Graphic Policy’s Top Comic Picks this Week!

Wolverine #42

Wednesdays (and Tuesdays) are new comic book day! Each week hundreds of comics are released, and that can be pretty daunting to go over and choose what to buy. That’s where we come in

Each week our contributors choose what they can’t wait to read this week or just sounds interesting. In other words, this is what we’re looking forward to and think you should be taking a look at!

Find out what folks think below, and what comics you should be looking out for this week.

Alan Scott: The Green Lantern #4 (DC Comics) – The series continues to be a great blend of fact and fiction all mixed into some solid entertainment.

Charred Remains #2 (Mad Cave Studios) – The first issue was interesting having to do with a mysterious being and fires.

Conan the Barbarian #7 (Titan Comics) – The series has been fantastic so far evoking classic Conan with some beautiful art.

Dark Ride #10 (Skybound) – Absolutely great, and entertaining, horror, with some solid art. We get excited for each new issue.

Dead X-Men #1 (Marvel) – We’re intrigued about this one that has to do with some “dead” X-Men. With Krakoa in shambles, we’re pondering how it all comes together.

The Devil That Wears My Face #4 (Mad Cave Studios) – The concept of the Exorcist meets Face/Off might seem silly but this comic rocks. Fantastic action and horror mixed together.

Duke #2 (Skybound) – The first issue gave a shot in the arm to G.I. Joe and added more energy to the Energon Universe.

Jill and the Killers #1 (Oni Press) – Oni is launching a bunch of new series in 2024 and this one sounds like a cool mix of murder mystery and games.

Lilo & Stitch #1 (Dynamite Entertainment) – The beloved animated film comes to comics! Dynamite has been knocking it out of the park with their Disney releases.

Local Man #9 (Image Comics) – The series has been fantastic delivering a vibe that’s a mix of modern and classic Image superhero comics.

Moon Man #1 (Image Comics) – Kyle Higgins, Marco Locati, and Kid Cudi team up for this series about “missing minutes” during a moon mission.

Somna #2 (DSTLRY) – Becky Cloonan and Tula Lotay’s first issue featured some amazing art and we’re expecting more of that in a series set amidst the terrifying backdrop of the witch hunts in a quiet 1600s English village.

Wolverine #42 (Marvel) – The first issue was brutal and we expect nothing less from this.

Now trapped in Santiago’s body, Father Vieri finds himself locked in the dungeon of the Castillo Lazarus – and at the sadistic mercies of the Inquisition. Yet as this exorcist now burns at the touch of the Cross, can Vieri escape before the demon Legion uses his body to paint the Vatican red? And when suspicion mounts over his new host’s changed demeanor, to what terrifying lengths will Legion go to avoid being discovered? As the Devil lurks in the Church’s most precious sanctum, no one will be prepared for what happens next – and in one bloody instant, the fate of Rome will be changed forever.

Equal parts Face/Off and The Exorcist, Ringo Award-winning writer David Pepose (Moon Knight: City of the Dead, Savage Avengers) and Bram Stoker Award-nominated artist Alex Cormack (Sea of Sorrows, The Crimson Cage) conjure a harrowing tale of terror, action, and body-swap intrigue that will leave comic readers at the edge of their seats.

The Devil That Wears My Face #2 is a hell of a lot of fun

The Devil That Wears My Face #2

The Devil That Wears My Face #2 delivers a second issue that’s unnerving and action packed.

Written by David Pepose, The Devil That Wears My Face #2 continues what he does best, mashing up two properties for something that’s new. In this case, the concept is simple, Face/Off meets The Exorcist. While those two films are so different, the end result is frankly awesome.

The issue balances its two characters well. Father Vieri is trapped and tortured as no one believes the truth he’s telling. It’s a disturbing sequence in some way as it’s just enough for the reader to want to yell out “stop” and free Vieri. Some of the torture isn’t fully explained with visuals teasing everything and that just lets the imagination and extent of the pain rune wild. Then there’s Legion who is making its mark… sort of literally. The bodies pile up with an ending that’ll really shake things up. The combo of the two stories creates an almost apocalyptic tale sort of story.

All of this is helped by the art of Alex Cormack who is joined by Justin Birch on lettering. The Devil That Wears My Face #2 does a solid job of shock and that’s a lot to do with the visuals. Things feel like they go from 0 to 60. And, while that doesn’t always work, it does here. Things are calm, somewhat, and then there’s visuals to catch readers off guard. Some of them are very over the top, sure to leave everyone unnerved by them. Cormack’s art also helps add a sense of urgency where time is ticking down and decisions have to be made. It’s a great combo of story and art to come together and really emphasize the horror aspects of it all but also not distract by going too over the top. It shocks but doesn’t derail.

The Devil That Wears My Face #2 is another fantastic issue. It keeps up the concept which might seem B-movie at first, but its delivery just works so well. If you’re a horror or action fan, it’s a series that shouldn’t be missed.

The Fifth Beatle: The Brian Epstein Story Anniversary Edition

Wednesdays (and Tuesdays) are new comic book day! Each week hundreds of comics are released, and that can be pretty daunting to go over and choose what to buy. That’s where we come in

Each week our contributors choose what they can’t wait to read this week or just sounds interesting. In other words, this is what we’re looking forward to and think you should be taking a look at!

Find out what folks think below, and what comics you should be looking out for this week.

Associate Professor Akira Takasuki’s Conjecture Vol. 2 (Yen Press) – A university student who can detect lies teaming with an associate professor to investigate odd happenings was a solid debut and we’re expecting the same here.

Batman: Off-World #1 (DC Comics) – It’s Batman… in space! While the concept is… something, the comic is intriguing and showing Batman’s obsession with dealing with any contingency and going up against any opponent.

Beginning After the End Vol. 4 (Yen Press) – Arthur is finally able to travel to the city of Xyrus to reunite with his family!

Daredevil: Black Armor #1 (Marvel) – Marvel’s returning to “classic” times of characters to fill in unknown periods has been mixed but this debut is rather interesting so far pitting Daredevil up against some heavy hitters.

The Devil That Wears My Face #2 (Mad Cave Studios) – The first issue was solid mixing Face Off and The Exorcist and the second is what we’d expect as the fallout from the concept begins!

Edenfrost #1 (Mad Cave Studios) – After losing their parents in a pogrom, teenage siblings Alex and Yuli use the mystical power of a Golem to survive the chaos of the Russian Civil War. In a harrowing journey through war-torn Ukraine, the duo will face the harsh reality of warfare, ethnic bias, and national pride as they fight for their own place in the world. Can you say relevant?

The Fifth Beatle: The Brian Epstein Story Anniversary Edition (Dark Horse) – If you missed out on this when it was released 10 years ago, here’s your chance to correct that mistake with a new edition with new additions! It’s the true story of the visionary manager of the Beatles, Brian Epstein!

Hellicious #1 (Massive Publishing) – There’s only one soul who Cherry thinks might be a good playmate – Satan-worshipping death metal frontman Briggy Bundy. The bad news is, he isn’t dead…Yet. If you missed the original release of this series, now’s your chance!

Justice League vs. Godzilla vs. Kong #2 (DC Comics) – The crossover might seem a little silly, the result is a lot of fun as DC’s heroes must deal with an invasion of oversized monsters. Don’t think to much and just sit back and enjoy the action.

Kiss the Scars of the Girls Vol. 1 (Yen Press) – Deep within a dense forest stands an academy for girls, whose students share a secret-they’re all vampires. To learn to hunt without attracting human attention, the maidens forge bloody bonds of sisterhood, but what fate will their ties bring…?

Red Harvest: Terror and Famin in Soviet Ukraine (NBM) – Red Harvest is based on the tragic events that took place in Soviet Ukraine and other parts of the Soviet Union from 1929 to 1933.

Somna #1 (DSTLRY) – Set amidst the terrifying backdrop of the witch hunts in a quiet 1600s English village, Somna follows one woman’s descent into an erotic escape from the confines of her puritanical world.

Universal Monsters: Dracula #2 (Skybound) – A retelling of the classic tale of Dracula with some fantastic art. The first issue was amazing and we expect no less from the second.

Void Rivals #6 (Skybound) – The series seems to have found its legs with the previous issue moving away from the guest of the week and bringing all of the teases together. Hopefully that direction continues.

Yokohama Station SF Vol. 3 (Yen Press) – The series has been interesting so far as the setting is a Japanese train station that’s sort of sentient and expanding!

Ginseng Roots #12

Each week our contributors choose what they can’t wait to read this week or just sounds interesting. In other words, this is what we’re looking forward to and think you should be taking a look at!

Find out what folks think below, and what comics you should be looking out for this week.

Abbott: 1979 #1 (BOOM! Studios) – On the eve of the 1980s and the Reagan Administration, Detroit is burdened with an oppressive darkness-both political and supernatural. It’s the start of the final chapter of the trilogy!

Birds of Prey #2 (DC Comics) – The first issue was what we expected hitting a lot of moments we’ve seen before but the interaction, personalities, and art, has us excited for more. The debut was a lot of fun and we’re expecting more for the second.

Clementine Book 2 (Skybound) – Clementine’s adventure continues in the second volume of this graphic novel series for younger readers based on the popular video game set in the world of The Walking Dead.

Count Dante #3 (Scout Comics) – The comic is the sort of true story about the martial arts legend. How much is fact and how much is fiction? That’s for you the reader to decide.

The Devil That Wears My Face #1 (Mad Cave Studios) – It’s Face Off meets The Exorcist and it’s so good. Watch our initial review.

Ginseng Roots #12 (Uncivilized Comics) – It’s the finale to Craig Thompson’s series that has him celebrating his parents’ 50th wedding anniversary. It’s been an interesting series about a world so few of us know.

G.O.D.S. #1 (Marvel) – It’s a “bold” expansion of Marvel’s Gods and the first issue is… interesting. We’re expecting big things from this, so this is the chance to get in on the ground floor.

The Midnite Show #1 (Dark Horse Comics) – Cullen Bunn and Brian Hurtt… that alone has us excited about this horror series about monsters of the silver screen coming to live and wreaking havoc on a small town.

The Night Eaters Vol. 2 Her Little Reapers (Abrams ComicArts) – The first volume caught us off guard with its horror roots. It delivered so many twists and turns, we’re excited to see what the second volume brings.

The Plot Holes #2 (Massive Publishing) – Sean Gordon Murphy’s new indie series’ debut was full of interesting ideas about characters in books who have to save other books. It was more than enough to get us intrigued to see what comes next.

Ranger Academy #1 (BOOM! Studios) – If you had a chance to join the Power Rangers, would you do it? We’re intrigued about this new series that expands the Power Rnagers Universe.

Transformers #1 (Skybound) – We’re Transformers fans and this comic already has sold out at the distributor level, so it’s hot, hot, hot! We’ve read it already and our review will be out Wednesday and we definitely have thoughts.
