Review: Wynonna Earp #8

wynonnaearp_08_cov_reg*Warning Spoilers Below*

In issue #8 of Beau Smith‘s Wynonna Earp we get a look into the Black Badge witness protection service. We meet Ibob a mixed breed werewolf who skimmed some cash from a purebred werewolves criminal enterprise. The first page is filled with panels of well-written backstory. Not so much that you get too much information and feel overwhelmed, but enough that you feel invested in the story from the beginning.

After a brief showdown with a wolf pack at a diner, Ibob is rescued by Smitty and we get into the chase portion of the story. Dolls, Wynonna, Smitty and Ibob hit the road to keep Ibob’s family safe and relocate them somewhere new. Despite the trio of Bad Asses on this mission, things are going to a little more complicated than expected because, the White Wolf clan that’s after Ibob own the dark web and they’re nothing to mess with.

After narrowly escaping members of the White Wolf pack during the car chase, they arrive at Ibob’s WITSEC home we meet his family. They are safe and sound thanks to Deputy Haught, Val, and Doc. After revealing that keeping Ibob safe was a Smitty decision and not necessarily a Black Badge one we learn that Ibob stole the money, as dangerous as it was, so he could strip the werewolf gene from his wife and kids using dark magic. The warm and fuzzies that this moment evokes is short lived because there are literal wolves at the gate.

Of course a fight breaks out and our team is outmanned/wolfed, regular bullets don’t really cut it against a clan of White Wolves. Just when things seem helpless Ibob near fatally wounds Michael, the White Wolf leader , and Wynonna finishes him off with her peacemaker.

With Haught only slightly wounded in the fight and the Ibob’s wife and kids safe and sound there is peace so, the episode gets to end on a happy note. Smitty has things worked out and the reformed wolf is going to be working in the Black Badge IT department helping shut down the Dark Web.

The comic book is obviously hella different from the TV show, even with the art changes to make Wynonna look more like her SyFy counterpart but, it’s still as awesome a comic book as it was before. There are some slight changes that occur in the chronology for the comic timeline vs the TV one. I find these changes refreshing and it feels like a true reboot of the story and I love seeing where this new timeline will go. Issue #8 doesn’t disappoint, it’s a great touching story within a tight package that reads well as a complete package or single issue.

Chris Evenhuis’ artwork is nice, it’s a lot crisper and more realistic than the original version of Wynonna Earp. The panels read like a storyboard for a really cool B-movie action flick. There’s so much attention to detail and it complements the story perfectly.

Overall, I really enjoyed this issue. There was no cliffhanger or catching up to do in the beginning. Everything was contained in this one issue making it a fun read.

Graphic Policy’s Top Comic Picks this Week!

black-1-1Wednesdays are new comic book day! Each week hundreds of comics are released, and that can be pretty daunting to go over and choose what to buy. That’s where we come in!

We’re bringing back something we haven’t done for a while, what the team thinks. Our contributors are choosing up to five books each week and why they’re choosing the books.

Find out what folks think below, and what comics you should be looking out for this Wednesday.

Shay

Top Pick: Fight Club 2 Library Edition (Dark Horse) – This was an amazing miniseries that stood up to the awesomeness of the book and the film. David Mack’s killer covers and Cameron Stewart’s art makes this hardcover edition worth having as a keepsake and an amazing read worth going back to time and time again. It’s a great sequel to an already iconic story and having it in hardcover form makes it a nice coffee table book so you can turn all your friends on to the magic.

Harley Quinn #5 (DC Comics) -The baddest chick is back in a new issue. This is the start of a new story arc ” Eat To This Beat”. We get to follow Harley on an undercover mission through NYC punk scene and that’s sure to be a fun ride and a super interesting arc. Excited is an understatement.

Shade, The Changing Girl #1 (DC Comics) – Intergalactic body jumper, a female lead, high school drama and more await in this new take on a unique series from DC. I’m hella interested in where this story goes because, the idea of someone trying to escape madness and getting trapped in the body of bully that everyone hates is a fun twist. I’m excited to see all the twists and turns that can happen when nothing is what it seems.

Wynonna Earp #8 (IDW Publishing) – The struggle is real for a werewolf trying to protect his family from the criminal pack of werewolves he ripped off. Lucky for Ibob that Black Badges baddest team has his back, with Val, Wynonna,  Haught, Dolls , Smitty and, Doc on his protection detail. But, Ibob might have to step up and help in the fight because when things go wrong family and friends have to look out for each other and take no prisoners.

Jessica Jones #1 (Marvel) – Welcome to the present! A decade later Jessica Jones is back and ready slay with her PI gig. Things might be a little different but, Jess is still the same and that’s a good thing because I’m sure this series will keep us on our toes and get us ready for the next season on Jessica Jones on Netflix.  2018 seems like forever but, this should be the fix we all need.

Alex

Top Pick: A&A: The Adventures of Archer & Armstrong #8 (Valiant) – Always a pleasure to read, this series has become one of my favourite. The current story featuring a travelling circus of Armstrong clones has been an absolute blast, with just enough stabs at a typically standard superhero comic to make it to the top of the list.

Black #1 (Black Mask Studios) – It’s hard to understate how much of an impact this comic could have with it’s tale of a young black man shot by police, before he wakes up with superpowers. In a world where only black people have superpowers. This comic should have some significant buzz about it, but is it worth the hype? We’ll find out Wednesday.

Bloodshot Reborn #18 (Valiant) – I’m as surprised as you are that this is here the week after issue #17 came out, but it makes sense. The story wasn’t quite over for the Bloodshot gang, and a second issue of this comic in as many weeks isn’t a bad thing. Especially when the Bloodshots are stranded on a dingy in the middle of the ocean.

Green Lanterns #8 (DC Comics) – DC’s finest title right now. This series has gotten me excited about Green Lantern comics for the first time in a decade. The chemistry between Simon and Jessica echoes all the very best buddy cop movies, and their platonic relationship has developed very naturally over the course of the first seven issues. One of the very few comic books that I’m happy about the bi-weekly shipping schedule, but as ever with such a shipping schedule, I really hope that the quality keeps up with it.

Intertwined #1 (Dynamite Entertainment) – A kung-fu noir tale set in the 70’s? Sign me up.

Revolution #2 (IDW Publishing) – This is a comic that’s the fantasy of any kid who played with their Transformers and G.I. Joes at the same time. The kicker? The first issue was awesome, even if you haven’t been following the comic of the properties involved.

Brett

Top Pick: Black #1 (Black Mask Studios) – I’ve read it. I’ve reviewed it. It lives up to my high expectations and really delivers an entertaining comic that is also relevant.

Death of X #1 (Marvel) – Filling in the gap of what happened post Secret Wars and when we came into the new Marvel Universe, Death of X will let us know what set the Inhumans and X-Men on a collision course.

Jessica Jones #1 (Marvel) – Jones returns to her own series and it’s far overdue. At this point the question is if the series will live up to expectations?

Midnighter and Apollo #1 (DC Comics) – A follow up to Steve Orlando’s excellent Midnighter, the mini-series reunites this superpowered power couple.

Romulus #1 (Image Comics) – Written by Bryan Hill with art by Nelson Blake II, this series has been on my radar ever since Hill mentioned it on our podcast. Now, I finally get to see what the buzz is about and Anthony has more details below.

Anthony

Black #1 (Black Mask Studios) – It has been repeatedly said but Black Mask Studios releases titles that are always intriguing, fresh and deserving of a wider scope of people’s comic radar. Black suggest a what if story that puts a focus on a topic that is unfortunately not new but being more publicized as an influx of stories of police brutality against black individuals rises. What if only black people had superpowers? There needs to be more diverse titles like Black with a creative team like writer Kwanza Osajyefo, co-creator and designer Tim Smith III, artist Jamal Igle and cover artist Khary Randolph.

Moonshine #1 (Image Comics) – A crime story set in the prohibition era that includes a werewolf? With the creative team of Brian Azzarello and Eduardo Risso (100 Bullets) back together, this is an absolute must buy.

Paper Girls #10 (Image Comics) – The second arc comes to a close. Paper Girls is one of those titles that are a continuous treat to read, fleshing out the characters and weirdness of time travel all with a helping of humour each and every month.

Romulus #1 (Image Comics) – From writer Bryan Hill (Postal) and artist Nelson Blake II, Romulus sounds like one of those titles that has potential to be a big hit. A woman named Ashlar is on a mission to fight against a secret organization that trained and betrayed her. With an awesome sounding lead, secret organizations, and a manipulated past in need of a present day reality check, Romulus has a lot of promise.

A&A: The Adventures of Archer and Armstrong #8 (Valiant) – Archer and Armstrong look to continue to fight against a clone of Armstrongs from a local circus. A&A never fails to be entertaining and hilarious and since this is the last part of this circus of nightmares, it will be very interesting to see what exactly will be found out about Armstrong’s wife, setting up the next arc.

Review: Wynonna Earp #7

WE_07_CVRI’ve been a Wynonna Earp fan since before it became a TV show (if you haven’t seen it yet, it’s time to get your binge watch on because it has been renewed for a second season.) This was a time before Wynonna got the make-under and went from a blond sex bomb to the more realistic brunette bad ass she is today. The recent reboot style update that IDW Publishing put out to match the TV show and bring newer fans into the Wynonna Earp fold has kept all of the good stuff and added a little bit more awesome.

Wynonna Earp Issue #7 is the match that is going to start a huge forest fire and after reading it, I’m ready to go get some marshmallows and join in on the bonfire. Beau Smith gives us a nice heaping spoonful of the new standard of Wynonna Earp and I can’t wait for another taste. Let’s start with the story, Wynonna has been on her usual kill every supernatural baddie that moves kick and she’s kind of burnt out. She convinces Dolls to let he have a vacation and Val comes along to keep Wynonna from killing everything. Wynonna is a magnet for trouble and that’s what we love about her. She’s witty, smart, resourceful and can take care of herself. This issue keeps her true to her amazing form.

Val and Wynonna set out on a road trip for a week with no real plans , just a need for the open road. Since this is a Wynonna Earp adventure trouble is brewing in the distance,so of the Black Badge detainees are planning a break. There’s a rescue mission at a roadside stand, a biker fight and a lure into something else. The artwork is basic but , it pops and tells the story.

The artwork is basic but , it pops and tells the story. The show stills are a nice bonus but, seem kind of unnecessary considering if you’re already seven issues in, it’s because you’re already hooked. Issue #7 is just as consistent as every other issue. The writing is clever and is just as much a page-turner as the action is. It’s like a mini episode in your pocket that you read. It was flawless to the last panel which left me filled with ideas and hope for whatever is coming next.

TV Review: Wynonna Earp S1E13 I Walk the Line

wynonnaearp1-075f2In the Season 1 finale, the costs are high when Wynonna finds herself in a showdown with a most terrifying nemesis. Meanwhile, something shocking about Waverly’s past comes to light and an impossible choice is faced by Dolls.

Wynonna Earp wraps up the first season with a final episode that is just all over the place and generally falls flat. The episode continues from the previous with Wynonna surrounded with only Doc and Dolls to help. They get her out of there, but it’s never explained how the other two get out of there.

There’s twists and turns in what is supposed to keep viewers on their toes, but instead just feels needlessly complicated. We learn there’s more at play for example, but that’s not explained well and just feels like the season has built for this last minute switch out.

Things get wrapped up pretty well in some ways, and others that show the folks in charge of this show just don’t know when to stop. The end of the episode is a perfect example where a character has a turn and then it goes on for a bit, instead of going the horror movie route and ending it right there. It’s a step too far that kills what could be a cool moment.

The acting takes quite a few steps back. There’s some ok acting, but generally things slide backwards for the main actors and the infected don’t help matters. It’s d level as far as acting ability, and that might be a nice assessment.

The season finale wraps up a lot, and maybe we’ll see a second season. But, if that’s the plan, this series needs some serious work to reach anything remotely close to being quality television.

TV Review: Wynonna Earp S1E12 House of Memories

wynonnaearp1-075f2An admirer with a gruesome vendetta puts someone familiar in a tight spot. Meanwhile, Wynonna needs to outsmart Bobo Del Rey; and at the same time, protect Dolls from a new threat.

Wynonna Earp keeps the slight improvement up as the first season begins to wind down and Bobo’s plan becomes much clearer. Why were the Earps attacked that fateful night? Why did Bobo protect Willa? All of that is revealed in this episode as the pieces of the puzzles come together.

The episode just builds and builds and things get much better as they get rolling about 2/3 of the way through. That’s the point all of that is put out there and things get rather interesting.

Through all of the reveals the episode also focuses on individuals. Willa’s personality comes out more. Wynonna deals with her possibly not being the heir. Waverly’s relationship too is revealed to some folks. That all is probably some of the best of the episode. Actually, the episode again shows how Nicole Haught is the best character on the show as she deals with some homophobia and an asshole pretty hardcore.

Things aren’t completely wrapped up. There’s a lot left open, some to a slightly incoherent level that’ll leave you scratching your head. We’ll see what gets wrapped up as the season ends next episode.

Things are still better, but they’re not great, but at least it’s better….

TV Review: Wynonna Earp S1E11 Landslide

wynonnaearp1-075f2Wynonna barely has time to digest the discovery she and her sister made in the Barrens when duty calls in the form of a gambler who was found torn apart in his hotel room. Meanwhile, Henry meets a mysterious stranger.

Wynonna Earp shows some improvement with this episode that begins to shake things up in an interesting way.

It was pretty obvious at the end of the last episode that the woman rescued from the cult was the thought dead third Earp sister. But how did she fire the gun? Why can Wynonna do so? This episode begins to answer some of those questions as it’s peppered with flashbacks as we learn more about Eve and the night she was taken and the Earp girls’ father was killed.

All of this leads to friction and a fight that gets captured on film and things begin to unroll from there.

There’s some good in Eve is very uneasy about the situation, but by the end of the episode she’s completely ok with the situation and where things are, no matter how odd it all is. It’s a rather quick switch that probably should have played out over a few more episodes.

Wynonna and Eve as a team though are entertaining and I finally feel like Wynonna could actually kick ass, though scenes are over the top.

The thing that really stands out is the mysterious Juan Carlos who deals with Henry and talks in riddles. This is something I can’t figure out, nor can I guess where Bobo is connected with Eve. There’s some good build up and mystery here as the episode is a vast improvement in every way from what’s come before.

Hopefully the series has figured out its stride and voice, and if it’s like this episode the series will be far more enjoyable.
