Written by David Pepose, The Devil That Wears My Face #2 continues what he does best, mashing up two properties for something that’s new. In this case, the concept is simple, Face/Off meets The Exorcist. While those two films are so different, the end result is frankly awesome.

The issue balances its two characters well. Father Vieri is trapped and tortured as no one believes the truth he’s telling. It’s a disturbing sequence in some way as it’s just enough for the reader to want to yell out “stop” and free Vieri. Some of the torture isn’t fully explained with visuals teasing everything and that just lets the imagination and extent of the pain rune wild. Then there’s Legion who is making its mark… sort of literally. The bodies pile up with an ending that’ll really shake things up. The combo of the two stories creates an almost apocalyptic tale sort of story.

All of this is helped by the art of Alex Cormack who is joined by Justin Birch on lettering. The Devil That Wears My Face #2 does a solid job of shock and that’s a lot to do with the visuals. Things feel like they go from 0 to 60. And, while that doesn’t always work, it does here. Things are calm, somewhat, and then there’s visuals to catch readers off guard. Some of them are very over the top, sure to leave everyone unnerved by them. Cormack’s art also helps add a sense of urgency where time is ticking down and decisions have to be made. It’s a great combo of story and art to come together and really emphasize the horror aspects of it all but also not distract by going too over the top. It shocks but doesn’t derail.

The Devil That Wears My Face #2 is another fantastic issue. It keeps up the concept which might seem B-movie at first, but its delivery just works so well. If you’re a horror or action fan, it’s a series that shouldn’t be missed.
