spin on the idea of superheroes. The stories vary from some with heroes attempting to live a normal life listening to people complain of their past deeds while others take old fables and make them their own. And there are other entries that are just plain strange, good but strange.

Given the sheer amount of people involved in this, it is no surprise the art style varies so much. That variant makes each artistic contribution as unique as the tales they support. Each artist manages to create a solid collaboration with their respective writers.

Review: Extraordinary X-Men #15

extraordinary_x_men__15-1The latest issue of Extraordinary X-Men has us moving between worlds as Storm and Magik try and get back the soul sword from a possessed Sabina while Nightcrawler and Co. try and save an Apocalypse possessed Colossus. The ladies manage to gain the trust and assistance of the Mystics who aid Storm and Magik in their trip to Limbo to save it. Colossus seems to be unmoved by his former friends in his current state which might spell trouble for the X-Men.

The artwork by Victor Ibanez is clean and detailed. Each panel aids in keeping the story fresh, interesting and a real page turner. This issue reads more like a TV show than a comic and the story seems to jump off of the page.

The writing by Jeff Lemire is solid. There is nothing cliched or wasted in any of the bubbles. This issue seems to push the story forward and keep the readers interested enough to wait anxiously for the next and final issue in this arc.

Overall I found this issue a real page turner. It was strong, cohesive and effective in pushing the story along. With the X-Men being such an old series it’s kind of refreshing to read new stories. It’s a nice addition to the universe without being contrived or appearing like a trick to keep readers interested. It’s a solid issue in an interesting arc.

A Storm is Brewing in God Country

Fan-favorite writer Donny Cates and Geoff Shaw team up for an all-new series God Country set to launch from Image Comics in January 2017.

The enchanted sword at the eye of the storm gives him more than a sound mind and body, however. He’s now the only man who can face these otherworldly creatures the sword has drawn down to the Lone Star State…

Southern Bastards meets American Gods in a high-stakes fantasy series that will kick off the new year with high-octane action and jaw-dropping worldbuilding. In God Country, salvation is a double-edged sword.
