Review: IF Anthology
“IF” – the word itself has helped make the impossible become possible. Celebrating a new theme with every Alterna Comics annual release, 2016’s IF boasts over 40 creators coming together to answer the question: “what would the world REALLY be like, if people had superpowers?” In “Homemade Heroes” children dress up as their favorite heroes unbeknownst to them that those very heroes are also their parents; in “The Maddening Sound” a superhero is driven insane from cries of help when he loses the ability to control his superhuman hearing. These tales and many more, deal with themes that run the gamut of the (super) human condition.
The IF Anthology takes a unique spin on the idea of superheroes. The stories vary from some with heroes attempting to live a normal life listening to people complain of their past deeds while others take old fables and make them their own. And there are other entries that are just plain strange, good but strange.
Given the sheer amount of people involved in this, it is no surprise the art style varies so much. That variant makes each artistic contribution as unique as the tales they support. Each artist manages to create a solid collaboration with their respective writers.
