Welcome to Graphic Policy’s DC Rebirth: Recap And Review where we take a look at the comics released under DC‘s Rebirth banner and try to work out just how accessible they are for new readers – we’ll also be providing  recap of sorts for the relevant story beats up until the issue in question in order to help you figure out if the series is something you’re interested in.

Each comic will receive a rating of Friendly or Unfriendly based on how easy it was for new readers to pick them up; the ratings are based solely on the issues released in the post-Rebirth ongoing series. More consideration regarding the comic’s accessibility will be given for the specific issue being read rather than the series overall, but if reading a back issue will help, then that will be mentioned. You’ll also notice that each comic will get a rating that falls on Graphic Policy’s typical ten point scale, which is there to help you pick between issues if you only want to check out one or two.

Not every comic is covered week to week, and that’s because I  sometimes forget to read them  (although that doesn’t happen often), or I really can’t bring myself to pic up the issue. If I have missed an issue, typically I won’t go looking for back issues to catch up on events – this feature is all about accessibility for new readers, after all.

Action Comics #988 Last issue it was revealed that the mysterious figure behind a lot of the Rebirth events, including the disappearance of Timothy Drake, Mr. Oz was actually, spoiler alert, Jor-El. Be prepared for an origin story which is Friendly enough. 7/10

Batgirl #15 I don’t honestly think I remember what happened last issue, but judging by the cover it probably had something to do with Nightwing – it is Friendly enough to be readable, which is always nice. 6/10

Batman Beyond #12 An interlude issue while Bruce Wayne and Batman (Beyond) are returning confronting R’as Al Ghul (Damian Wayne), we can see what happened in their absence. If you’re curious about the Beyond timeline, this is a Friendly standalone story. 6.75/10

Detective Comics #965 Tim Drake “died” quite awhile ago (although we always knew that he wasn’t quite dead), but now we get a bit of a catch up with Red Robin as he’s interrogated by Mr. Oz. As far as things go, this is Friendly enough for you to enjoy. 7.75/10

Hal Jordan And The Green Lantern Corps #29 Somebody is hunting the New Gods, and Hal Jordan’s currently trying to outrun some Omega Beams in order to protect Highfather. The rest you’ll pick up along the way. 8/10

Justice League Of America #15 The JLA have gone to the microverse in order to find Ray Palmer and have been roped into saving reality. As you do. We get a lot more info regarding why Palmer left, which has the added benefit of making this Friendly. 7.5/10

Suicide Squad #26 This issue is a Dark Nights: Metal tie in. If you don’t care about the multipart crossover and mini then skip this. If you do care, then you’ll be reading this anyway… 7/10

The Flash #31 There’s a new villain that can control blood. It’s kinda gross, but Friendly. I’d say it’s worth reading… but it’s not that good. 5/10

Wonder Woman #31 Assuming you’ve seen the Wonder Woman movie then you’ll find this comic Friendly. It’s a solid start to a new story, and one that’s pretty easy to jump into. 7/10
