The Devil That Wears My Face

(W) David Pepose (A/CA) Alex Cormack (L) Justin Birch

Equal parts Face/Off and The Exorcist, Ringo Award-winning writer David Pepose (Moon Knight: City of the Dead, Savage Avengers) and Bram Stoker Award-nominated artist Alex Cormack (Sea of Sorrows, The Crimson Cage) conjure a harrowing tale of terror, action, and body-swap intrigue that will leave comic readers at the edge of their seats.

The year is 1740, and the Vatican is in turmoil. Grappling with a profound crisis of faith, outcast exorcist Father Franco Vieri is dispatched on a mission of grave importance – to rescue a Spanish nobleman from the clutches of the sadistic demon known as Legion. But when the exorcism goes tragically wrong, Vieri finds himself trapped in a stranger’s body… and learns what horrors lie ahead when the Devil wears his face.

The Devil That Wears My Face #6 delivers an action packed horror finale!

The Devil That Wears My Face #6

The Curia is broken, as Legion’s corruption floods the streets of Rome. While the Vatican burns, Father Vieri must make his final stand against the demon that wears his face. Yet with his greatest weapon proven powerless against the Devil, can Vieri and Maria find another way to reclaim his body? Or will the horrifying secrets of Vieri’s past turn out to be his undoing? All that is certain is that Legion’s depravity has finally been unleashed… and it will take more than a priest to banish this terrifying demon back to Hell. The Devil That Wears My Face #6 wraps up the series with an action packed finale full of horror.

Written by David Pepose, The Devil That Wears My Face #6 ends what has been a fun series that mixes the campy film Face/Off with the classic horror film The Exorcist. Up to this point, the comic has fallen a bit more into the campy side of Face/Off but with this finale, it’s all horror as Legion unleashes death and destruction and piles up the bodies.

Pepose wraps things up nicely with some reveals and a battle which feels somewhat of what is expected but at the same time delivers exactly what you’d want as a reader.

Part of that is due to the art of Alex Cormack which delivers an almost glee in the horrors on the page. The bodies are piled up and rats plentiful as a small amount of Legion’s destruction is shown. Cormack also ups the corruption a bit as individuals have fallen more under Legion’s control and act on his behalf. It all comes together for a look that’s firmly in the horror genre and just enough to disturb. Justin Birch’s lettering is the icing in the cake, delivering Legion’s dialogue with an added touch.

The Devil That Wears My Face #6 is a solid finale to a series that has delivered with every issue. Pepose, Cormack, and Birch have all embraced the crazy concept and the end result is a wild ride that leaves us wanting more.

Left hovering at death’s door after a brutal confrontation, Father Vieri finds himself trapped in a hell of his own making. With the demonic Legion still in possession of his body, will an unexpectedly familiar face be Vieri’s salvation, or his ultimate demise? Meanwhile, Vieri’s attendant Maria stalks Legion through Rome, aiming to expose the Devil’s infiltration of the Church at any cost. But even if she can convince Cardinal Pentecost of the truth, Legion’s influence has grown exponentially…and when his final endgame stands revealed, not even the Vatican will be able to stop him.

The Devil That Wears My Face #5

Meanwhile, Vieri’s attendant Maria stalks Legion through Rome, aiming to expose the Devil’s infiltration of the Church at any cost. But even if she can convince Cardinal Pentecost of the truth, Legion’s influence has grown exponentially…and when his final endgame stands revealed, not even the Vatican will be able to stop him. The Devil That Wears My Face #5 is a solid issue building up to the next issue’s finale.

Written by David Pepose, The Devil That Wears My Face #5 just soaks in the over the top nature of its concept. It soaks in the cheese in all the right ways delivering an issue that you can feel the over the top delivery of every scene. Described as Face/Off meets The Exorcist, the comic has the delivery of Nicholas Cage in Face/Off, just glee in everything.

Legion has been leaving destruction behind him and suspicions have been raised by some over his behavior. But, much like in Face/Off, those concerns are too late as Legion’s tendrils have sunk further into the Vatican. It’s so much fun in how excessive it is and clearly how much fun the creative team is having with the comic. This is popcorn horror you sit back and enjoy the insanity of it all.

Part of that fun is Alex Cormack‘s art which has Legion looking like Cage at his most deranged at times. Cormack also dips into horror without crossing a line to distract. Floating eyes have been an image subtly used throughout the series that emphasizes Legion’s demonic nature. It doesn’t overpower even with dozens of them on a page or panel. Justin Birch‘s lettering enhances everything as well emphasizing Legion’s nature, adding a cherry on top of everything.

Just like the movies it mashes up, The Devil That Wears My Face #5 is a comic you just sit back and enjoy. It has a nature about it that’s hard to not find fun in. Add in Nic Cage’s voice and imagine his performance as you read Legion’s dialogue and it all creates an experience that you want to see come to the screen big or small. It’s concept might seem a bit silly but this team has pulled it off to make this a must read.

Wednesdays (and Tuesdays) are new comic book day! Each week hundreds of comics are released, and that can be pretty daunting to go over and choose what to buy. That’s where we come in

Each week our contributors choose what they can’t wait to read this week or just sounds interesting. In other words, this is what we’re looking forward to and think you should be taking a look at!

Find out what folks think below, and what comics you should be looking out for this week.

The Bat-Man: First Knight #1 (DC Comics/DC Black Label) – Dan Jurgens and Mike Perkins take us to Batman’s earliest days for a retelling of one of his most infamous cases through a modern lense.

Beyond Real #2 (Vault Comics) – The first issue was solid with a Matrix like concept that feels perfect for our AI world.

Dark Souls: The Willow King #2 (Titan Comics) – The first issue was some solid dark fantasy with beautiful art and a great introduction to the characters. We’re excited to explore more of the world.

The Devil That Wears My Face #5 (Mad Cave Studios) – The series has been fun with its over the top moments and embracing its concept of Face/Off meets The Exorcist.

The Fog #1 (Sumerian) – The classic John Carpenter film returns in a new comic. Check out our interview with writer Steve Ekstrom!

The Gulf (Tundra Books) – The cover for this caught our eye and the story of four kids tring to find their place in the world sounds interesting to us.

Ms. Marvel: Mutant Menace #1 (Marvel) – It’s the next chapter of Ms. Marvel as she learns what it means to be a mutant and X-Man!

Night People #1 (Oni Press) – A pulsating roadmap of the American subconscious, where neon-lit Southern nights give way to lipstick, sweat, and blood, and the odd, the innocent, and the evil are all fellow travelers down an interstate of dark, elusive dreams. Yeah, we’re sold with that description.

Spectacular Spider-Men #1 (Marvel) – Peter Parker and Miles Morales team up in a new series!

Torpedo 1972 #1 (Ablaze Publishing) – In the 1930s, Lucas Torelli, known as “Torpedo”, was a legend of the suburbs of New York. A tough, trigger-happy Sicilian who only knew how to make friends-anyone else is no longer here to say otherwise. Nearly forty years later, the Big Apple has changed quite a bit. Torpedo, not so much. As a persistent journalist prepares to write an article about the Caputo family, the demons of Torpedo’s past resurface, along with his dirty old habits… We’re suckers from crime stories.

Ultimate X-Men #1 (Marvel) – The Ultimate line has been excellent so far. We’re excited to see not just how this series differs than the X-Men we know but what it brings to the new Ultimate U.

Void Rivals #7 (Skybound) – Beyond guest appearances, we really want to know how this series ties into the greater Energon Universe.

Weapon X-Men #1 (Marvel) – This universal spanning series of one-shots debuted with a so-so start but we’re intrigued by the overall concept.

What If.. Aliens #1 (Marvel) – What if Carter Burke had lived? Dude was a corporate weasel. He got what he deserved.

The Devil That Wears My Face #4 continues the theological action with a hell of a lot of fun

The Devil That Wears My Face #4

Framed for murder by the demonic Legion, Father Vieri must survive a deadly chase through the streets of Rome in order to escape the Inquisition. But as he possesses Vieri’s body, Legion unveils terrifying new ways to spread his corruption across the Vatican. Can Vieri find a way to turn the tables on the unholy adversary that wears his face? Or will this haunted exorcist find his last hopes extinguished by the Devil himself? The Devil That Wears My Face #4 is full of horror tinged action that continues to make us want to read more immediately.

I keep repeating it but the idea of The Exorcist meets Face/Off seems silly at first. But, as a child of those times, it’s also a hell of an idea and the basic concept of The Devil That Wears My Face. Written by David Pepose, the series has embraced that cheese while elevating it too delivering so many “holy shit” moments throughout. The Devil That Wears My Face #4 continues that record upping the action sequences and body count even further.

The issue mainly involves Father Vieri’s escape from Legion as Legion drops his facade. It opens up the opportunity for hoards to descend in a daring and fun action sequence through the town that takes on visuals that’ll evoke great chase scenes while also reminding you of a zombie invasion.

Pepose also embraces the over the top nature of Legion. The visuals from Alex Cormack along with Pepose’s writing feels like it has fun with it all. There’s moments that feel like they’re being performed by Nicolas Cage in his exaggerated manner. Cormack’s art also delivers what feels like a building wave effect throughout the issue as the chase grows bigger and bigger until the water breaks for what comes next. The visuals really enhance the flow of the story.

The Devil That Wears My Face #4 is a hell of a fun series that takes its concept and really elevates it to another level. You can almost visualize this on the big screen with its over the top moments and actions of its characters. It’s a hell of a surprise and fun series to have ended one year and start a new one with, and one that shouldn’t be missed.
